Because we are Welsh NOT English... If we'd belted out Mae hen Wlad fy Nhadau do you think the wurzels would have clapped politely??

Im welsh but my grandparents fought under that flag and would never boo it. England hasn't got a national anthem. God save the Queen is united Kingdom anthem

A divisive anthem due to its imperialistic overtones. It breeds resentment among three of the nations of the U.K., it breeds resentment among the working class of the U.K. And whether England does or doesn't have an anthem , it is used as the English anthem in all sports. Therefore it's got a bit of an image problem ...
My grandparents too fought in the war, but I suspect that most people didn't fight particularly for the royal family or a flag that doesn't particularly represent their community , they fought to prevent Germany invading the country and to protect their families and communities.

Good on you for generally showing respect though

Do you think they were singing it whilst thinking it's okay we're all British here, no were they f**k they were singing it whilst waving a dozen English flags. My national anthem is Mae hen wlad fy nhadau, in no way shape or form does god save the queen represent me. :bluebird:

We sang Mae Hen Wlad fy Nhadau before the game & in the first half? Did you not hear or weren't you there?

I'm 100% Welsh - but still British.

Wasn't there, hence me not knowing that it had been sung. Was that the point of this debate?

At the end of the day it's an awful song about a parasite born into wealth and unelected power who all is hard working tax powers are paying to keep.

What resentment does it breed in Scotland or Northern Ireland? Imperialistic overtones? Where are they?

Second or third verse about crushing rebellious scots?

45% of population of Northern Ireland seeing it as an anthem of an establishment that was perceived to be oppressive?

The sound trumpets the omnipotence of the English royal family who conquered Wales and put to the sword its own Royal households.

GSTQ is imperialistic by definition given that it heralds a triumphant Anglo-Norman aristocracy who stole land from the common people, thereby resulting in 90% of the land in the U.K. Being owned by the crown and the church, leaving 'common land' for the commoners ( poor), which is the worst, least valuable land that was left.

As I said, it's divisive to say the least

Stuff the Royal Flamily.

Proud to be British, but resent having lto be subservient to a family given priviledge by birth.

6th verse:

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

The sixth verse was said by a crank n Parliment and was never actually sung.
NI Republicans simply hate everything British, except our money. Hate the crown love the half crown.
personally Ive an ambivalent attitude to the Royals but think Phillip is hysterical, how long ago did the English slaughter the Welsh Royal Family? maybe time to move on. We're all British.

And rightly so. Everything to do with that rotten family doesn't deserve to be celebrated! Welsh NOT British!!

You don't have to be Welsh (or Irish, or Scottish) or be anti-English to dislike the monarchy.
I wonder what English republicians do when the anthem is sung!

Although God Save The Queen is the anthem for the UK as an whole I thought the English have adopted Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory as their own.

True

Additionally, they are warming towards "Three Wheels on my Wagon" in latter years, as well! ;) :laughing6:

(Originally sung by Dick Van Dyke of Mary Poppins fame ;) )

Most of my mates in England are republicans. They hate the monarchies anthem as much as I do. In the 21st century I find it amazing that people are so subservient to an unelected head of state, who represents everything that's wrong with Britain....being born into wealth and privilege.
