Huddersfield Town v Reading FC
Championship Play-Off Final
Wembley Stadium
Monday, 29th May 2017 3pm

LIVE on Sky Sports

This Bank Holiday Monday sees the Championship Play-Off Final as Huddersfield Town take on Reading.

Who will join Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League?

Latest Odds

Huddersfield Town 13/10
Reading 12/5
Draw 9/4

Team News

Town could name the same XI that started the second leg of their semi-final win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Chelsea loanee Kasey Palmer (hamstring) may be a surprise squad inclusion after missing the past three months.

Reading will hope Jordan Obita (ankle) is available after missing the semi-final second leg against Fulham.

Garath McCleary (hamstring) will push for a start after being on the bench in that 1-0 win.

How did the league season finish for both clubs?

Huddersfield finished fifth and Reading finished third in the regular season and were separated by four points.

When was the last time either club were in the top flight?

Huddersfield are bidding to return to English football's top flight for the first time since 1972, while if Jaap Stam's side are victorious at Wembley, it would see them return to the Premier League after a four-season absence.

What do the managers say?

David Wagner: "I think everybody expected Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday in the final. There were a lot of statements before the semi-finals about momentum and about form. It is another example where we have proven that experience and what has happened in the past is irrelevant. After the 120 minutes against Sheffield Wednesday there were a lot of tired legs, but now after a training camp in Portugal and training on the grass here, everybody is ready to go."

Jaap Stam: "You've always got ideals as a manager that you want to go for the best results or finish as high as you can, but to end up in the top 10 would have been a good season for us. It's a very big and important game, but the players know what they need to do. Everyone's quite calm within the team and there's experienced players there. Times like this are probably easiest for a manager, as you don't need to say a lot as a manager as everybody knows what they need to do to win that game and everybody knows what's at stake."

What each club's media think

Paul Ogden, Huddersfield Town commentator for BBC Radio Leeds:

I would use the two regular season meetings between the teams as a fairly solid indicator for how Monday's game will go.

With both teams having won one apiece - and both by a margin of 1-0 - it would not surprise me remotely if this game were to go beyond the 90 minutes.

Neither team gives much away and neither defence is particularly vulnerable, so I could envisage a game that may not be the most exciting to the neutral.

Should we need extra time, there is no concern that Town's high-energy approach could leave them at a disadvantage on what could be a hot May day at Wembley.

Wagner is a meticulous planner and, straight after beating Sheffield Wednesday, the players went to Portugal for a warm weather training camp.

Tim Dellor, Reading commentator for BBC Radio Berkshire:

Anyone who says they knows who will win this game is guessing - it's far too tight to call. With only four points separating the two teams over the 46 games, the stats back that up.

The two teams have reached the most valuable game in football in a similar manner. Statistically, tactically, and managerially there is little difference, leaving us with the mental toughness of the players.

The team that best copes with the stress of the big occasion, the huge crowd and the enormous consequences of success or failure will inevitably be the ones playing in the Premier League next season.

my 20 year old son who predicted we would get to the CC final after we beat Huddersfield in first [maybe second ]round, also tipped Huddersfield to go up at the start of this season. How I wish I was a betting man and listened to him on both occasions...

Fantastic from the Huddersfield fans (always good sports when we go there) and I want them to win :ayatollah:

They were the team that pipped us to the Division One (now Premier League) title in the 1923-24 season (by a still record 0.02 of a goal) and they then went on to win two further titles to make it 'three in a row'; a feat only replicated by Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal

Also the founding place of Rugby League, they have a top table place in the annuls of sporting history

I seem to recall their stadium was one of the original designs under consideration when Ninian Park was first seriously considered for replacement

Good luck Huddersfield Town! :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

The countries a small place a bit of extra travel is nothing compared to letting ANOTHER team get their grubby hands on the Premier League riches and parachute payments.

Reading have been there last so they are the better of the two and stops another club joining the Prem club.

I'm not bothered by such stuff and the team that go up will be the one who earned it THIS season, regardless of preferences ;)

I didn't want the Jacks to go up but on the day they deserved it! :|

Complete neutral on this but it would probably be better for us if Reading go up, Huddersfield will more than likely lose Wagner in the summer if they don't go up and will prob be weaker next year whilst if Reading stay down I could see Stam staying and them going all out for it next season.

Distinct lack of quality being shown by both teams,my prediction is that whichever team that eventually reaches the Premiship will come straight back down

not sure if it's same season you are talking about , but I read somewhere that if the points system was 3 points for a win back then (when Huddersfield beat us to the title) instead of 2 points then we would have won the that season instead

For those saying straight back down how many would have said the same when Palace won the Play Offs the year we went up but they ended up doing far better than us and Hull and will be in their 4th year next season. Bournemouth the same 3rd season coming up, I doubt many predicted that.

It will be hard for them absolutely no doubt about it and it does look like its getting harder with the 3 promoted sides last season filling 3 of the bottom 5 places but you just never know, and if the likes of Stoke, Swansea and the teams above can do it then there's nothing to say they can't survive, they have a good manager in place so that's a good start, time will tell.

agree odds are always 3 promoted teams to come straight back down , will be tough for them though all depends who they sign

Well they are going to need a major overhaul as out of 25 games won 22 were won by a single goal and ended season with a negative goal difference ! Not a recipe to stay up. :old:

There's only one Ian Holloway

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... loway.html

Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner couldn't resist a swipe at QPR manager Ian Holloway after his side defied expectations by sealing promotion to the Premier League.

The Terriers are returning to the top flight for the first time in 45 years after overcoming Reading 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.
Christopher Schindler scored the winning penalty after Liam Moore had blazed over and Jordan Obita saw his effort saved by Danny Ward - and Huddersfield boss Wagner was delighted to prove his critics wrong.

Holloway was working as a TV pundit at the start of the season when he predicted the Terriers would be relegated by the end of the campaign.
During his role for Sky Sports last August, he wrote in his column: 'I haven't seen much progression from the club during the back end of last season. David Wagner is pretty inexperienced and if results turn, then they may struggle to turn things around.'

WHAT HOLLOWAY SAID
'I haven't seen much progression from the club during the back end of last season.
'David Wagner is pretty inexperienced and if results turn, then they may struggle to turn things around.'

'I think around Christmas I thought we have a real chance to come into the play-offs. I think this whole group of players deserved it over the season.'
The club's owner Dean Hoyle, who has been supporting the club since 1969, wept with joy after seeing his side emerge victorious - and said that Holloway's prediction had spurred the team on.
'I've just been in the dressing-room, and they're all singing about Ian Holloway,' he told the BBC. 'I think it is Ian who has driven us on this season!'

The Terriers did not win a game or score a goal of their own during the play-offs, and become the first team in Football League history to win promotion with a negative goal difference.
But fans who have had a season ticket at the John Smith's Stadium since 2009 can now look forward to Premier League football at the cost of just £100.

Neither side impressed during a tense 120 minutes at Wembley, with the Terriers having the best chances early on through Michael Hefele and Izzy Brown - but they can now look forward to at least £170million in prize money.
Captain Mark Hudson - who was an unused substitute - led the celebrations as he lifted the trophy with the players later filmed singing, 'there's only one Ian Holloway' in the dressing room amid wild scenes of joy.

Jonathan Hogg, who took over the armband in Hudson's place, went up to collect the trophy with his team-mates, with the midfielder taking a GoPro stick with him to share the moment with his fans.
Huddersfield, who finished fifth in the regular Championship table, will be the 49th team to play in the Premier League and will be in the top flight for the first time since 1972, with the celebrations in West Yorkshire set to go on long into the night
