Slade's men were 1-0 down inside the first minute and never recovered, eventually conceding five on the day


Bluebirds boss Russell Slade criticised his sides defending after they shipped five goals in a dismal display against Bournemouth.

Captain David Marshall had kept three clean sheets in their previous four Championship matches, but crashed to defeat against hosts who are now unbeaten in 12 matches.

City conceded after only 38 seconds at Dean Court and Slade admitted: “You can’t win if you don’t defend properly.”

“The most disappointing factor is that we were one goal down within a minute.

“It’s difficult enough to go a goal down away without conceding that early against a team who are heading to the top of the table.

“Credit to my players because they never gave up, but you can’t win if you don’t defend properly. We didn’t close Bournemouth down well enough.

“We were back in the match at 2-1 and shot ourselves in the football when they scored a third. We were back in it again at 3-2 and had a real chance, but, again, Bournemouth produced their fourth goal.

“We need to start games as we started the second half. That’s the contrast. We were 2-0 down, but managed to grind ourselves back into the game. We got back to 3-2 and thought it was game on, but we needed that next goal.


“It was an open game and at that stage highly unpredictable.

“We were pushing on trying to score our fourth goal when they broke and made it 5-3. Bournemouth have threat and pace up front. We were pushing for fourth and that left us open at the back.

“Having scored three goals away it’s disappointing to have nothing to show for that We played against an extremely good side, but we go home bitterly disappointed with goals we conceded and how we conceded.

“The key is to learn from this. This is a team who might win promotion to the Premier League and we have to learn and progress to that level. At times we were behind Bournemouth and it gives me an idea exactly where we are.”

Slade sent Kadeem Harris on for the out-of-form Kim Bo-kyung after half-time and said: “Kadeem worked hard. He is young, ambitious and keen, while he has pace and I felt we needed that.

“He is direct in the way he plays and did what I asked of him.”


“Eddie Howe has done a wonderful job at Bournemouth,” said Slade. “They have a group who know each other well.

“When I came to Cardiff we were coming from a long way off. We recovered to a certain extent, but must show greater consistency.

“We have two home matches before the new year, against Brentford on Saturday and then Watford, plus a match at Charlton on Boxing Day.

”It’s all about how we react to this result against Bournemouth.”

Home manager Howe was feeling unwell and sent assistant Jason Tindall into the post-match press conference.

“We are delighted to score five goals and it was a terrific performance,” said Tindall. “It’s great to be top at this stage of the season. The aim now is to try and build on that and increase our lead.

“We knew Derby had lost at the start of our match against Cardiff and that a two goal win could take us top. We didn’t expect it to be 5-3.

“Cardiff were always going to be a threat and dangerous from set plays. But we pride ourselves on our attacking and it was great to see goals from five different scorers.

“That shows how much quality we have in our team.”

Just so frustrating that what seems so obvious to so many of us ordinary fans can't be seen by the manager and his highly qualified coaching staff.

I have learned that I was right in thinking Slade is out of his depth.Play the players in their right positions and blue kit and play the players who have creativity. TAN IS A CLOWN.

Poor team selection by poor management and coaches. It's always the same team!!

We didn't close down under ole but we seemed to address this once slade took charge. Yet this didn't last and now we've gone back to not pressing. Slade talks about learning lessons yet clearly can't see even the basics. I'd love to know what we work on in training with our illustrious coaching team as we seem to be getting worse game by game.

In my opinion the first lesson that has to be learned here is for RS himself because he has been talking for weeks about getting ourselves into a top 6 position by Christmas, 5 points behind 6th place with 2 games to go makes that an extremely difficult task. Concentrate on a game by game basis and try and win every game rather than setting "Targets" which when we fail to achieve is more likely, in my opinion, to demotivate our players than losing a single game.

Perhaps RS should concentrate on why HIS team and tactics are resulting in unbelieveable possession stats of just 44.1% on average since you took over control. OGS was averaging 48.88% during his games in charge this season and he was shown the door.

With 30 points after 21 games we are in exactly the same position as Reading were in the 2012/12 season, the ONLY team in 10 years to win automatic promotion from sych a lowly position, how many of us truely believe RS has it in him to achieve the same a BM did with Reading that season.

The next 7 games are a real challenge for us and in many ways will define our season in my opinion, continue in the same vein of inviting our opponents on and giving them the freedom to shoot at goal without the slightest attempt at blocking the effort does not bode well with me. Season could well be over by 31st January next year and I wonder how that will affect ST sales for next season as surely the club will be hoping to put them on sale around that time.

Perhaps the biggest question he is "Can you teach an old dog like RS new tricks" because on what we have seen so far he doesn't seem to have many in his locker.

For the managers job, Vincent Tan needed to buy an Audi but he bought a second hand Fiat instead.

Whitts must stay but Fabio has won me over and watching connolly yesterday we were crying out for Fabio.

Yes - we are lacking that type of player - eg Jordon Mutch - but there is room for that type of player plus Whitts - whose free kicks, corners, assists and goals are vital to us. Your suggestion is like asking whether Silva of Man City could do YaYa Toure's role in the Man City team - and again the answer would be no - but both play vital, different roles for their team - to make the most of their particular skills. That's my honest opinion.

Last week, I thought the penny had dropped when Slade took Connolly off and reverted Brayford to RB where he is totally comfortable and was playing full of confidence & Fabio back at LB giving the side a bit of balance.
But no, Russell sticks to plan A, the key to learning is 'if you change nothing" you shouldn't expect much in the way of an improvement!
Also, maybe he should learn that if we all know our likely team & formation, you can be damned sure the opposition do.
Eddie Howe was probably wetting himself at the prospect of setting his team up to play us?

Well we need a defensive midfielder in this team who likes a tackle and thats gunnarson at the moment, and yes you said it we need a mutch type player..

Fabio at left back, whitts as left midfield.

Gunnar,Ademyemi in the middle

Noone or Harris right with Brayford as right back.

But after that most of their replacements will be gone.

I would start with both.

Manager Russell Slade was not a happy man at full time in our five three defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend.

With David Marshall and the defence keeping three clean sheets in our last four games a defensive capitulation like that wasn't on the cards, and having conceded after less than a minute, Slade told Wales Online that it simply wasn't good enough and he had let the players know it at full time.

'You can't win if you don't defend properly. The most disappointing factor is that we were one goal down within a minute. Slade says all we can do is learn from this, take it on to the training ground and ensure that we improve further from it, but given some of our passages of play it was eye opening for him and he feels he knows where we are in the league and what we need to do to kick on, so despite the disappointment there are things he can take from it.

We need a high energy box to box midfielder who has urgency and can drive forward attacks and dribble with the ball from midfield, whitts is no way that type of player!
Mugsy can you answer me these two questions honestly?

1. Are we lacking the type of midfielder i described in our side?

2. Does whitts have them attributes and can he do that job?

Yes - we are lacking that type of player - eg Jordon Mutch - but there is room for that type of player plus Whitts - whose free kicks, corners, assists and goals are vital to us. Your suggestion is like asking whether Silva of Man City could do YaYa Toure's role in the Man City team - and again the answer would be no - but both play vital, different roles for their team - to make the most of their particular skills. That's my honest opinion.

Well we need a defensive midfielder in this team who likes a tackle and thats gunnarson at the moment, and yes you said it we need a mutch type player..

so if say mutch was here who would you start mugsy out of whitts and mutch???

I would start with both.

You couldnt though could you because you would have to cater for a defensive midfielder a ball winning midfielder who sits more, if you started with both whitts and mutch opposition would have a field day dont you see that?so you would have to choose one or the other surely?
