" CONTRACT TALKS ON HOLD FOR CARDIFF CITY PLAYER "

Whittingham's contract expires in the summer, but Warnock wants to wait to discover what finances he will be given in the summer before continuing talks with the club stalwart

Wednesday 8th March 2017

By Chris Wathan

Neil Warnock has put a hold on contract talks with Peter Whittingham as he looks to finalise his Cardiff City budget for next season.

And the Bluebirds boss has told other stars they will have to wait for him to assess his wage bill for the new campaign before any calls on new deals are made.

Long-serving Whittingham sees his Cardiff contract expire this summer, with Kadeem Harris also thought to be among the first-teamers waiting for a new agreement.

Warnock has previously admitted that an offer was on the table for the 32-year-old Whittingham, who made his first start in six games in Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with Blackburn.

And Junior Hoilett, who signed a short-term deal in October after arriving on a Bosman, has also claimed he has begun talks over staying and that he would be keen to sign.

But, as Cardiff's financial balancing act was illustrated with the release of their latest accounts that showed an £8.74m loss for last season, Warnock has now stated that he wants time to make budget calls after citing the club's need to fall into line with the Championship's Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

Asked specifically on Whittingham and his contract situation, Warnock said: “There's no news. With FFP we have to see what we've got. The lads out of contract, we can't rush into that because we need to see where we lie, we need to get the wages sorted with one or two other decisions to be made in the next few weeks. So whereas I was going to try and make it an urgent thing, it's not the case at the minute.”

Still, Warnock did stress that there had been no change to plans for transfers ahead of his first full campaign having only recently committed himself to a new deal on the back of assurances about money to spend.

Asked on the back of the latest accounts that he still had his summer budget sorted, the veteran boss said: “Absolutely. The way we are looking as a club, the owner and the chairman are going to give me the tools to have a go and I don't see why not because I don't see many better teams than us.

“We can improve, like at Blackburn if we kept possession of the ball a bit more we could have picked them off. But we are always learning and then the summer we will try and get the players in we want and look forward to a pre-season.”

Read what he's said and at least he makes sense! Basically he's said his plans are still going ahead but is delaying giving several players new contracts until finances sorted to comply with ffp. :occasion5:

i have read it mate. where have i typed anything that sugests i havent.?

Whitts was already offered a new contract.which he obviously didnt jump at. now further talks have been put on hold ,i assume that also means the original offer withdrawn ? add to that he is no longer a 1st choice and infact hardly gets any minutes when a sub. i posted a thought. i dont think he will be with us next year. agree, disagree, just dont be a silly sausage

its all down to the manager and how he envisages our team playing. at present Whitts doesnt fit the combative midfield NW is playing. will be a very interesting summer window just hope its more productive than last years.

Not sure what you are talking about I just posted my own opinion on subject? If I reply to someone I post within their quote!! I don't think he'll be here next season either!

We'll still need a passer in the team. The blood and guts stuff is great and the fact we have genuine pace up front is brilliant but the ball needs to be skillfully placed there. Teams won't come to the CCS and take liberties like the Trollope era, they'll sit back and soak the pressure and hit us on the break (exactly what we do now). Aimless ball after aimless ball won't break decent defences.

I don't think Warnock wants Whitts (not a 33 year old one), he is not his type of player, he wants pace. And if we set up for that I am happy, it has been the mish mash of styles that have hamstrung us since Malky.

I am not sure of Whitts worth, would he fit into a Fulham, Barnsley or Reading team, yes. So if you are not going to be happy why stay ?

I have never thought Whitts likes football, he is just good at it. Would he drop down and drop down to keep playing ? I just don't see it. Player / coach, captain of the very Young but footballing focused Bellamy U23's, maybe :ayatollah:

The sort of player who would be great for us is Aaron Mooy of Huddersfield. Now he looks a bit special at this level and would be a great creative complement to Gunnar and Joe.

We can't compete with Huddersfield or Fulham wages anymore, it needs to be less recognised.

we all ready have Emyr Huws who could be class if NW can get him to play his way.
he seems to be doing well for Ipswich and tbh i dont see anyone else falling over themselves to take his wages on.

I have said many times we won't see the likes of Whitts again however NW wants players who run through brick walls and can be consistent over many games.

So that looks like Whitts will be gone but that also means Noonie, John, Pilks, Huws, Okeefe, Kennedy and others will be gone.

Imo NW will be looking at 8 players at least with fees, loans and frees making them up.

Both Whitts and Manga are mentioned as being on s joint weekly wage of 47k. We could get 4 players for that amount so it makes sense!!

Wez, Whitts was offered a new contract, yes it was less than half what he gets now, he never signed it,so he might lose out all together now as I think he has failed to impress Warnock.

Whittingham had had the contract in front of him for nearly two months to sign, now put on hold.

I dont think you understand this brand of football mate. The first ball is irrelevant! Its battling for the the secondball, and creating unbalance witch is the point of it.. Wanting 5 or 6 players, with his budget of 5/6 mill. Good luck replacing him! Specially that most of our goals seem to come from set pieces..

I'll leave it all up to Neil Warnock. His progress to date suggests he can be trusted to make his own squad decisions within the constraints he will find himself under...

Best 'manager' at Cardiff City FC for some considerable time and I struggle to think of anyone in my time that has had a bigger direct impact; other than the legendary Eddie May  :ayatollah:

I agree with you and we should just leave it to NW to make the decisions regarding who goes, who stays and who arrives. Having said that I think contract talks being put on hold, for a number of players not just Whitts, has a lot to do with ST sales. Selling more ST will give the club and NW more flexibility with the planned budget. Sell the same number or less than this season and cost cutting will remain with us, no matter what is being said about supporting the manager.

As for Whitts we may have arrived at the point where he leaves the club but what a contribution he has made over the last 10 years. There are so many good memories from spectacular goals, stunning freekicks, countless fantastic assists and of course the technical ability to spray top class passes around the pitch with ease.

Whitts has been a model professional during his 10 years with our club and let's face it we have never had "A Story" about Whitts being out on the piss or turning up for pre season overweight or debt collectors at the training ground. Whitts has been an exemplar and for that the very least he deserves is our respect.

Comments like he has had his chance or been overpaid for years are quite frankly sickening and thoroughly undeserved of a player who can truely be described as a club legend.
