Cardiff City will have to pay at least £2.5m to tempt winger Johnny Russell away from Derby County - nearly double the fee they were hoping could land the Scottish international.

Russell opened pre-season for County in sizzling form and scored in their opening fixture against Grimsby Town.

Manager Paul Clement was delighted with Russell’s performance after he went on for the second half at Blundell Park and Derby want to keep him in their squad.



Sources in the midlands suggest County could yet be tempted by the right offer, but Cardiff would have to pay £2.5m or more.

Depends on how much we want to pay him. If he thinks we can offer him a contract well in excess of what Derby will pay him, then he will put pressure on Derby to let him go. Its wages, not fees that are important at Championship level, and nearly all the power is with the player.

If they sign Gray then Russell surely won't be getting games so he may decide at this point he needs to be playing first team football to progress in the Scotland team

Should offer Noone in a swap deal. Hes highly rated by their fans and values are similar. Fresh start would for them and Noone will come good again. Hes gone stale with us

I think I speak for most Derby fans when I say i'd rather have Russell over Noone. Also, anyone got a link to the Gray rumours? I've heard nothing to say we're interested in him, and for the price Birmingham want I hope we aren't!

Cardiff City will have to pay at least £2.5m to tempt winger Johnny Russell away from Derby County - nearly double the fee they were hoping could land the Scottish international.

Russell opened pre-season for County in sizzling form and scored in their opening fixture against Grimsby Town.

Manager Paul Clement was delighted with Russell’s performance after he went on for the second half at Blundell Park and Derby want to keep him in their squad.

Russell was Derby’s best player against Grimsby, replacing summer signing Tom Ince after half-time and outshining his rival for the wide berth.



The stance at Derby remains that they will keep Russell, who even after the arrival of Ince is certainly one of their best wide men.

Derby made it clear a few weeks ago that Russell was not for sale, but Cardiff have kept their interest alive.

They have not made a firm offer, but Russell is still highly placed among their list of targets for the summer.


The 25-year-old is a firm favourite among Derby fans, having made the move from Dundee United in a £750,000 transfer two years ago. He has made 87 appearances for County, scoring 17 goals.

Cardiff are unlikely to pay a big fee for Russell because they are well blessed with wingers with after loan signing Sammy Ameobi joined Matty Kennedy, Craig Noone, Anthony Pilkington and Kadeem Harris in the first team squad.

It'll be £1.25million with addons that will take it to £1.5 million.

If the A list and B list was constructed with players like Murphy and Russell on the A list there's no way that the club could get away in purchasing these players for peanuts. If the 800K bid for Russell is true then it was obvious from the outset that that bid was way below the market value for an international who had a good season last year.

What is the point in the club having an A list when it is unlikely that they will splash the cash to get them. 4m for Murphy was way over the top and I think the club were right in moving on however it will be interesting to see if the club go back in with a 1.75/2m bid for Russell.

This transfer window will show the club's ambition or lack off. An ambitious club who want to get promoted cannot progress if they solely dip into the bargain basement alone. Even though Derby have had a strong squad for a number of seasons they have splashed the cash this summer to strengthen further. It may backfire but I would say that they are in a far better position to get to the promised land than we are. It would be nice to add a few quality players to our current squad.

Is that a joke, he's made two substitute appearances in two friendlies In a very average Scotland team I think people are getting carried away with this guy. He is worth £1.3 million at most. With the midfielders that Derby are signing he will be lucky to get a game, so if he has ambitions on going with the Scotland squad to the European Championships, then he needs regular first team football, that could swing his transfer our way

Maybe it's the price we are paying for not selling enough season tickets? Another 5,000 @ £400 = £2m.

But what's 2 mill to Tan?
Another few thousand season tickets purchased before the season starts plus the savings for the 8 or so players allegedly leaving & it's peanuts.
He's saying we're going for promotion so we have to strengthen & bring in better than we have. Every team does it if they have ambition & that's what Tan keeps spouting.

But we cannot just pump money into the team nowadays. Financial Fair Play stops that.

We stay within budget or the fines are astronomical. Owners cannot just add extra finances unless it is for the development of facilities and the like.

We have 8 players on the books that need to go BEFORE others are brought in. It's no good buying first and then being stuck with the others.
