UPDATED

Nearly all the city fans who were arrested got sent down think we had 41 from Cardiff and about 11 man Utd they had special courts set up for after the game .the echo did a big lead up to the game for a couple of weeks .the crowd was 22.000 with about 10.000 Utd .but when we went there we only took a few hundred with about 11 on the train

Just come across some old pictures of City versus Man United at Ninian Park in August 1974, United won 1-0.

The headline on Twitter was that Ninian Park terraces were a battlefield.

Seen a few of these photos from the game previously but I never seen the colour image from the terraces before.

Half the grange end was Man U and half City supporters seperated by a couple of fences with a space in between for stewards and police. As the supporters could'nt get through the fences they spent a large chunk of the match hurling missiles at each other. Don't remember much about the match, but from the bits I can remember I don't think it was up to much.

Yes that's right! When I read Steves post I was nearly reaching for the cod liver oil. I think there was a small number on there early doors but were booted off there literally. I think the fence was a new one erected for the expected invasion lol. There was no prawn sandwich brigade that day from Manchester  :old:

You are right For some reason I seemed to remember that the fence was about a third of the way into the Grange end, but now you mention it I think It was closer to where the toilets were between the Bob Bank and the Grange end. I was over toward the Grand Stand side, although it may have still been the enclosure then. Memory is a bit hazy, a long time ago. Can't even remember how many were there that day although I guess it may have been a decent gate.

I was 11 at the time and remember pleading with my dad to take me to the game but he was having none of it! :laughing6:

No matter what chores I promised to do for the next month the answer was still no.

Couldn't understand why at the time - those pictures help explain my father's decision!

Indeed Annis.

Just could not work it out at the time! :laughing6:

It was just another City game as far as I was concerned and I was gutted that my dad wouldn't take me.

Thanked him a few years later when I eventually realised why he'd said no!

I don't remember a fence being there in 1974, I think it went up a few years later, City fans in the grang end used rush into the bob bank everytime a goal was scored against us targeting the cheering away fans in the bob bank. It was very hostile in those days. :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

The colour picture shows that the fencing was up between the bob bank & grange end, that's the hot tea & pie "snack bar" at the very back of the picture in the corner of the bob bank where the walkway under the then wooden grange end came out. Yes I'm old.

Trouble started around 8am at central station when around 20 of us came off and the aggro didn't stop till after 6pm that day.

I witnessed United fans being picked off around Queens St and running battles around the station and close to the old Empire Pool! United fans wrecked a pub opposite the station later on (can't remember the name) and there were running battles all the way down to the ground! It was a dream ticket for anyone looking for trouble and believe you me, that day there must have been 10,000 + on both sides looking for it. The Police were pretty much overwhelmed as it was going off all over the city pretty much at the same time! In the Grange end that afternoon, I saw holes appearing in the roof as bricks and small change peppered it and small pieces of debris descended on us below. I had a coin hit my head- right on the top as well ( stung like hell) :)
The Grange was so packed it was swaying back and for like the Kop at Liverpool once did.

Thousands of Cardiff turned up that day that never went to many games, if any at all, many turned up to fight with Man U.
After the match, I was again witness to running battles with their main mob of Cockney reds, I can 100% say, after several minutes off running battles, they finally gave up and legged it with City on their tails and many Utd fans who fell as they ran got a right hiding! I've never seen a day before like it and I've never seen a day since like it!

Had the Soul Crew been around then, then that day would have been like their dream come true!!!

I was there with my dad and a friend in the Grandstand so I had a good view. The match was poor but the terrace action was amazing. There were thousands of United on the Bob Bank. I saw one City fan jump over the fence and was submerged by United fans. I never saw him come out. The City fans were ballistic on that day and were not to be messed around with. It was really intimidating. United came down with many mobs. They did not realise what exactly they were getting into. I felt really sorry for the police.

I was 15 years old at the time and like most of the younger Grange End Crew joined in with the older boys. The fence was erected for that game as the press build the match up as a war between the rival sets of fans. Was the first time that I saw the Jacks joining opposition fans - there were a load of Jacks at the front of the United fans on the Bob Bank and they were the main targert for our rocks and coins. Mostly throwing stuff at each other during the game but after the game the police made the Grange end walk up the other way towards the station and we eventually clashed with the main group of United. A lot of running up and down the streets before overwhelming them near the station. Was a bit scary at times for a young 15 year old!

I was in that group of 100 led by Frank. Well I was told it was Frank hence why I join the group. Curiosity got the better of me as I had heard his name chanted many times in the Grange but had never seen the guy before.

People imagine that 100 against 100 they all get stuck in. Well some times that happened but most times it is just a handful getting stuck in with a few suddenly trying to become peacemakers and the rest watching. That's what happened in that counter.

I made my way to the Grange entrance only to be passed by the United gang mentioned in the article. My mate decided to call it a day as he did not fancy the queues. I recall being annoyed with the amount of people being there. Where were these lot on a normal football day. I agreed with my mate and we made our way back to the city centre rather frustrated.
