Welsh Assembly Election 2016: UKIP claims first assembly seats

UKIP has won its first seats in the Welsh Assembly.

Leader Nathan Gill and former Tory MP Mark Reckless are among five UKIP members who have been elected on the regional lists.

Reacting to the win, UKIP's Nigel Farage tweeted: "UKIP now stands up for many traditional Labour voters."

Labour are set to remain the largest party in Cardiff Bay with a tally of 27 seats.

But it suffered the shock loss of Leighton Andrews to Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood in Rhondda.


While the Tories made gains in Gower and Vale of Clwyd in 2015, the party failed to capitalise on either in the assembly election.

The final constituency seat to be declared was Cardiff West just before 09:00 BST on Friday which was won by Labour's Mark Drakeford, but saw his 7,500 majority cut to just under 1,200 by Plaid's Neil McEvoy .

As the UKIP regional seats were announced, the party's Sam Gould said: "This is history in the making, not just for Welsh politics but also for UKIP."

And new UKIP AM Mark Reckless said: "We will be a breath of fresh air in the assembly.

"It's been too cosy for too long."

The shock result of the election was when Leanne Wood ousted Labour's Leighton Andrews from the Rhondda seat.

Ms Wood said her victory, which was a 24% swing from Labour to Plaid, was a "new dawn" for Rhondda after claiming 11,891 votes - nearly 3,500 more than Mr Andrews.

Umm?? Did I miss something, Plaid 11, UKIP 6, Labour 29, Tories 9. That number hardly going to make a difference for a party who declared during the campaign that Wales doesn't exist! Sure our electoral system gave UKIP seats and as a Welshman I feel embarrassed about that.

UKIP will end up with 7 hopefully. Of course 10% of any parliament is going to make a difference, the UKIP story is incredible. It took decades for Plaid to get this sort of support.

It will be an interesting five years and I suspect the party will change massively/ may not even exist by 2021. They could literally redefine the term "false dawn" if they are not careful.

I know a few Kippers who are quite disappointed with just seven, so that makes me happy. Depending on how they treat the Senedd, they can actually play a constructive role- so well done to them

Personally I'm cuffed with the results as the context of Western politics is a massive rise of the right (even far right).

Yet in Wales, the left has a decent two-thirds majority. This will be important and proves Wales is still a fundamentally left wing country.

They ARE for local people as long as you live in England. They are hugely pro parliament for England yet strangely anti-Welsh Assembly... They are a one issue party ( EU Mmbership/Immigration) and the referendum will render them obsolete whichever way the vote goes..

Glad to see UKIP getting working class support. The working class have turned away from labour as they have done nought for Wales.

Pains me to say it, but well done UKIP. Clearly connecting to the voters and if they keep up these sorts of results nationally then the 2020 GE will be very interesting.

Not as bad a night for us (Labour) as we expected, but still the Tories will feel more positive than us.

SNP didn't really deliver as we expected, still did well though.

Green Party had a good night.

It'll be interesting to see what happens, but I can't see how a handful of ex-tory little Englanders will do much good for us in Wales.

Other than the EU referendum (which is already happening), what do people thing UKIP will bring to Wales?

I would imagine that UKIP will become less relevant in the coming months, and I'm sure there won't be seven AMs by the end of the term, but we'll have to wait and see.

David Rowlands - not a defector, but just read some of his previous interviews. Clearly a bit of a loon.

Gareth Bennett - Again, despite being a city fan, just read some of his recent stuff.

Michelle Brown - Seems fairly sensible compared to the rest. Wants to fight for fairness for North Wales rather than concentrating on the normal argument of immigrants coming over here causing stealing our jobs/clogging up our roads/making the place a mess etc.

Nathan Gill - Didn't come across very well on the leader debates, and was happy enough employing hundreds of immigrants before his company went bust.
