Previous Meeting: Match Report

The Netherlands completed their World Cup preparations with a comfortable win over Wales at the Amsterdam Arena.

Wales were missing senior players including talisman Gareth Bale and Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey but did give an encouraging account of themselves.

The Dutch led at half-time through Arjen Robben's goal after the Bayern Munich winger stabbed in a rebound.

Robben also created the hosts' second, crossing for substitute Jeremain Lens to score from close range.

Without the attacking talent of the injured Bale and Ramsey, rested for the trip to Amsterdam, Wales had to rely on Simon Church to lead them in attack.

The Charlton Athletic striker did not see much of the ball in the early stages as the Dutch pinned Wales back in their own half.

Wales boss Chris Coleman was also without skipper Ashley Williams, plus fellow defenders Ben Davies and James Collins.

But that allowed Hull City's James Chester to win his first cap, forming a new central defensive partnership with Danny Gabbidon, recently released by Crystal Palace.

After early chances for Robin van Persie and Robben, Wales settled and driven on from midfield by Liverpool's Joe Allen, leading his country for the first time, started to pose some problems for their hosts.

Neil Taylor released Church down the left and he showed his pace to scamper clear before sending an inviting low ball across the area, which needed a good interception from Bruno Martins Indi.

Robben finally broke Wales' resistance when Van Persie's shot was parried by Hennessey but fell kindly for the winger to poke home.

Van Persie was close to making it 2-0 before half-time as he opened up his body but diverted Daryl Janmaat's right-wing cross just past the post.

The Manchester United striker was withdrawn at half-time with a minor groin problem by Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal, who will be his club manager at Old Trafford next season.

Van Gaal must now hope that Van Persie will be fully fit for the World Cup match with holders Spain on Friday, 13 June.

Lens replaced him up front for Netherlands but it was Robben and Sneijder who continued to impress.

Coleman also sent on George Williams for his first cap and the Fulham youngster almost made a spectacular start to international football.

The winger slalomed through three Dutch defenders and only a last-ditch tackle from Ron Vlaar stopped Williams from shooting.

But just as Wales were harbouring hopes of getting something out of the game, the Dutch picked them apart to double their lead.

Sneijder collected a loose ball in midfield and with his second touch sent the ball inside Neil Taylor to find Robben.

The winger laid the ball across the face of goal as Lens arrived at the far post and the Dynamo Kiev striker sidefooted into the net.

Despite the defeat, Coleman can be encouraged by Wales' performance and by debuts that suggest there is a growing depth to his squad as they prepare for September's Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

Totally agree.

Wales are very similar to Cardiff City in that they don't concede many goals and then hope to snatch 1-0 win here and there.

However Holland will put 3/4 goals on us.

Any idea how many tickets have been sold?

Didnt put 3 or 4 past us last time we played them either.

i reckon a 1-1 draw, but wouldnt be surprised to se us lose by the odd goal.

How the f**k can you start to compare Wales and CCFC?! Poles apart, even without Bale and Ramsey!

You contradict yourself, as well. Wales don't concede many goals (kept two clean sheets against Belgium), but the Netherlands will put 3 or 4 past us?! No chance. They're in complete disarray at the moment. Remember, they failed to qualify. The Netherlands.

Looking like it'll be a sell out, or extremely close to being one.

Could get to see Wesley Sneijder & Arjen Robben play before their retirements.

Should be good, playing in the new kit as well.

Tom Lawrence to show his potential I think and put his name in papers.

Williams replaces Sam Vokes, who has withdrawn from the squad with a groin injury.

The Burnley striker joins an injury list that also includes Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, David Cotterill and Hal Robson-Kanu.

Wales take on 2010 World Cup finalists Netherlands in a Vauxhall international friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday evening as they begin preparations for the European Championships next summer. Netherlands’ surprisingly didn’t qualify for next summer’s tournament but their undoubted world class pedigree makes them perfect opponents as Wales prepare for their upcoming trip to France.

Friday the 13th will see a host of World Class stars visit the Cardiff City Stadium including Arjen Robben and Memphis Depay. Netherlands were beaten to the qualifying Play-Off’s by Turkey who remarkable finished five points clear of the Dutch. Iceland surprised many by qualifying from Group A with Czech Republic taking top spot.

Wales’ qualifying campaign was one to remember with Chris Coleman leading his men to a first qualification for a major tournament for over half a century. The Dragons finished second in Group B (only behind Belgium who are top of the world rankings) with one of the best defensive records throughout the whole qualifying competition.

Wales will be without a number of key players for the fixture as Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Hal Robson-Kanu all miss out through injury. David Cotterill is another who has withdraw from the squad for a second successive international break. Netherlands, however, despite dropping former star-man Robin Van Persie, have very few injury problems but boss Danny Blind is expected to experiment with a number of younger players.

You may recognize the surname of the Netherlands manager Danny Blind and rightly so, the former Ajax boss and player is the father of Manchester United full-back and Netherlands international Daley Blind. Blind Senior made over 350 appearances for Ajax during his playing career over a thirteen year period. Blind Junior didn’t do so badly himself making over one-hundred league appearances for the Dutch giants before making the move to England.

After a nightmare qualifying campaign (lead in the most part by Guus Hiddink), manager Danny Blind is looking to re-galvanize the Netherlands squad with an injection of youth. Blind will be using the Wales friendly to find out what players can cut it at the highest level so that he can put the best possible squad together for the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The fixture will be a difficult test for Wales, especially without a number of key players but two key aspects which got Wales through the qualifying campaign were team spirit and defensive quality, two things which should be unaffected for Friday nights game.

The two sides met in a friendly in Amsterdam during the summer of 2014, on the occasion, the Oranje Squad pulled off a comfortable 2-0 win with goals from Robben and Lens. Similarly to this weeks fixture, on that occasion, Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey missed out through injury. This weeks fixture will provide a stern test for both teams and one that both teams can use as a yardstick to measure how much they have progressed or regressed during the last seventeen months.

Wales will wear their new Adidas home kit for the tie, the kit was released earlier on this week along with the new grey away kit. The yellow goalkeeper kit was also among the released strips.

Squads

Wales
Wayne Hennessey (Crystal Palace), Daniel Ward (Aberdeen, on loan from Liverpool), Owain Fon Williams (Inverness Caledonian Thistle). Ashley Williams (Swansea City), James Chester (West Bromwich Albion), James Collins (West Ham United), Ben Davies (Tottenham Hotspur), Chris Gunter (Reading), Neil Taylor (Swansea City), Adam Henley (Blackburn Rovers), Paul Dummett (Newcastle United).
Joe Ledley (Crystal Palace), Joe Allen (Liverpool), David Vaughan (Nottingham Forest), Emyr Huws (Wigan Athletic), Jonathan Williams (Crystal Palace), Andy King (Leicester City), David Edwards (Wolverhampton Wanderers). Shaun McDonald (AFC Bournemouth), Tom Lawrence (Leicester City), Tom Bradshaw (Walsall), Simon Church (Milton Keynes Dons), George Williams (Fulham).

Netherlands

Riechedly Bazoer (Ajax), Daley Blind (Manchester United), Jeffrey Bruma (PSV), Jasper Cillessen (Ajax), Jordy Clasie (Southampton), Memphis Depay (Manchester United), Virgil van Dijk (Southampton), Bas Dost (VfL Wolfsburg), Eljero Elia (Feyenoord), Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Schalke 04), Daryl Janmaat (Newcastle United), Luuk de Jong (PSV), Davy Klaassen (Ajax), Terence Kongolo (Feyenoord), Quincy Promes (Spartak Moskou), Jairo Riedewald (Ajax), Arjen Robben (Bayern München), Wesley Sneijder (Galatasaray), Maarten Stekelenburg (Southampton), Kenny Tete (Ajax), Marko Vejinovic (Feyenoord), Joël Veltman (Ajax), Kenneth Vermeer (Feyenoord) en Georginio Wijnaldum (Newcastle United).

Chris Coleman gives Welsh youngster Tom Lawrence some valuable advice: Copy Jamie Vardy!
CHRIS COLEMAN has told rookie striker Tom Lawrence to copy his Leicester club mate Jamie Vardy and turn into an international star.

The Wales boss will throw the 21-year-old striker into action against World Cup semi-finalists Holland in tomorrow's prestige friendly in Cardiff.

And he believes Lawrence, currently on loan at Blackburn after getting stuck behind Premier League top scorer Vardy in Claudio Ranieri's pecking order, has the potential to put his own name on the world stage when Wales get to France next summer.

Coleman said: "We don't have Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey or Hal Robson-Kanu for this game and Simon Church can't play 90 minutes, so it is safe to say that a younger player will start.
"What a fantastic opportunity. You think of Jamie Vardy's progress, Michael Owen exploding on the scene in the 1998 World Cup, and ask can somebody else be that huge instantly? It happens.

"The story of Vardy is a great story, he's come from non-League, built his reputation at Leicester, and has done amazingly. It can happen just like that.
