Malky Mackay's emotional Cardiff City admission: I still think, could we have kicked on to the top half of the Premier League?

21 AUG 2016

BY DELME PARFITT

The Scotsman has spoken of his 'great fondness' for the Bluebirds fans and said he can't help thinking what might have been had he stayed in charge

Malky Mackay

Former Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay has admitted that he still wonders whether the Bluebirds could be aiming for the top half of the Premier League if he had stayed as boss.

Mackay was sacked by the club in December 2013 following a public falling out with owner Vincent Tan, who accused him of over-spending in the transfer market. The Scotsman refused a request by Tan to resign before his dismissal which came at time when he enjoyed the overwhelming support of the fans.

The following August a furore blew up around text messages Mackay sent while in charge of Cardiff which were, by his own admission, ‘very regrettable and disrespectful of other cultures’.

Two years on from the rumpus, and after an unsuccessful spell in charge at Wigan, Mackay has told Sky Sports that he still thinks about Cardiff City...and what might have been.

“There are times you are going to feel ‘what if’, what could be happening, where could we be at the moment in terms of how could that club be going now,” said the former Celtic defender.

“Would we still be in the Premier League? Would we kick on again? Would we be in the top half of the Premier League?

“It’s mostly about professional pride.

“I’ve got a great fondness for the fans down there and the people that were there at the time.”

Mackay is understood to have applied for the Celtic job earlier this summer, which was eventually taken by Brendan Rodgers.

And he opened up on the challenges of being out of work since parting company with Wigan 15 months ago, the support he has had from his peers and the different environments he has visited to broaden his coaching knowledge.

He added: “Right away when I came out of work Tony Pulis called and said ‘ come and a day with us here at West Brom’ which was fabulous.

“Alan Pardew is another one who has done the same, Brendan Rodgers did the same at Liverpool.

Cardiff City must learn the lessons of high tempo comeback after listless first-half showing frustrates
“I also have to think further afield, about going abroad, and I went over to see David Moyes in San Seabastian, which was fabulous.

“Even different sports. I made a contact when I was on holiday in America and went out to see the San Diego Chargers.

“I spent a few days at their training ground and in terms of how it is laid out and in terms of their recovery and rehab strategies are concerned, there were things to pick up from them.

“I went to the Special Forces in Hereford as well, I have a friend who is there, so I went and gave a talk to them about crisis management in sport, which I have a fair amount of experience of.”

He continued: “You just have to make sure you protect family, protect those around you and keep yourself busy.

“You keep going to games, keep going out to see people.”

Happier times as Cardiff City Chairman Vincent Tan (left) and manager Malky Mackay acknowledge Bluebirds fans
Asked for his reaction to people who believe his past mistake over the texts controversy means he doesn’t deserve another chance, Mackay was philosophical.

“Everybody should be able to have a comment of anybody, but if you’ve got an opinion because you are involved in a situation or it’s an educated opinion then I take that more...certainly from people within the football community,” he said.

“There are a lot positive people who have said positive things and that is what I have to take heart from.

“But you need belief in what you do and that you are actually trying to do the best you can.”

Good riddance I say. Wasted a load of money on rubbish. If he so great and honourable why no one touched him bar a desperate Wigan?? Good luck to him in the future though as everyone deserves a second chance. But personally glad he never get close to Cardiff again.

He's joking surely. Probably, in the history of Cardiff City, no-one has shown the utter contempt for the club and its 'people', that this man has done.

He's a football pariah, with few - if any clubs - willing to take him on, and rightly so..

I have to agree. MM's downfall was his hopeless ventures into the transfer market with big money. Andreas Cornelius simply cannot be swept under the carpet as that was a transfer of total ineptitude.

Just how we were supposed to make the 'top half of the PL' with that donkey leading the line is a complete mystery to me.

The most successful manager in our recent history? Yes without a doubt. But he had the full financial support (behind the re brand) in doing so. What I can't understand is how things all went so spectacularly wrong, starting with the signing of Andreas Cornelius. This bearing in mind that Malky & Moody claimed to have a "dossier" on all players they signed???

Hindsight being a wonderful thing, & Malky Mackay is bound to think "what if". He's had almost three years to think about it, after all.

I often wonder "what if " Dave Jones remained as our manager, & had the same level of financial support that MM had at that time? Would he have achieved the same, or even better things at City???

It's certainly thought provoking, if little else!

He was a great manager for us. His first season when he had about 10 first team players when he arrived, to guide us to the League Cup final and top six was a remarkable achievement.

Let's not forget he had a second interview at Celtic during the summer, which shows that clubs are still thinking of him as a possible candidate for manager.

Suppose we will never know. But one thing had he stayed and was successful we would still be in the Prem and still in the shitty red and black. Everything happens for a reason and if success was sacrificed for our identity back then so be it. I don't hanker after the Prem it isn't something I look back on in fondness to be honest but only bad memories, bar a few moments that gave me hope.
But I really hope Malky returns to management and is a success.

Me too, I've been watching the city over 40 yrs and that business is the worst ever done by this club.Makes me laugh the people who diss Tan at every opportunity yet love this guy because he used blow them kisses after every game.Talk about double standards.

Hard not to agree with these posts. Seems strange to me that no-one apart from Wigan have been willing to take a chance with him. Just my opinion of course, I have no idea of what really went on between him and Tan other than what I've read.

Acorn was a major f**k up but Everton Stoke and Locomotive Moscow were all looking at him when we signed him. There are plenty of big money signings that haven't worked in the premier league Danny Osvaldo Ricky van Wolfswinkle Kramric. We did sell acon for €3.5m
