Vincent Tan has delivered a pep talk to Cardiff City's players and told them to excite the fans by shooting far more often and scoring more goals.

Thursday 11th Feb 2016

Cardiff's billionaire owner addressed Russell Slade's stars at the club's Vale of Glamorgan training HQ and declared the shoot on sight policy ahead of the weekend's clash with Charlton.

Tan revealed: "I gave them a pep talk and said they have GOT to start shooting.

"I told them David Marshall is keeping clean sheets, yet look at the stats. There are more draws than wins. David is doing his bit of the bargain, I told them, so clearly you guys are not scoring enough.

"In every match I want to see 30 or 40 attempts on goal, at least. Just shoot from 25, 30 yards, I told them.

"What's the point of passing, passing, passing and hoping to get in the box that way. Unless you're Lionel Messi looking for a tap in, it's not going to work.

"I watch every Cardiff match and I told them 'You guys have no confidence'. Peter Whittingham is capable of shooting and scoring score goals from 30 yards, so have a go, I said.

"Yet they get the ball and it seems to be like a hot potato. Pass it to somebody else straight away. You must see that, because I do.

"The law of averages says the more you shoot, the more you'll score. If you shoot 30 times you'll get three goals, 40 times will be four goals, 50 times and you'll get five goals.

about football. I've learned an awful lot, I see players regularly scoring in the Premier League from distance and we have to do that.

"It's very well passing, passing, passing, but do you get points for possession? No. When they change the rules, then pass the ball and keep passing the ball.

"But right at this moment the rules are you have to get the ball in the net. And you only do that by shooting."

To reinforce his point even more, Tan smiled: "Have you seen ugly men walking around with a very beautiful wife? Well that's because they've asked 30, 40, 50 times before getting a yes.

"On the other hand, you'll see a handsome man ask once, get a 'no' in response and that's it.

"So the more you try, the more success you'll have. We need a lot more goal attempts, we'll score more and win games.

"Not only that, the fans will love it, too."

He's right on Whittingham, to be fair. Whitts can hit some great goals from distance, but hardly ever has a go these days apart from free-kicks.

Its hard to disagree with the stuff he's saying tbf apart from the "if you shoot 30/40/50 you'll score 3/4/5 times" as football doesn't always work that way, But Marshall and the defence are keeping the goals out so out attackers need to start scoring goals.

I remember years ago when we were playing Exeter away I think,Bob Hatton who had a season with us before he retired was at the bar talking to the young Exeter striker who was asking him how he had such an impressive goals per game record(better than 1/3)and his answer was that it was a numbers game-The more you shoot.the more you score(he got his that day with a ricochet off his knee)We won 2-0 I think.

On the day that he pledged to write off half of the club’s debt of £140m, Cardiff owner Vincent Tan has urged his players to provide their fans with more entertainment by taking more shots at goal.

The Malaysian businessman, who took over the club in 2010, plans to convert £68m of the money he is owed into equity while writing off another £10m. With debts having stood at £174m when Cardiff were relegated from the Premier League in May 2014, Tan said he has already written off almost £20m and hopes to wipe out the debt totally by 2021.

But with Russell Slade’s side currently in ninth place in the Championship and five points behind the playoff positions, Tan visited the club’s training ground at the Vale of Glamorgan on Thursday to deliver some advice.

“I gave them a pep talk and said they have got to start shooting,” he told Wales Online.

“Have you seen ugly men walking around with a very beautiful wife? Well that’s because they’ve asked 30, 40, 50 times before getting a yes.

“On the other hand, you’ll see a handsome man ask once, get a ‘no’ in response and that’s it. So the more you try, the more success you’ll have. We need a lot more goal attempts, we’ll score more and win games. Not only that, the fans will love it, too.”

Tan, who is worth an estimated $1.2bn, has made similar demands of his players before. Former defender Danny Gabbidon revealed last month that the owner had called a meeting of the club’s defenders to tell them to shoot from the halfway line.
This time, however, he reserved his ire for the team’s more attacking players, with the exception of Peter Whittingham.

“What’s the point of passing, passing, passing and hoping to get in the box that way. Unless you’re Lionel Messi looking for a tap in, it’s not going to work,” he said.

“I watch every Cardiff match and I told them ‘You guys have no confidence’. Peter Whittingham is capable of shooting and scoring score goals from 30 yards, so have a go, I said.

“Yet they get the ball and it seems to be like a hot potato. Pass it to somebody else straight away. You must see that, because I do.

“The law of averages says the more you shoot, the more you’ll score. If you shoot 30 times you’ll get three goals, 40 times will be four goals, 50 times and you’ll get five goals.

“Don’t respond by saying I know nothing about football. I’ve learned an awful lot, I see players regularly scoring in the Premier League from distance and we have to do that.”

Tan also delivered his backing to Slade, who has come under pressure from some fans in recent weeks.

“I gave Russell a chance based on a recommendation. He was an honest man, based on what the club needed. I was looking for an honest, trustworthy manager,’’ he said.

“I am convinced that with this current group we can get promoted.”

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan has given a remarkable pep talk to his team's players, telling them they need to shoot at least 30 times a game and comparing scoring goals with getting beautiful wives.

"In every match I want to see 30 or 40 attempts on goal, at least. Just shoot from 25, 30 yards," he repeated to Wales Online.

"The law of averages says the more you shoot, the more you'll score. If you shoot 30 times you'll get three goals, 40 times will be four goals, 50 times and you'll get five goals."

But Tan wasn't finished there: "Have you seen ugly men walking around with a very beautiful wife? Well that's because they've asked 30, 40, 50 times before getting a yes. On the other hand, you'll see a handsome man ask once, get a 'no' in response and that's it. So the more you try, the more success you'll have."
