' RUSSELL SLADE AND STATS '

Russell Slade is obsessed with stats and it is something he relies heavily upon as part of his management. In his office the walls and his desk are covered by stats on players and performances.

His stats reveal that Fabio cost the team 6 goals last season.

Slade believes statistically Scott Malone is the best option as left back more than any other player in the squad.

Peter Whittingham is by far the best for passing stats.

Slade evaluates his stats and picks his team using them.

Is this really how Slade picks his team, using stats ?

Surely if stats are that important to Slade, he must recognise the possession stats are nowhere near what they should be too ?

Anyone can get stats and pick a team from that. If he doesn't coach either what's the point in him. Stats should show him we haven't been anywhere good enough.

Maybe he should look at his own stats.

At least he's got it right about Fabio. Defensive liability.

If Slade has his beliefs he must follow them through. There is nothing worse than a mish mash of philosophies.

IMO Mallone is a better flat back 4 defender than Fabio. But, I also believe that 442 is dead, opponents who play in the space between the rigid lines destroy us.

Whitts is by far our best passer and gunnar out best tackler. Mason our most accurate finisher and Doyle the most running. Our wingers goals and assist stats are shocking, they make up 20% of our outfield players and do nothing. But, there again I doubt you ever see both 442 wingers contribute at the same time.

The reason I want Slade out is he is playing to a football philosophy that every coach learns to combat in day 1 of modern coaching school. But, he must stick to his principles and die by them.

That won't be a popular view!! At the other end of the pitch I can't think of a single assist by Fabio last season but a few by Malone.

In fairness Fabio does get stuck in and that is a popular trait but think he should be sold with Malone and John fighting over the left back spot.

If he based his team on stats Noone would be nowhere near the first team. He contributed next to nothing all season.

Dead right mate, he is prone to the odd error occasionally but if every player showed the same passion and intensity we walk the league at a canter

Here's a couple for you Russell:-

Whitts hasn't scored from a free kick in over two full seasons but still takes every attacking free kick.

Our win % when Whitts was missing during the Slade reign - 100%

Sorry to pick on Whitts but if Slade is obsessed with stats he seems quite happy to turn a blind eye to those that don't justify some of his team selections.

have you never seen Moneyball Annis?

great film and stats are useful, but that doesnt mean the managers ideas are any use either

Not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. Stats don't reveal everything about the game.

It's a good thing he has some data and evidence to draw conclusions from.

But I'm against the idea fundamentally that one player costs a goal.nfoaks are scored and conceded as a team.

Stats won't show you passion and drive annis, that must be why Slades team seem devoid of those qualities sometimes.

It does, that's why his stats are so high :laughing6: AND I kid you not! He averages just above ONE tackle pr game.

You can add another one.......

We haven't scored as a direct result of a Gunners long throw for a long, long time. Even well before his injury if memory serves me right.

Yet Slade has now gone back to it!

Would be more useful in my opinion to try and work the ball shorter to one of our wide players to get a cross in from open play which is far less predictable for defenders to deal with.

That is if only our wingers could cross the ball.

Cant remember the game but we scored one from a flick on from a Gunnar throw a couple months back. I do however agree, playing it short is the way forward - asides on the odd occasion to mix it up and catch teams out. The ball comes in too slow and flat, it's in the defenders favour every time

Totally agree! Stats are only a tool to be used alongside actual observations and gut instinct. Play by statistics and become a statistic. :old:
