Breaking News: Marseille fans attack Englishmen

June 2016

England’s first game on Euro2016 is on Saturday but Englishmen are already all over Marseille.

Last night they were attacked in the pub while they were drinking. Marseille fans could be doing this to make a revenge for the scenes in 1998. English fans were singing “ISIS where are you” earlier today. Police has used tear gas to dispense the English fans

Aparently tear gas is being used to separate English 'fans' from local gangs. So far just lots of different tweets but no official reports.

Why is it that the English are always involved in these events? Whereas the scots, Irish and hopefully the Welsh fans will go in a party mood and just enjoy themselves without annoying everyone else? Why can't the English just go to Europe, respect the locals and enjoy themselves?

They're like a pack of savages. Big fat sun reading f****rs singing No Surrender and 30 German bombers outside wonderful bars and cafes. And the English media just sweep this growing menace under the carpet.

Sorry but I just don't get the English mentality. Can anyone explain?

Whenever I read 'apparently' and 'no official reports' it usually means it's a load of cobblers. The vast majority of English fans will be well behaved - as will the vast majority of Welsh fans - its just the minority of dicks that will grab sensational headlines on crap newspapers and forums.

Euro 2016 off to violent start as England fans clash with French youths ahead of Russia opener

BY MARTIN FRICKER

One England fan suffered a serious head injury after being hit across the face with a wooden chair during the brawl in Marseille

Twitter: Clashes in Marseille ahead of the EURO 2016 football tournamentEngland fans clashed with French youths in Marseilles

Violence flared between England fans and local youths in Marseille last night ahead of the team's Euro 2016 opener against Russia.

One Three Lions supporter suffered a serious head injury after being hit across the face with a wooden chair.

Eyewitnesses said a group of local men attacked England fans as they drank outside a bar in the city's Old Port.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was cradled by fellow England fans on a pavement.

Riot police swarmed to the scene on a side street close to the area where fans had been mingling peacefully.

Some Three Lions followers retaliated by attacking local shopkeepers and other youths in the area.

One French business owner used CS gas to stop England fans getting into his store.

"They were baiting us, and then attacked,’ said one fan from Leeds, who identified himself as 'Simon'.

"None of the England fans were doing anything wrong – a few of us had a bit much to drink, but that was all.

"Suddenly a French gang appeared and started attacking us, and throwing stuff. We had to defend ourselves, and then the police showed up."

Groups of fans were then seen running in different directions, as restaurants and bars in the area quickly shut doors and pulled down shutters.

Others spoke of their fear as they were targeted by youths brandishing makeshift weapons, and shouting ‘Get the English’.

Chris Lord, another England fan from London, said: "This was a really nasty attack. The gang knew exactly where we were, and clearly wanted to hurt us."

As well as riot police, undercover officers brandishing stun guns and telescopic truncheons picked off anybody behaving badly.

Police first responded to the violence at around 11.45pm, and by midnight ambulances were arriving.

It was all a grim reply of the violence in 1998 which happened before and after England’s 1998 World Cup tie with Tunisia in Marseille.

Then, scores of people were hurt, more than 100 ere arrested or deported and some England supporters were later jailed.

By the early hours today, police had blocked off roads around the Old Port, using dogs and vans to stop traffic getting through.

Meanwhile, gangs of local thugs could be seen taunting England fans who were trying to get back to hotels.

British football fans are risking an unprecedented security threat in France this week – from hooliganism and terrorism.

It follows warnings from a range of security agencies, ranging from the U.S. State Department to French police that Islamic State terrorists are planning to strike.

France remains under a State of Emergency following last November's attack, with thousands of soldiers joining police on the streets.

On Sunday, French President Francois Hollande said that the threat of trouble would not stop the European Championships from being successful.

Mr Hollande said a 90,000-strong security force, including soldiers, would ensure the matches being played in 10 cities will be safe.

The England team are due to arrive in Marseille on Friday, and will stay in a city hotel before Saturday’s game.

Some 70,000 England fans – many without tickets – are expected to be in city over the weekend.

DAILY MAIL

10/06/16

French police have reportedly had to use tear gas on English fans in Marseille after violent clashes broke out when supporters started singing: 'ISIS, where are you?'.

Riot police used tear gas and baton charges after fighting broke out beside two bars where hundreds of supporters had spent Thursday drinking in the French city’s Old Port area.

Local French youths are thought to have attacked England supporters who had massed outside the Queen Victoria pub, and O’Malley’s, an Irish bar next door, before England's first group game of Euro 2016 against Russia on Saturday.

Marseille is a port city with a strong Islamic community. It is believed Muslims make up a third of the population, but it not known if religious tensions caused the fight.

This will have been locals attacking the English, not the other way around. This can easily happen to Wales fans and has on many occasions such as Germany, Belgium, Russia, Holland, Italy all away and all went off Badly.
People need to get all the facts before casting aspersions. It went off yesterday with some Cardiff attacking some Jacks on the ferry  :bluebird:

Two English football fans have been arrested after French police used teargas to disperse an apparent clash with locals in Marseille ahead of the first games in Euro 2016.

One England supporter suffered a head injury in the brawl after being hit across the face with a wooden chair.

French police in riot gear and accompanied by dogs were deployed on the streets of the southern city after trouble flared outside a pub shortly before midnight on Thursday. Police said one of the fans was arrested for assaulting a barman and the other for violent disorder. According to reports, local “ultras” descended on the pub, but this has not been confirmed.

Supporters have travelled to Marseille for England’s game with Russia on Saturday. The clash took place outside the Queen Victoria pub in the Old Port district after English fans set up camp there.

On Friday morning, teargas canisters could be seen lying on the floor alongside dozens of plastic cups.

Hours earlier, ambulances were seen arriving after police carrying riot shields moved in to separate the two groups and teargas was used to clear the area. Footage of the incident showed men hurling chairs, a brutal fist-fight outside a McDonald’s and chanting England fans surrounded by police officers with dogs. A clip posted on Twitter apparently showed the aftermath, as shop workers swept a street strewn with broken glass.

According to reports, some England fans were heard chanting: “Isis, where are you?”

Kevin Miles, chief executive of the Football Supporters’ Federation, which runs the fans’ embassy in Marseille, said he believed the locals turned up with the intention of provoking the English supporters.

“There’s not huge numbers of England fans in town yet, probably the biggest congregation anywhere was outside this pub,” he said. “People were drinking and having a bit of a sing-song all day, the French police were very relaxed, letting them get on with it.

“It was all fine until, our understanding is, a group of around 30 to 40 locals turned up, I think with the intention of provoking the England fans to see if they could get a rise out of them. In those circumstances, it’s the police’s job to prevent a confrontation and they used French methods to do so, which we’re not particularly used to.

“They used teargas, which is a little bit indiscriminate for my liking, but it did the job and the problems were over. There were a couple of arrests of English fans as they responded to that provocation.”

Miles added: “The police have confirmed that version of events. I understand one England fan has been treated in hospital for a head injury which apparently isn’t serious, and there have been two English arrests.”

Look at the video and tell me this looks like your archetypal 'English' supporters are not enjoying themselves throwing chairs, tables and other items whilst taunting the police and acting in a way that is now expected of them whilst abroad at football or on holiday?? :o

Yes, it isn't all of them and it may well have been instigated by the locals BUT it is a significant number; particularly once they've had a sherbet or two (plus anything else their on)

"Where are you ISIS?" songs?? FFS, grow up, people! Whilst no one should cow down to those terrorists, at least have some respect for those (particularly the French at the moment) who have actually been affected by them!

I bet the Europeans are quietly aching for an EU OUT vote result and who can blame them!

Little (minded) England indeed!

I can't believe they put England fans in the same area as the riots of 98, a place guaranteed for trouble.

But where could you put the English fans and have no trouble?

They've gone over there full of hate, pumped up by the prospect of Brexit, they've got red hand of Ulster flags hanging from bars, and they're singing songs like No Surrender and 30 German Bombers. Throw in lots of larger and hot sunshine and you're bound to get trouble. They've gone there, in very large numbers, looking for it.

Lets hope the Welsh fans copy the Scots and Irish when they go away. Full of song and colour but still respectful of the local population. Why large numbers of the English are full of hate is beyond me, i really just don't get it. It's like they hate the rest of the world. FFS they need to learn to chill out a bit!

But 90% of the time it features the English fans. Fans of Scotland, Ireland, hopefully Wales, and lots of other countries manage to attend football tournaments without having to sing racist songs and get involved in riots. So why do the English? What is wrong with them?

There is a school of thought that the French are keeping all the trouble in one area, glad I'm not out there I have a terrible feeling about this.

They wouldn't know those songs specifically but the fact that a mob of drunken males aged between 20 and 50 are singing songs linked to the political far right of England would suggest that they're not there to engage and befriend the locals like the followers of Scotland and Ireland might do - and hopefully Wales.

SKY SPORTS NEWS

French bloke who runs the bar where the trouble was last night as just said on Sky Sports News he heard no chanting about ISIS and the police over reacted and it was the locals that caused the trouble not the England fans
Yet the media get it wrong once again by printing photos of people out there which could risk them losing jobs etc typical journalists

We all know some England fans want trouble, but we also know the locals and media do as well.

I don't think you understand what Marseille is really like, when the Frogs got kicked out of NW Africa many of them resettled in the Marseille area, they are not overly keen on Muslim Migrants and are politically to the Right. They are not going to be offended by a load of daft Englishmen singing songs about Jihadi John.

Nothing new in France. Everton fans were attacked by a mob of locals in Lille the night before their game there a couple of seasons ago. Tough city Marseille and over 200,000 muslims live there. Good luck to the English lads.
