MK Dons 2-1 Cardiff City (AFTER EXTRA TIME)

Attendance 5,617

Cardiff City played a strong team for this Capital One Cup 2nd round match. Connolly, Morrison and Fabio kept their places. Manga, Ameobi and Noone among those to come in.

City started the match well, and came close to scoring a couple of times in the first few minutes. After that MK Dons woke up but there were few chances for the rest of the half.

Second half City started well again and got a deserved goal from Revell :ayatollah:

After that the onslaught started from the home side as they made a triple substitution. They eventually got the equaliser, Moore should have done better, and nearly won in normal time but Macheda cleared off the line. Cardiff only just survived until extra time.

City dominated the first period of extra time but couldn't get the goal. In the end it was MK Dons who got a winner after a follow up from a good save by Moore.

Connolly and Simon Moore nearly scored at the end but Cardiff City are out of the League Cup.

BUT I could not understand Slade's substitution of playing Lee Peltier in centre midfield. It was very strange, when he had Kennedy on the bench who he signed?

My man of the match Craig Noone :ayatollah:

Peltier has played in midfield before for previous clubs, it's a position he is fairly used to playing, similar to Ralls at left back.

Ned, my opinion, Revell,Doyle and O'Keefe not Championship quality.

Must we still cut Slade some slack or will the reactionists now call for his head because we lost?

There were times when some players looked like they couldn't be bothered, but Noone especially worked hard.

Why bring him on when we have Kennedy on the bench, Noone can play central?

Still cut Slade some slack its only a cup game otherwise lets all call for the heads of all the managers of the teams that have exit the cup. :sladein: :ayatollah:

I expected us to win tonight after seeing the team, especially as MK Dons didn't have their first team out.

Cheers Annis, staying at Birmingham tonight but a disappointing evening.

Agree with you on Doyle, Revell and O'Keefe.

I said I'd judge him on the first 10 league games, and we're not doing bad in the league right now so no knee-jerk reactions from me despite how disappointed I am tonight.

What's the difference between No one playing central midfield and Peltier playing central midfield? Both would not be playing in their natural positions.

If we used the team from Saturday or almost the same it would of been a different story the cup is not important. :thumbright: :sladein: :ayatollah:

Because Noone has a forward-thinking brain, Peltier doesn't. Peltier struggled big time, and it was the wrong tactical decision.

I thought Kennedy deserved the chance, he's a young prospect at the club but Slade continues to ignore him even though he was his signing. Games like this are perfect for young players.

No that worried about being knocked out of the cup, we can concentrate on the league now. The only worrying thing is losing when we put out a strong side.

Maybe it would have been different. But I don't agree the cups aren't important.

Fans love a cup run and it creates a feel-good factor around the club. Think back to 2008 and 2012. Hopefully we can have a cup run in the FA Cup. I know you're ever the optimist, but a cup run would make our season a little more exciting as there's no real chance of promotion no matter what you, Trooblue Steve and Wez say.

Don't get me wrong I like cup runs as well and agree what you say but they can still bea distraction when we reached the final a couple of years ago we ran out of steam in the end and were lucky tbh to clinch the final play off place only to get murdered by West Ham and if you had to choose a cup final or promotion I know what I would prefer. :sladein: :ayatollah:

It was a strong side, but it also wasn't our usual starting 11 and the majority of our players tonight needed the run out to build up their match fitness. I think the fact MK Dons finished strongest shows some of our players tonight are not quite there fitness wise yet because of disruptive injuries or lack of game time. I think tonight was a good opportunity for some of our fringe players and reserves to get a full competitive game under their belt and that'll get them ready to step in for league games when required, which is the most important thing as we were never going to win this cup competition anyway. We seemed well in control for the majority of the game and they equalised with their first shot on target, so I'm not too disheartened at all.

How do you know that? We got to the final in 2012 and lost on penalties. Anything can happen. We are most certainly not going to win it now because Slade is absolutely clueless.

We were never going to win it this season because we are cost cutting and Slade has yet to spend a penny this summer. Therefore, we were only ever going to play our reserve/fringe players in this competition to keep our first team fresh for the league. I've read Moore could have done better for their equaliser. If Marshall was in goal, he may have saved their shot and we would have won 1-0. But this competition was always going to be used for giving other players an opportunity to impress, and rightfully so. Achieving anything in this cup competition this season was never a priority as far as I'm concerned.

Unlucky?

Come on. Get real. Fortunate to get to extra time more like.

The result is what it is but don't pretend that it wasn't important. If you want to get the fans back, cup runs can do just that.

Guess it'll have to be the FA Cup then. :bluescarf:
