Dutch football experts Peter McVitie and Michiel Jongsma from benefoot.net, who can enlighten you on Immers' playing style

Feyenoord midfielder Lex Immers has agreed to sign on loan to Cardiff City tomorrow

Tuesday 20th Jan 2016

Media Wales

Is he someone who gets fans excited?

The intensity and pace of the game in the Championship will make it difficult for Immers to adapt and settle. His pace and lack of technique will be an issue, but his work ethic and the way he keeps going for 90 minutes will see him earn some respect in Wales.

What kind of player is he?

Immers is an attacking midfielder who, thanks to his height, is good in the air. He is not blessed with pace, creativity or technique, but he is a hard working player who gets into good positions and, although he misses a lot of chances, he can find the net often enough and is not a selfish player.

He has been linked with Premier League teams in the past, so is Immers above Championship level?

No. While he can be an effective attacking midfielder, he has too many flaws in his game to shine at a higher level and at 29-years-old, he is not going to develop into anything more than he is just now.

Why did he fall out of favour at Feyenoord?

Immers was an ever-present in the first team for three years following his move from ADO Den Haag. Feyenoord lost out on signing the extremely talented attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech because they insisted they would not allow him to play as a No.10 because of Immers’ presence. Meanwhile, they signed Jens Toornstra, who can also play that role, from FC Utrecht, but opted to push him wide in order to allow Immers to keep his place.

He really had the belief of Ronald Koeman and his successor Fred Rutten. However, there was always a sense that, while he was a capable performer and hard working midfielder for Feyenoord, for a team looking to challenge Ajax and PSV for the league title and enjoy more prosperous campaigns in Europe, they needed an upgrade for that position.

Lex Immers was also very popular with previous club ADO Den Haag, and has a tattoo of their crestLex Immers was also very popular with previous club ADO Den Haag, and has a tattoo of their crest
Giovanni van Bronckhorst succeeded Fred Rutten at the helm of the first team and it quickly became clear that he did not see any place in the team for Immers. There was no public falling out, but he ended up playing in the reserves during the summer training camp.

In the transfer window, Feyenoord signed Marko Vejinovic from Vitesse and opted for a midfield trio of him, Karim El Ahmadi and Jens Toornstra, with the latter being dropped for new signing Simon Gustafson.

Both players have better technique, offer better attacking support and are more mobile than Immers. Gustafson, at 21, has the potential to develop into a very good player for Feyenoord, whereas at 29 and underwhelming, it always seemed Immers would be on his way out soon – he had been linked to a move away in January 2015.

It made sense for Van Bronckhorst to leave Immers out as he looked to build a more cohesive midfield.

What about his character?

We know about his ban for anti-semitic chanting in 2011, is he someone who courts controversy?
Not really. His chant in 2011 was something directed at Ajax during his ADO Den Haag days, which is an aspect of Dutch football that is quite difficult to explain , so even though it's pretty reprehensible, I must stress he really can't be seen as an anti-semit. Other than that, he is not an offensive or controversial player.

Anything else we need to know?

Immers is also a massive darts fan and has said he wants to be a professional darts player when he ends his football career.

He said in September: “I even asked Raymond van Barneveld if it is possible to get into the PDC at my age. He says that it is absolutely possible. If you are sure you have the talent, then you should do it. I personally think it's possible.”

He even organised a tournament in Den Haag in November - in ADO Den Haag's Kyocera Stadion - in which some of his Feyenoord team-mates played. Sexy Lexy himself made it to the fourth round. Jelle Klaassen competed in it but it was young Benito van de Pas who won it.

f*cking hell thats not very endorsing. Sounds like an attacking midfield version of Revell. Works hard but no pace and poor technique.

Decent goal record though.

Well hopefully these guys are judging technique by the very highest ditch standards so he will be fine in the championship.

His goals records very good for a midfielder even though they say he misses loads of chances.

How will he fit into Slades 442?

I hope we have not got another Revell and Doyle.

But his goal scoring rate looks very good :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Let's see how he actually plays before we rush to judgement

He would fit in the 4411 we played at Wolves hopefully Slade sticks with it.

Yep certainly can't argue with his goal scoring record...looks impressive on paper...but not sure how strong the Dutch league is though...

Could do with somone that can bang a ball in from outside the box instead of being handed goals on the line

Translated to football talk, he's pretty shit really and his old club doesn't want him, but he will give it a go for you and even run round a bit.......

Sounds like one of our famous foreign signings that we only here about when they sign, and again when they leave saying we're a load or twots for not giving them a chance, then never hearing about them again......

Like Polo said perhaps it's based on a higher standard, means he's played for a few seasons for one of the biggest clubs in Holland I can see him being decent.

Revell and Doyle played at a lower level and Cardiff was a big step up, where as for Immers it won't be. :bluescarf: :ayatollah:

Was wondering that myself.
I expected he will be another player on the bench.

Just watched his YouTube and is more like a 2nd striker. Likes to arrive late on the box. Strikes the ball very well.

He's tall doesn't look a typical no.10 that is crafty between the lines.

Looks a f*cking head case too

His lack of technique in Holland doesn't necessarily mean that he has a lack of technique for championship football. Dutch players are some of the most adaptable players in the world so let's give him a chance if he actually plays for us.

He was a number 9 for Dan Haag so yeah I it looks like he can play 9 or 10.

He is nuts as well I've seen the clips.

One of the goals he scored for Haag was a worldie, his technique isn't too shabby either, looks quite an exciting player in my option.
