Cardiff want Leicester and Wales striker Tom Lawrence on loan

31st Jan 2016

Cardiff City hope to sign Wales forward Tom Lawrence on loan from Leicester City until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old recently finished a loan spell with Championship side Blackburn Rovers, but was unhappy as he hardly featured in any games.

Cardiff City are desperately hoping to wrap up a loan deal for Wales starlet Tom Lawrence before the transfer deadline after inching ahead of Championship rivals in the race for his signature.

Bluebirds boss Russell Slade wants two attacking options added to his squad before Monday’s 11pm cut-off, with Odense forward Kenneth Zohore one – via a loan agreement with Vincent Tan’s Belgian club KVK Kortrijk.

I really rate Lawrence, but we have several similar players. I'm hoping we get a good striker on loan, someone like Campbell, who can do it at Championship level.

dont believe we need another attacking midfielder/forward type.
striker we should be after and possibly a quick winger

He played upfront for Wales against Holland and was superb. Perhaps we do see him in that position? It seems to be a new trend putting midfielders up top lol. We have pilks and he's doing better than our other strikers, Liverpool don't play strikers in their league games, Chelsea started hazard upfront alone a few weeks back lol. Who knows. If he's being bought as a midfielder then I agree with your post.

Cardiff City lining up a loan deal for Leicester City's Tom Lawrence

The Wales starlet was unhappy at the lack of game time he got whilst on loan at Blackburn Rovers, putting a number of Championship clubs on alert

And it is understood 22-year-old Lawrence is the other man Cardiff have got teed up for the final hours of the January transfer window.

The former Manchester United scholar saw his short-term stay at Blackburn expire at the weekend having made it clear he wants guarantees of game time that he wasn’t getting at Rovers.

And it has alerted a string of promotion-aiming clubs who want to snap up the talented youngster with parent club Leicester prepared to loan him out for the remainder of the season.

Leeds and Hull are among those who have registered their interest but Lawrence’s camp have made it clear they want assurances he will have the minutes to try and nail down his place in Chris Coleman’s Euro 2016 squad.

He had been offered a loan contract at Blackburn for the remainder of the season but wanted to assess his options after Ewood boss Paul Lambert took advantage of Cardiff’s transfer embargo by signing Tony Watt from Charlton.

Now with Cardiff still able to do loan business, they are hoping to hold off rivals to land Lawrence in time to boost their own play-off hopes.

Lambert said after Blackburn’s 3-0 FA Cup win over Swansea City conquerors Oxford, “Tom is going back. He’s got the Euros to think of, and he’s probably seen Tony come in and thought maybe that’s his chance gone.

“But credit to him for the way he played when he came on and he goes away with big thanks from ourselves because he gave us everything and that’s testament to himself.”

Slade said following Cardiff’s 3-2 win at Huddersfield: “We do expect things to happen and people to come in. I’d be disappointed not to get what we’ve worked so hard for now. It will go right up to the wire but I’m confident of one or two.”

Lawrence broke into Coleman's squad in 2014 while still at Old Trafford. He made his debut as an impressive second-half substitute in the final Euro 2016 qualifier against Andorra before again catching the eye in the 3-2 friendly defeat to the Netherlands the following month.

I'm a big fan of his, great signing by the club if this happens. We'll have a much better side with Lawrence instead of Mason.

I agree, but I'd have still preferred Tony Watt though!

Would be an excellent signing for us and he's Welsh :ayatollah:

Really hope this is true. Got to give credit to Slade, Dalman and Choo if it comes off.

Would be a brilliant signing. He will be pushing himself by the fact he wants to be part of the Wales team in the Euros also.

Couldn't care less whether he's Welsh or not.

The question is whether he is ready to go straight into the starting lineup and improve the team.
