Cardiff City Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of Greg Halford from Rotherham United for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance.

The versatile defender and midfielder has linked up with the Bluebirds, after signing a contract committing him to the Club until the summer of 2018.

Halford, who is comfortable operating in a number of positions, began his career with Colchester United, where he made over 150 appearances.

The thirty-two year old boasts Premier League experience with Sunderland and Wolves, and has also notably represented the likes of Sheffield United, Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion in the Championship.

After moving to the AESSEAL New York Stadium in July 2015, Halford made thirty-eight appearances for Rotherham United, where he played under Neil Warnock last season.

He becomes Cardiff City’s first signing of the January transfer window. #HalfordIsABluebird

Cardiff City agree deal with Championship rivals Rotherham for defender Greg Halford - reports

Warnock is looking to bolster his defence, with out of favour Gabon international Bruno Manga being unavailable due to his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations

Cardiff City have agreed a deal to sign defender Greg Halford from Championship rivals Rotherham United, according to reports.

The former England under-20 international has a wealth of Premier League and Football League experience having played for the likes of Reading, Sunderland, Wolves, Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest.

It is thought Neil Warnock is an admirer of the 32-year-old defender who he worked with last season during his time in charge of the South Yorkshire club.

And HITC Sport claim the Bluebirds have agreed a deal with the Millers to bring the versatile defender, whos contract expires at the end of the season, to South Wales.

Halford has made 15 appearances in all competitions so far this season for Rotherham - scoring one goal in a 5-4 EFL Cup first round defeat to Morecambe in August.

He featured in the Millers' 2-1 defeat to the Bluebirds at the New York Stadium a month later but is now believed to have agreed a deal for a nominal fee to join Cardiff.

I'm not sure about this. Does it just mean that Bruno will definitely leave? Though Halford can play in a number of positions.....very similar to Connolly.

Good solid pro.. Decent leader too.

It may mean managa will leave or possibly Morrison.

Not a huge fan of Morrison but either way we needed an extra body with manga away for up to six weeks.

I'd guess that there are only two ways Bruno won't go in January:

1. He signs a new contract on much reduced wage.
2. Nobody comes in for him with an offer he fancies and he goes as a free agent in the summer.

Much as I'd love him to stay I just can't see it happening.

It'll be Bruno. He's on high wages and we could get a tidy fee. Pity, coz he's been brilliant recently.

Good solid pro with lots of experience. Covers a variety of defensive positions- may mean Peltier, Richards or Connolly could leave but a least a replacement is already here. Also cover while Bruno is away.

I thought he was crap at Pompey and if he's a centre back for a team bottom of the league then it doesn't look good. Hoping I'm wrong but I've not got high hopes for this one

You'd want Morrison to go?.. our biggest goal threat

Morrison aint going nowhere, Warnock loves him by all accounts, he needs to put all the stupid stuff he's done in the past behind him and concentrate on his defensive abilities as he could be a great leader in time.

Halford will be a quality addition to our back 4 / 5, welcome aboard Greg :bluescarf:

I'm pretty sure this guy is a utility player and has even played as a striker and often plays in midfield. So possibly not a replacement for any of the current first team players.

out of those three, Yes. Might not be any of those.
too many costly mistakes at the other end of the field also not captain material and from what I hear has some off field issues as well. :occasion5:

Cardiff City have announced on their official website that experienced defender Greg Halford has joined the club.

Greg Halford joins the Bluebirds from the Championship’s bottom club Rotherham United for an undisclosed fee, with the move still subject to international clearance.

The 32-year-old has put pen to paper on a one and a half year deal which will see him stay in South Wales until the summer of 2018.

Halford is a versatile player, who primarily operates at right back or centre back.

He has also been known to fill in across the midfield and even as a striker when needed.

Is he the one with the long throw?

Not really sure what this signing signifies. He is getting on and is a bit of a journeyman.

But he has played under NW recently so he knows about him.

Best of luck to him although unsure how much game time he will get.

I would bet my left testicle that it will be Manga. For a multitude of reasons.

Hi there! Millers fan here, first of all I'm not here to cause arguements or get into scuffles with you! Just wanted to give you the opinion of most millers fan on your recent signing.

Greg on his day can be a fantastic addition to any team in this league! But it's just a shame out of the 38 games he played for us he only had about 6/7 ok to good games, and they just happen to come under warnock. His attitude towards our club was all wrong from day one, was given the captains armband when he arrived but his dismal performances at centre back lead to him been stripped and losing his place which then turned into a farce with him taking to twitter to rant about the club for around 4 months. His attitude towards the managers in charge didn't change until warnock come in at end of last season and made him the first name of the team sheet. He started this season poorly and his performance in our efl cup 5-3 defeat to morcambe was single handedly the worst performance from a person playing cb for 24 years of me watching the millers. His attitude was almost in the brackets of, I'm too good to be playing against these, he got outpaced by a aging 39 year old for 2 of the 5 goals and for the last one got done over the top and stopped running as to say I'm not bothered if it goes in or not. I'm sure most millers will agree that on his day, he was decent but most millers are glad he has left, for 6 months he stole 10k a week without playing, gave cryptic messages on twitter and got involved in spats with fans on social media.

I'm sure at his age, his best days are gone but maybe because cardiff are a bigger club than us, his attitude will change because he has bigger crowds to play in front of.

All the best for the season ahead, warnock will pull you out of it like he did with us, just a shame he realised what a sham our club is and got out when he could!

Yep he has a hell of a long throw on him ,he was really good when he played for Wolves ,but a bit long in the tooth now.He will give his all though.

I'm here to give any player a chance but any nonsense of that sort by Halford won't go well with the City diehards and he will be out on his ear in no time.

Wow. How on earth is going to replace anyone in defense? Nothing but another journey man, and it makes me feel like the signing of Revell.. Hope he comes cheap, and nothing but a squad player, surely..

Soli, thanks for taking the time to post your views. Good luck for the rest of the season but I fear your team are doomed and will be in league 1 next year.

I'm sorry, but you think there are no three teams worse than Cardiff that could go down instead? I don't think there's a Cardiff fan in the land that believes we'll go down this season.

Clueless if you ask me.
