Former Cardiff City hero Michael Chopra: I want to make sensational Bluebirds return

Fans' favourite Chopra believes he could still do a job for Russell Slade's men despite his career faltering in recent years
Michael Chopra wants to return to Cardiff City
Former Cardiff City hero Michael Chopra has issued a shock plea for a return to the Bluebirds, insisting he can still do a job for the club in the Championship.
The striker, now 31, was a big hit during two spells in the Welsh capital , scoring 65 goals in 162 appearances, including a memorable late winner against arch rivals Swansea City in a 2010 South Wales derby.
Chopra became the Bluebirds' then-most expensive signing in history when he rejoined Cardiff from Sunderland for £4m in July 2009.
He left Cardiff in a £1m move to Ipswich in June 2011 but has since seen his career stutter. Chopra had a poor season at Blackpool in 2013 before playing for Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League last term. He spent the tail end of the season in the second-tier in Scotland at Alloa.
Off the pitch he has had treatment for a well-publicised gambling problem, but he is on the look out for a new club and he reckons it could be third time lucky with the Bluebirds.
“I would like to see me coming back to Cardiff. I would like that to happen,” Chopra said in an interview with the Built on Sloper Road podcast.
“I 100 per cent definitely think I could still do a job for Cardiff. I definitely miss living there. It was a great city to live in. Obviously I lived in the city when everything was being built up to what it is now. You look at the city centre and all the apartments have been built up so great and so well. I loved it down there.
Would you take Chopra back?
YES
NO
“I keep in touch with people. I still speak to Peter Whittingham and Steve McPhail too. They are lads I got on really well with when I was the club. I still speak to the lads. Even when I play against players I used to play with I always go up to them and speak to them before the game.”

Can he still do a job for us ?
Now we are shopping at poundland and not Harrods this could be a good "cheap" option for our club, free transfers seem the best and most financially prudent way forward to sustain our championship position this season

I don't know if I would want him back tbh.
Thu Jul 02, 2015 12:44 pm
I'd have him back tomorrow on trial to what he's like - he certainly has an eye for goal and who knows he might still be an asset.
Thu Jul 02, 2015 12:48 pm
Loved the guy when he was here, but no for me.
Thu Jul 02, 2015 12:51 pm
Would love to see him back even if it was just to lift the morale in the changing room.

Free transfer, low wages, and good bonuses to motivate him and I will have him, probably wont be the annoying terrier for defenders he used to be. But would certainly be a better finisher than anyone we have now.
Thu Jul 02, 2015 12:52 pm
If he can get fit, and stay fit, keep off the drink, and get his head down and just work for the team, why not.
is 31, still a few years left in him

Strangely enough, I'd give him a go. He was good for us and always gave of his best. And who knows, it could work. In any case, I bet he try a bit harder than Macheda.

Would be one of our better strikers even with his beer belly and gambling history!
Come back Chops!

Chopra's not going to be daft enough to expect a 3 year contract, so he must think he can cut the mustard. Agree with an earlier comment, why not test his motivation with a trial and performance related terms ?
Thu Jul 02, 2015 1:32 pm
Get him back on a trial and if he gets fit enough and stays mentally strong give him a bonus related contract
Thu Jul 02, 2015 1:34 pm
I bet the local bookies would love to see him back.

Just shows how desperate we are if some of our fans are starting to want Chopra back...

Jon,
Totally agree, Chopra is way past his sell by date.
He is a problem player as well.

Bring him back. If it's passion and hard work that you're looking for, then Chopra fits that.
Slade and the backroom staff would put him on an intense fitness regime to get back into shape and he probably still has a good 4-5 years left in him.
City legend for scoring that goal against the Jacks so he is always welcome back here

He is a shadow of his former self. Indian League football & Scottish football. I don't think he could do a job for us.

Big mistake imo - Sounds like desperation

Agree with this, Jon!
The only people who want Chopra back (in a serious way) would be the 'Bookies' and Casino owners!

Not for me chef i'm full!
First time round he was amazing since then he was problem child. Correct me if i am wrong if rumours are to be believed he was checking his betting slips at half time, out on the piss etc.
Not for me! I will always remember his perfect hat-trick against Leicester and beating the Scum!

He'll be 32 later in the year. With his lifestyle, I doubt if he will still be playing at 37. Already way past his best, he wouldn't be with Alloa if he was that good.

Chopra is my favourite ever player to put on a Cardiff City shirt, but come on... not even bloody Blackpool want him and now he can barely do a job for some unknown team in Scotland. I love his passion for Cardiff and football in general but the demise of his career is purely down to him and he will never ever be player he was.

he would just be another earnshaw, great when he was here but not second time around.
Thu Jul 02, 2015 2:30 pm
Didnt leave on good terms as he was hungover on some games at the end of his last season, his head went out of control
such a shame as he was one of the most exciting strikers ever to wear the Cardiff City shirt.
I would have to say no but sad to say it as he should have been with us in the premiership if his head was good

Chopra Wants to return to cardiff......

Thu Jul 02, 2015 2:54 pm
