Too many clubs over the years have suffered from events outside fans’ hands – Portsmouth,Leeds and Cardiff being three prominent and differing examples. But while fans sometimes worry about how their club is being run or who may take it over, they shouldn’t be faced with the prospect of the local council taking decisions that could destroy its future in their home ground, as seems to be the case with Millwall.

Millwall having to leave Den would be "heartbreaking" - Lib Dem leader

Farron has called on the council to reconsider its proposal to carry out a compulsory purchase order for plots of land around the Sky Bet League One outfit's stadium and then sell them to an offshore developer - a decision which is expected to be confirmed at a council meeting on Wednesday.

"Football clubs are a crucial part of British society and are at the heart of our communities," Farron, the first senior figure from Westminster to speak on the issue, said in a statement to the Guardian.

"I know how heartbreaking it would be for Millwall's fans and the local community if their club was forced to move against their wishes. The details of this case seem quite extraordinary and I hope that the council don't take actions that could risk the club's future in the area.

"Fans often worry about the impact a change of owner may have on their club's future, they shouldn't have to worry that a club's own local council would have a profound, unwanted impact. Sometimes fans and clubs need to move ground, or change how they operate, but this should be done with the fans having their say."

The Lions have played in Lewisham since 1910 and at their current ground, The Den, since 1993 and the club are concerned about the long-term repercussions a possible move from south-east London could have on the Millwall Community Trust and the club's youth academy.

A few of my good friends are Millwall fans, proper club with proper fans regardless of their reputation. Another victim of modern football.

Although we have had "abit" of history with these fans and I am certainly no pal of theirs, As a cardiff fan I know exactly what it feels like when your beloved club is under threat! Whether that be a partial change in identity, a relocation or almost a complete change in identity and relocation such as Wimbledon - MK Dons etc! I know how on edge, nervous, upset and angry it can make one feel and our supporters should know that first hand! That is The lasting effects and damage to a fan base that this can do. - even destroy a fan base! Thank god Tan put us back to blue, yeah ok the yellow is missing and the badge has changed but pretty much we have our identity back with some of our fans returning from old since this has happened.

So although I don't particularly like them, when it comes to something like this and thier fans will be desperate I will not hesitate to help! Petition signed!

Whatever history there is it'd be very poor of any of us not to feel sympathy and not to unite with Millwall in this situation.

Sometimes in life you've got to be the bigger man and respect that this isn't about petty rivalries with grown men who should know better.

It's with the father and son, the kid dreaming to turn out for his local club... it's about time we let corporations know that we the people will not tolerate having our identity ripped from us time and time again. This is another line in the sand.

Signed.

The difference was we allowed our history, identity, pride to be taken from us, no wonder so many laughed as we ourselves never stood up for our own identity.
Hopefully we have learnt from it.
I never want to see any fellow football club go under or lose their home etc

We've got more in common with Millwall than most other clubs despite our rivalry over the years. On a personal level a Millwall fan saved my arse back in 1975 when knives were pulled and I thought my number was up.

Is it safe nowadays to go there as an away fan? By whatever means with your clubs colours on ?. Or is that still a suicide mission?.just wondering its 2017 after all or are they still in the dark ages?

Re: ' Help Save Millwall FC '

Tue Jan 10, 2017 7:43 pm

If this is allowed to happen, could happen to others around the country, especially London, Charlton? Orient? Its the lower league clubs who will suffer. West Ham just about given the Olympic Stadium while Millwall are told to feck off else where! :( . I also see today Kempton Park race course is going for housing!
