Cardiff City make bid for Rotherham striker Alex Revell

Former Leyton Orient front man Revell has scored 34 goals in 170 appearances for Cardiff's Championship rivals Rotherham

Russell Slade's latest target has been identified with the news Cardiff City have made a bid for Rotherham striker Alex Revell.

The 31-year-old has played a big part in the Millers’ recent rise from League Two to the Championship and is well known to Slade having played under him at Brighton and Leyton Orient previously.

Slade also looked on as Revell scored two goals in the last season’s League One play-off final to help Rotherham, who he joined in 2011, earn promotion over Orient.

In total, Revell, who stands at 6ft 3ins, has scored 34 goals in 170 appearances during his time with the Millers and has been a favourite of manager Steve Evans.

But this term in the Championship the marksman has come under fire from fans for his lack of goals having netted just four times in 26 appearances. He played the whole match as Slade’s Bluebirds fought out a 0-0 draw with Rotherham in the Welsh capital last month.

Revell is out of contract at Rotherham in the summer and it is believed talks over a new deal have stalled with Slade now keen to step in and take advantage of the situation.

Revell missed the Millers’ devastating 5-1 FA Cup defeat at the hands of Bournemouth last weekend reportedly with a chest infection and that was the first time in 121 games he has not been included in the Rotherham match-day squad, a run going back to October 2012.

Preston, Barnsley and Sheffield United have also been linked with a move for Revell who has been well travelled in his career so far.

He began his career after coming through the youth ranks at Cambridge United before joining Braintree, Brighton and then Southend. As well as Orient and Rotherham, Revell has had loan spells at Kettering, Swindon and Wycombe.

Confirms City's lack of ambition.

4 clubs are interested /after Revell. That is Cardiff and three Division 1 clubs. Says it all really. If he was that good would any other Championship/Premiership club look at him? No, just us.

Out of contract in the summer so another free/cheap deal.

No hes not but forget javi guerra he is on his way out because we need to cut the wage bill. But he is not better than kenwynne le fondre or maynard.
Kenwynne would be his main rival as they are both target man type strikers and kenwynne is easily better than him and stats also prove this so really what is the point

Totally underwhelmed by the players Slade is targeting, probably getting ready for Div 1 football next season!!! :bluescarf:

Kenwynne is on premier league wages, so this guy will be a cheaper replacement as his wages will be nowhere near Jones. Agree with everyone else, why are we signing someone of this stature, who is hardly a player for the future. We need a hard working midfield player not more forwards.

I think it is more like looking to bring players who want to play for shirt and will have a good work ethic. This is what he did with Yeovil and orient. Shoestring budget, but players who would stand up the shirt they played in. Uninspiring absolutely, but it' will get fans going, 1 crunching tackle a never give up attitude, like it loathe it fans do but into it.

my faith in slade is slipping with potential signings like this.

if he was young and playing out of his skin, he might be worth a look, but a 31 year old with a 1 in 5 strike rate? whats going on?

I don't get this.....

We had a team of expensive "premier league" types who bottled it in the championship. They didn't play for Ole, never played for Slade, so get players who will. We are a championship club, when we are a premier club, buy premier league players....

We were by far the worse team in the premier league, as we stopped playing as a team when malky left, although the wheels were falling off anyway.

Charlie Austin was a league 1/championship player
Sam Vokes was a championship/league 1 striker
Danny Ings was a championship / league 1 striker

We get him for peanuts, he can do a better job than macheda and maynard. Jones will be gone next season whatever happens.

Revell is out of contract in the Summer, so the same as Malone, won't cost a lot of money to acquire him and with KJ also off to the Africa Cup of Nations, he'll give us the option of a big target man, at least until KJ returns!

He will be in cardiff for talks over a 175k transfer tomorrow

Interesting that weve had a few former rotherham strikers over the years . Fortune West, Le Fondre, Ronnie Moore, Alan Lee . They have all come here and done pretty well to be fair .

He did, and he's a bloody hard worker. However, he is limited in terms of skill and pace, apart from his goal of the season in last years play-off final.

He is very physical and gave our centre half a a hard time 3 weeks ago. A good alternative to Kenwyne 20 minutes

So that's 30 goals in 144 lower league matches for Rotherham..?

Can't be compared with the likes of Charlie Austin, Danny Ings etc.

Would be a shit, uninspiring signing.

Maybe it's an attempt to balance the books to convert debt to equity??

Then tan has fulfilled his rebrand promises.

What a baffling choice? 31? Not a great record? Guerra scored half this guys career goals in one season at la liga! Very uninspiring.

spending money is not guarantee of success, but spending no money is a guarantee of failure (with few exceptions).
