Have to wonder how much longer this airport can remain open. Used to fly from Cardiff at every opportunity years back, but now can only fly from Bristol or Gatwick to my usual destination. Have'nt been able to use Cardiff for probably the best part of 10 years.

Maybe they are but having read the report it clearly states wings and several other airlines are in discussions to operate next summer! After all it had increase in passengers on the route, don't you just love slightly bent reporting of facts!

Its YOU who hasn't read the report properly: A spokesman for the company was asked if Germanwings was stopping flights from Cardiff in 2015 and said: “Yes, we can confirm this information.”

The Cardiff Airport go on the defensive and say “The Dusseldorf - Cardiff route has operated successfully over the past two years as a summer only service focussed on bringing German visitors to Wales.

“During the past two years we have worked with Visit Wales to promote Wales as an attractive market to German originating tourism. There has been good success with passenger traffic between Germany and Wales increasing by 43% on the same period last year, with over 8000 German visitors flying to Cardiff during this period. Not only did passengers using the Dusseldorf – Cardiff route increase by 20%, in addition our KLM services which connect to 10 German airports have also seen a significant uplift as a result of the activity.

“The reports circulating today regarding the service for next year are misleading as we are in discussions with a number of airlines – including Germanwings, regarding continuing the development of services linking Wales to Germany for 2015 and beyond, which includes the Dusseldorf route. This is in line with good commercial practice.”

The bottom line is that the Airport can discuss as much as they want but the airport doesn't want to fly in and out of here anymore. Wake up and smell the coffee Alan

You beat me to it

The original post is political spin at it's worst. Even if the airport isn't successful in attracting a replacement/renewal of this route it is still not a net loss as it was the current management that attracted it in the first place

Given that it was clear this was a "summer only" flight what do you expect now we are in November

Bottom line is that the airport was withering on the vine under the previous ownership, do you really think that the Welsh Assembly should have just let that happen ? Not exactly a great way to attract inward investement is it ? Whilst is may cost us money I'd rather the Welsh Assembly subsidise the airport, within reason, than leave foreign businessmen/tourists no way of flying to our wonderful country.

Cant you read 'No longer doing it in 2015!!!', that means Germanwings are gone whatever month of the year it currently is. The previous owners were shite but the records show that more airlines are walking away since the WAG brought it then are working with them.

Good commercial practice indeed and I wish Cardiff Wales Airport every success, as it is a great asset to Business Wales and I know lots of local folk who work bloody hard there under testing conditions!

Sadly, unlike Adam, who appears to want to be proven right at all costs, including the detriment of the workforce!

Nothing was mentioned on this forum when Ryanair made the return to Cardiff Airport, same with Cityjet, same with Vueling.

It is a massive shame that some people have no intentions of helping to promote existing routes and services, but instead waiting for routes to fail, to then criticise the airport.

Maybe if people helped to promote our airport, instead of waiting for routes to fail, then maybe it would not be as bad as it is now.

To put it in context

This was a once a week summer service on a 70 seater regional jet.

Germanwings are owned by Lufthansa who are struggling financially at the moment and are restructuring many other routes.

Hardly the end of the world.

The voice of reason - a once a week flight which is dependant on holiday makers spending a week in Wales. What is needed is a greater choice of destinations, a greater frequency at a reasonable price - but then that's what everyone has been calling out for - I think it's called a low cost airline

It would help if people got behind the Airport and the Assembly rather than take every opportunity to run them down

I've got a good idea....let's return the airport to private owners....after all it was doing so f*cking well wasn't it?? Not so long ago it had over 2 million passengers a year but the last owners managed to get that figure down to less than 1 million. That was really useful for south Wales wasn't it?? Give it a f*cking rest FFS. :sleepy2:

I've got a better idea, let's go for what the Independant advisors suggested weeks before the WAG brought Cardiff Airport and that's start again and merge Cardiff with Bristol and make a Sevenside Airport which can rival Birmingham and Manchester. Now that's where our taxes should be going too. Please remember that our taxes also paid for the Independant advisors to come up with that study only for it to be thrown back in their faces just days after making their investigation public

I've flown away to work every month since Aug last year and I've departed Cardiff once and landed there three times. I use Birmingham mostly, train from central between £25-£60, or Bristol occasionally, £6.50 greyhound bus journey. Cardiff airport is too expensive and at present can't compete with B'ham or Bristol. Obviously it'll never compete with Heathrow which is only a £40 bus ride away but it has to do something.

any airport experts here? whats the key to a successful airport?

Re: Another airline is stopping its service from Cardiff Air

A good geographical location attached to a large and Prosperous catchment area.

Cardiff has neither and Bristol has both hence the disparity in both airports fortunes.

and an airport who doesn't charge airline a fortune in land fees compared to their competition who charge f**k all.

total myth bit like everyone being at that Rochdale game on a wet Tuesday evening.

Both airports landing fees are roughly comparable .... If you look hard enough they are published on both airports websites .

Can we put this ridiculous myth to bed now ?

If it was true....

Re: Another airline is stopping its service from Cardiff Air

Mon Nov 17, 2014 1:22 pm

I don't profess to know a lot about airports but the one thing we have in our favour, over Bristol, is the WAG.

If the WAG wanted to it could "arrange" for the size of the runway to be increased and also "arrange" for free/cheaper runway fees for the airlines.

The result would be more flights into South Wales. Benefits to the communities in both West and South Wales and economic improvements as well.

Re: Another airline is stopping its service from Cardiff Air

Mon Nov 17, 2014 1:23 pm

It was true at the time Bristol expanded big time and that attracted the interest in the first place. Once the airlines were happy there then the landing fees come up to a more realistic level. Like many other industries I suppose, like your first 3 years free for example

Paul, correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the runway already long enough to take 747 (Jumbo) Jets??

Last time I spoke to anyone from there, I was told that the big issue was (as you say) the relatively extortionate Landing Fees for airlines landing this side of the Channel versus the Brrrsol side

That may have changed under WAG??
