' SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY '

A new-look Sheffield Wednesday squad will look to return to winning ways this Saturday when they host Cardiff City at Hillsborough.

Three Championship games without a win dealt a blow to Wednesday's surprise playoff bid, and forced the club to recruit four new players on transfer deadline day.

Sergiu Bus, Marnick Vermijl, Lewis McGugan and Melo all arrived on Monday as the club's new owner Dejphon Chansiri looks to hand a potentially vital boost to Stuart Gray's side.

All four players are likely to be involved on Saturday, but Gray will probably keep faith with the majority of players who have led his team to 10th in the table after 28 games.

Jose Semedo is Sheffield Wednesday’s major injury concern ahead of Saturday’s clash with Cardiff City at Hillsborough.

Sheff Wed lost their last game 2 nil to Reading

Lewis McGugan could start after returning to the club on loan.
Fellow new boys Sergiu Bus, Marnick Vermijl and Melo may have to wait for their debuts though.
Will Keane is set to lead the line, but has competition for his spot.

Sheffield Wednesday sign 4 players Bus, McGugan, Vermijl & Melo on transfer dead line day.

Sheffield Wednesday have signed CSKA Sofia striker Sergiu Bus and Manchester United defender Marnick Vermijl for undisclosed fees and re-signed Watford midfielder Lewis McGugan on loan.

Key facts

Club: Sheffield Wednesday FC | Opening: 1899 | Capacity: 39,732 seats

History and description

Sheffield Wednesday moved to Hillsborough Stadium in 1899. They played their first match at their new ground on the 2nd of September 1899 against Chesterfield (5-1). At that time, the stadium was still called Owlerton Stadium.

The stadium underwent a series of developments in 1913, including the construction of a new main stand and expansions of the terraces. At completion of the works in 1914, the stadium got renamed Hillsborough.

Hillsborough achieved its record attendance in 1934 when 72,841 people attended an FA Cup match between Wednesday and Manchester City.

In the early 1960s, a new North Stand was built, the second in England with a cantilever roof. In subsequent years further improvements were made to the Leppings Lane End and North West Corner.

Hillsborough was selected as one of the playing venues of the 1966 World Cup, during which it hosted three group matches and the quarter-final between West Germany and Uruguay (4-0).

Few changes were made to the stadium in the following decades, and its state slowly deteriorated. The only noticeable change was the construction of a roof over the Kop in 1986.

In 1989, the stadium was the scene of a stadium disaster that cost the lives of 96 Liverpool fans. The fans died in a crush caused by a combination of poor crowd management, police control, and, to a lesser extent, inadequate safety measures.

The subsequent investigation into the causes of the disaster, chaired by Lord Justice Taylor, resulted in the Taylor report. Its recommendations led to, among others, the conversion of all English stadiums into all-seaters and the removal of perimeter fences.

In the early 1990s, Hillsborough too got converted into an all-seater, and in 1996 it was one of the playing venues during the Euro 1996 tournament. The stadium hosted three group matches.

Sheffield Wednesday sign Bus, McGugan and Man Utd's Vermijl

Sheffield Wednesday have signed CSKA Sofia striker Sergiu Bus and Manchester United defender Marnick Vermijl for undisclosed fees and re-signed Watford midfielder Lewis McGugan on loan.

Bus and Vermijl have signed three-and-a-half-year deals, while McGugan will stay until the end of the season.

Bus, 22, has played six games for his Romania's Under-21 team and scored 10 goals in 19 games this season.

Vermijl, 23, made one appearance for Manchester United this season.

The Belgium Under-21 international played the full 90 minutes of the Old Trafford side's 4-0 defeat by MK Dons in the League Cup.

The transfer of Bus, who has also had loan spells at four other Romanian sides, is subject to international clearance.
McGugan, 26, made seven appearances during a loan at Hillsborough earlier in the season.
Meanwhile, Wednesday's Slovenian defender Dejan Kelhar has signed a deal to stay at Hillsborough until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old joined arrived on a short-term contract in August after leaving Red Star Belgrade in the summer.
He ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament soon after joining Wednesday and has yet to play for the club.
Kelhar has six international caps and has also played for Turkish side Samsunspor and Cercle Bruges in Belgium.

Cardiff City want to win for Russell Slade - Peter Whittingham

BBC

Tues 3rd Feb 2015

Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham says the players want to win for manager Russell Slade after a recent run of poor form.

The Bluebirds are 13th in the Championship, seven points above the bottom three and 13 adrift of the play-off places.

They have lost their last three league games and Whittingham says the squad are determined to get back to winning ways away to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, 7 February.

"He's a good guy to have in charge and hopefully we can repay him with a few wins," said Whittingham.

2-0 Sheff Weds. They have new owners & brought in 3/4 new players.

We may have brought in Doyle and a couple of youngsters but where is the creativity going to come from? We seem to rely on grabbing set piece goals but not much from open play. With our poor form a likely defeat but lets hope one day our fortunes change!

Owls head coach Stuart Gray is hoping midfielder Jose Semedo will be available for selection this weekend.

The 30-year-old was absent for the Owls’ 2-0 defeat at Reading last time out.

Semedo has been an integral part of Wednesday’s squad this season and has made 26 appearances in the engine room.

Wednesday are back at Hillsborough to face Cardiff on Saturday (3.00pm) and Gray said:

“It was frustrating for us and Semi on Saturday because we had prepared for the game and then had to change things around.

“Semi couldn’t even get his trainer on Saturday morning as his toe had swollen up that badly. He was in a lot of pain.

Re: LATEST NEWS ' SHEFF WEDNESDAY v CARDIFF CITY ' Updated D

Wed Feb 04, 2015 11:40 pm

Jose Semedo is Sheffield Wednesday’s major injury concern ahead of Saturday’s clash with Cardiff City at Hillsborough.

The Portuguese player was a notable absentee from the Owls side who slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Reading last week. The 30-year-old withdrew from the Championship tussle at 10am on Saturday due to a toe infection.

Semedo is currently taking medication for the problem and took no part in training yesterday, which was staged at Hillsborough due to Wednesday’s pitches at their Middlewood Road training ground being frozen.

Stuart Gray, the Owls head coach, hopes Semedo will be available for selection to face the Bluebirds as they look to halt a three-match winless run.

Re: LATEST NEWS ' SHEFF WEDNESDAY v CARDIFF CITY ' Updated D

Thu Feb 05, 2015 2:43 pm

With new arrivals in the building, Owls head coach Stuart Gray has plenty of options for the clash with Cardiff on Saturday.

Thurs 5th Feb 2015

One of those is new Owls striker Sergiu Bus, who has been in outstanding form for former club CSKA Sofia.

With ten goals in 19 appearances for CSKA, Gray is hopeful the 22-year-old will hit the ground running.

The Romanian is eligible to feature against the Bluebirds and Gray said:

“We want Sergiu to come in and hit the ground running but it might be a case of bedding him in at first and giving him a little taste here and there.

“It’s a decision for me to mull over at the moment and I will evaluate how he does in training.

“He’s not played a competitive game since December and they shut down for the winter break in Bulgaria.

“The British game is so unique and that’s why it is loved worldwide. We are probably the only country who don’t have a winter break.”

Bus joined the squad for his first training session on Tuesday morning at Hillsborough, action of which can be viewed below on the Owls’ YouTube channel.

Gray continued: “It’s full on so Sergiu has to get up to the tempo of training and matches.”
