Malky Mackay deserves a fair hearing at job interview, claims Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan

Offer: Wigan chairman Dave Whelan says he feels obliged to give Malky Mackay a chance to prove he is a reformed character at Wigan.

By John Percy
Malky Mackay has applied for the vacant managerial position at Wigan Athletic and is set to be interviewed by chairman Dave Whelan.

Mackay is rivalling Chris Hughton to succeed Uwe Rosler at the Championship strugglers, with Whelan confirming he is under consideration despite the Football Association’s ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct.

The former Cardiff manager was reported to the FA and accused of sending racist, sexist and homophobic messages during his time in charge at the Welsh club, along with former head of recruitment Iain Moody.
Mackay, 42, had promised to clear his name and reputation shortly after the allegations and is determined to make a return to management. He was dismissed by Cardiff in December and his hopes of landing the Crystal Palace post were wrecked when the allegations first surfaced in August.
But on Tuesday night Whelan revealed Mackay has formally applied for the job and could be interviewed in the next few days with Hughton, the former Norwich manager, and Paul Jewell believed to be other contenders.

Telegraph Sport understands Wigan are aware of a potential backlash if they appoint Mackay, following the text scandal, and are conducting their own investigation into the background of the Scot’s row with Cardiff chairman Vincent Tan.

Whelan said: “I can confirm Malky Mackay has applied and we will speak to him. I believe he deserves a fair hearing.
“We’ve had over 20 applications and started interviews on Tuesday. Hopefully we can make an appointment before the game this weekend against Middlesbrough.
“It’s an important job and I don’t like to mess around when I think I’ve got the right person.”
Hughton, sacked by Norwich in April, is also in the running while Jewell is emerging as a possible candidate. Jewell remains highly regarded by Whelan after guiding the club from League One to the Premier League.

Keith Hill, the Rochdale manager, is understood to also figure in Wigan’s thinking.

Wigan are currently in the Championship relegation zone after recording only three victories all season. Rosler was dismissed last week after less than 12 months in charge.

Why shouldn't he have a second chance. Did he kill anyone ? Did he rape anyone ? No but many still think that words are far worse a crime than an actual violent assault. Crazy if you ask me.

Agree, he didn't threaten to throw acid in anyone's face did he? He hasn't been convicted of rape either.
A few private texts ffs.
Don't think he'll get the job but, personally, I hope he does.

Personally, I can't tolerate Racism at any level and anyone who thinks it's OK for a man in his profession to text the stuff he did whilst in charge of footballers of different races whether privately or not need to look hard at themselves. We all come across many people who make racist comments or jokes claiming they have many black friends or their family originally came from outside of the UK so they cannot possibly be a racist but like it or not they are racist and whilst there won't be as much of a backlash against Malky getting a job in football as Ched Evans has had, if I was a father of a black kid I wouldn't want him anywhere near a club managed by Malky Mackay

Everyone deserves a second chance, but people in leading positions might not get it at the highest level. How does Wigan´s squad look like? Any dog eaters? Any niggers? Any whores?

Ouch, sorry my language (and I hope you got the irony). Basically, I think it´s too early for Malky. He might be a good manager and deepest inside a nice man, but is Wigan really ready for the potential fuzz such an employment may cause?

As I've said before, good luck to the guy if anyone will give him a chance, as I'm sure he will do a job (maybe more so now he thinks he has a point to prove)

Still think (in retrospect) it was right to sack him at the CCS, but he's gone, we've moved on (not necessarily for the better) and it's Wigan/Whelan's decision to make not ours!

No big welcome back to the CCS from me, but no malice either because as much as he spoilt it for himself, he also provided us with Premier League football for the first time!

Mackay to be interviewed for vacant Wigan role

Fourfourtwo

19th Nov 2014

Malky Mackay is set to be interviewed for the vacant managerial position at Championship strugglers Wigan Athletic.
The Scot has been out of work since being dismissed by Cardiff City last December, amid a much-publicised falling out with the club's owner Vincent Tan.

Mackay was thought to be on the verge of replacing Tony Pulis at Crystal Palace in August, but he was subsequently reported to the Football Association over claims he exchanged inappropriate text messages with Cardiff's then head of recruitment Iain Moody, which were allegedly of a racist and sexist nature.
However, the 42-year-old has since vowed to clear his name and make a return to football management, and his opportunity could come at Wigan, who sacked Uwe Rosler last week with the club languishing in 22nd position after 17 matches.

"I can confirm Malky Mackay has applied and we will speak to him. I believe he deserves a fair hearing," Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is quoted as saying by The Telegraph.
"We've had over 20 applications and started interviews on Tuesday. Hopefully we can make an appointment before the game this weekend against Middlesbrough.
"It's an important job and I don't like to mess around when I think I've got the right person."

Chris Hughton, sacked by Norwich City in April, has also been linked with the club, as has former Wigan boss Paul Jewell, who led the club to the Premier League in the 2004-05 season.

Rochdale manager Keith Hill has also been touted.

It seems like the positive Malky PR campaign is kicking in, I just heard Colin Caldwell singing his praises and stating that "he is a real stand up guy" who he would have no problem with as manager of Wigan, so I'm sure he has one foot in the job

Malky Mackay: Scottish manager to get interview for Wigan Athletic job despite FA investigation

Mackay still under investigation after being accused of sending racist, sexist and homophobic text messages while manager of Cardiff City
TOM SHEEN Wednesday 19 November 2014

Malky Mackay has applied for the vacant job at Wigan Athletic and will be given an interview, said club chairman Dave Whelan.

After Uwe Rosler was sacked last week, Whelan said Mackay will be given a "fair hearing" for a run at the job, despite the ongoing investigation into alleged racist, sexist and homophobic messages while Mackay was manager of Cardiff City.

Mackay, who was close to landing the Crystal Palace job before the allegations emerged, is thought to be in the running for the job with Chris Hughton and Paul Jewell, among others.

"I can confirm Malky Mackay has applied and we will speak to him. I believe he deserves a fair hearing," said Whelan. Dave Whelan Dave Whelan said Mackay deserves a 'fair hearing'

"We’ve had over 20 applications and started interviews on Tuesday. Hopefully we can make an appointment before the game this weekend against Middlesbrough.

"It’s an important job and I don’t like to mess around when I think I’ve got the right person."

Wigan are currently 17th in the Championship table with 16 points from 11 matches.

Former manager Rosler told Wigan Today: "I’m not bitter, not at all. The club and the town will always have a special place in my heart.

"To leave a club on good terms is not normal in football, but there is mutual respect there and I genuinely wish everyone at Wigan all the best for the future.

"I have taken blows before and I always come back fighting and stronger."

this comes as no surprise to me. i did say on an earlier thread i thought whelan as a football man, would view the situation in context and give him the job on the basis he is an excellent championship manager.

there is no issue of competence, just the thorny racism / homophobia / misogyny issue. another fake apology should do the trick.

Concerns are voiced as Malky Mackay set to interview for Wigan job
The FA are still investigating a dossier of messages involving Mackay and Cardiff’s former head of recruitment Iain Moody

Wed, Nov 19, 2014

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has revealed he will interview Malky Mackay for his club’s managerial vacancy despite the furore which followed his departure from Cardiff.
Latics, who are in the Sky Bet Championship’s bottom three just 18 months on from their famous FA Cup win, are currently talking to potential candidates about the post after sacking Uwe Rosler last Thursday.
Mackay was immediately installed as the favourite to take the reins having been out of the sport since he was dismissed by Cardiff in December 2013.
The Scot came close to taking over at Crystal Palace in August, only to see that possibility dashed when details emerged of text messages, sent by Mackay, which he later admitted were “disrespectful of other cultures”.
However, Whelan could be willing to offer Mackay a route back into the game as he promised to grant him an audience this week.
“I can confirm Malky Mackay has applied and we will speak to him,” Whelan told the Daily Telegraph. “I believe he deserves a fair hearing.
“We’ve had over 20 applications and started interviews on Tuesday. Hopefully we can make an appointment before the game this weekend against Middlesbrough.
“It’s an important job and I don’t like to mess around when I think I’ve got the right person.”
‘Respect for diversity’
Last week, news of Mackay’s potential employment prompted Wigan MP Lisa Nandy to write a letter to Whelan which expressed her concerns over the Scot’s link to the position.
In that open letter, which she subsequently uploaded to her Twitter account, the Labour MP said: “I have been contacted by a number of constituents and Wigan Athletic supporters who have asked me to voice their concern in response to press reports suggesting the potential appointment of Malky Mackay as manager of Wigan Athletic.
“A number of constituents have pointed out that a football manager has a crucial position in the community and is a role model, especially for young people.
“Having worked with Wigan Athletic and your excellent Community Trust over the last four years, I am certain you share my view that respect for the diversity and tolerance that characterises Wigan is one of the finest features of the club.
“Whoever is appointed will be an ambassador for this town and based on the work your club has done to tackle discrimination over the years, I am confident you would seek to ensure that they share these values.”
The FA confirmed in August it was investigating the dossier of messages involving Mackay and Cardiff’s former head of recruitment Iain Moody, but there have yet to be any sanctions brought against either man.

Mackay is in charge of the illuminati and creating the new world order. Along with Jay-z and Bieber.

That is why he bought A-corn.

He bought Noone, Mutch Gunnarsson, Brayford and others that we use now for the fun of it.

Malky has found himself an ideal owner in Dave Whelan. Wasn't he the knob who tried to use his influence with the FA to call for a mandatory minutes silence at all football grounds after the death of Margaret Thatcher? :o
