Cardiff City boss Russell Slade says if the Bluebirds 'win one more will follow'

Sunday 22nd 2015

By Terry Phillips

Slade's men haven't won a game since January 10, which is their only win in their last 13 League games, but the manager believes that when they crack it the floodgates will open

Russell Slade is adamant his Cardiff City team are on the rise, saying: "If we earn one win more will follow."

The Bluebirds are unbeaten in four Championship matches, but all have ended in draws and Slade's men are desperate for a win to lift them up the table.

They are without a win for seven matches in all competitions, they travel to play Malky Mackay's Wigan Athletic on Tuesday intent on gaining the three points they need.

Slade, though, insists that there won't be any extra pressure because ex-City boss Mackay is the man in charge of relegated haunted Wigan.

Slade and his entire coaching staff watched Wigan crash 3-0 at home against Charlton on Friday evening, while he says: "I don't think we will be distracted because Malky Mackay is Wigan manager.

"It's about being focused and ready. We are professional people and we are intent on winning a difficult away match.

"Our job is to do everything we can to win and hopefully that will help us get a run going. We are making lift difficult for the opposition right now and staying strong at the back, but we must get the win we need."

City were disrupted by the loss of Scott Malone with a hamstring injury midway through the first half. Lee Peltier switched to the left with substutute Matt Connolly going on at right-back.

"Lee did really well at left-back," said Slade. "The loss of Malone might have caused us a problem, but we still looked solid at the back. There is a composure, we don't panic when things don't go our way.

"There is an honesty and a good attitude about the performances.

"We got in some good crosses and had chances. Overall, it was frustrating we could not come away with three points.

"Huddersfield's goalkeeper (Alex Smithies) did well to keep Eoin Doyle's header out. He threw up an arm and somehow stopped it.

"The goals aren't coming for us, but if we keep playing the way we are then the wins will come.

"I felt positive going into this match and I'll feel positive before the Wigan match. We are making progress."

City are likely to stick with Connolly and Peltier as their full-backs even though Fabio is almost fit again after injury.

"Fabio and Federico Macheda could be back in the group for our match at Wigan," said Slade. "It's going to be close, but they have made good progress from their injuries."

Think we may scrape a 1-0 win here, possibly a penalty deciding it. If not, a 0-0 draw, I can't see us losing this one.

THE TRUTH "

By Gareth Rogers

Monday 23rd Feb 2015

The stark truth is that Cardiff have earned only one win in their last 13 League games under Slade, collecting only nine points from a possible 39 in that horror run.

That solitary victory, of course, happened to coincide with the buzz surrounding the return to blue when Fulham visited the Welsh capital on January 10.

Prior to that, you have to go back to a smash and grab 1-0 away win at Watford to fund the Bluebirds’ last success.

It’s not good enough, nowhere near good enough, and Slade knows that.

Cardiff have to begin turning their draws into wins and there is no time like the present, Slade taking his team back up north when they visit struggling Wigan tomorrow evening.

If there is one team in a worse run of form than Slade’s Cardiff, then it’s the side managed these days by their old boss.

Mackay simply hasn’t made anything like the impact expected up at the DW Stadium since he was controversially appointed, given everything that was happening from his time with Cardiff, as Uwe Rosler’s successor in mid-November.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan brushed aside the off the field Mackay fracas and was crowing about landing his man. But the fact is that of the 15 League games Mackay has taken charge of, the Latics have won just two.

Away to Leeds and Reading, not a single home victory to Mackay’s name.

It is a horrendous sequence of results which, barring a dramatic turnaround in fortunes, will see Wigan join bottom side Blackpool in League One next season.

There are many who still fear Cardiff will be joining them, but victory at Wigan should ease those pressures.

There for the taking
Wigan are there for the taking, booed off last Friday night when they crashed 0-3 at home to mid-table Charlton.

This is one Slade knows he has to target for three points and the Cardiff manager insisted: “I don’t think we will be distracted because Malky Mackay is Wigan manager.

“It’s about being focused and ready. We are professional people and we are intent on winning a difficult away match.

“Our job is to do everything we can to win and hopefully that will help us get a run going. We are making it difficult for the opposition at the moment and being strong at the back, but we must get the win we need.”

Whisper this quietly, but signs are there that better times could be around the corner.

Cardiff are becoming more difficult to beat with the outstanding Bruno Manga masterminding things from the back at Huddersfield.

He was clearly missed while away on Africa Cup of Nations duty and his return at the centre of Cardiff’s defence has coincided with the team looking more resolute.

Not that anyone should be getting too carried away with a 0-0 draw against a pretty ordinary Huddersfield outfit.

This was a dour struggle, one Cardiff just about edged in terms of having the better chances.

Terriers goalkeeper Alex Smithies denied Eoin Doyle with a wonder stop on the half-hour, adjusting his body in mid-air to tip over the Cardiff striker’s header.

Slade also believes Huddersfield’s Tommy Smith was lucky not to be sent off in first-half injury time for a foul on Kenwyne Jones, brought down on the edge of the box following a swift counter by the Bluebirds.

Magic moments
Other than those incidents, though, there wasn’t too much for people to enthuse about from this one, apart from a few moments of magic from young winger Matt Kennedy.

Referee Mark Heywood decided against showing red to Smith because he believed Jones did not have control of the ball.

“It was unfortunate and we were denied a goalscoring chance,” maintained Slade. “If we had been the home team it might have been different.”

While Slade clearly believed that Huddersfield should have been down to 10 men for the second half, home manager Chris Powell had exactly the opposite view.

“The referee was spot on - and I would have said the same had the incident been at the other end,” he said. “Cardiff’s player did not have the ball under control. It may have been in a dangerous area, but yellow was the right decision.

“The referee thought carefully before he made the decision and, in my view, got it right.”

As for what may be in store, Slade maintained: “The goals aren’t coming for us, but if we keep playing the way we are then the wins will come.

“I was positive going into this match and I’m positive before the Wigan match. We are making progress.”

If so, that progress is painstakingly slow and rather painful to watch.

Which brings us back around to Wigan. Victory up there and Cardiff will move to the 41 points mark, the same tally as Leeds United who are in 11th place in the table.

Fears
Another bore draw, and those nagging fears Cardiff could be dragged into a relegation fight will grow.

Defeat to Mackay’s men and lots will begin looking over their shoulders down towards Millwall in 22nd spot.

Wigan manager Malky Mackay insists he has nothing to prove as he prepares to come up against his former club Cardiff.
The Scot has not faced the Bluebirds since being controversially sacked by their owner Vincent Tan in December 2013 following a long bitter feud between the pair.
Mackay's current side host Cardiff at the DW Stadium on Tuesday night and he has stressed he is fully focused on Wigan's fight to stay in the Sky Bet Championship, rather than trying to get one over on the club he guided to a League Cup final and promotion to the Barclays Premier League.
