Euro 2016: Wales now focused on Cyprus, says Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale says Wales' draw against Bosnia-Hercegovina will give the side confidence for Monday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Cyprus.
Wales fought out a goalless draw with Bosnia to maintain their unbeaten start in Group B.

Chris Coleman's side host Cyprus in Cardiff and Real Madrid forward Bale is targeting victory.

"We go into Cyprus full of confidence but knowing we need to focus and concentrate," Bale said.
"We need to get the three points.
"Hopefully we can get another big crowd here on Monday and do them proud and get three points."
Chances were rare for both sides during a tight first half but the match burst into life after the interval with chances at both ends.
Wayne Hennessey made excellent saves to thwart Miralem Pjanic and Edin Dzeko while Bale forced two fine saves from Asmir Begovic - including one in injury time.
Captain Ashley Williams and substitute Hal Robson-Kanu both headed wide from corners but Bale said Wales could be happy with a point against a side that reached the 2014 World Cup finals.

"We want to win every game but I think a draw is still a very good result against the top seeds of the group," Bale added.
"I think we showed great character and great spirit.
"We didn't leave a blade of grass unturned. It was a great team performance and unlucky not to take something out of the game."

Wales were cheered on by a crowd of 30,741 - a record attendance for an international fixture at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Bale paid tribute to the Welsh fans and said he hoped for a similar turnout when Cyprus, beaten 2-1 at home by Israel on Friday, visit Cardiff on Monday.
"We feel like we've turned a corner and the fans were absolutely amazing. It was great to have a full house almost and hopefully we've done them proud," Bale said.
"Probably on another night the last 10 minutes is a lot more difficult without a full house and they were unbelievable, true Welsh fans.
"They pushed us over the line and kept us going for the last 10-15 minutes."

Monday 13th Oct 2014

As Wales prepared at Cardiff City Stadium yesterday, the only hint of a complaint was from Jonny Williams after an ankle injury sustained against Bosnia saw his effervescent smile replaced with a glumness that he could not be involved in this game that could maintain Wales’ best start to a qualifying campaign in more than a decade.

Yet it says much that the midfielder remained a part of the squad, wanting to be involved, wanting to be a part of things after Friday night signalled – in terms of result, performance and atmosphere – that a significant point has been reached in the development of this crop of players as an international team.

For years there has been a nagging wonder, in some cases and not all, whether players pulled on a red shirt as much out of duty and obligation.

Perhaps pride shouldn’t have been called into doubt, but now there is an unmistakable feel that these group are also here because they want to achieve – and they sense it is possible.

Again there have been injuries and withdrawals, but at the team’s St David’s Hotel the players were more concerned with making sure they were right for this game rather than worrying whether a niggle or a knock would affect their chances of playing for their club next weekend, Gareth Bale very much included.

The backroom team and the high-tech trappings expected by Premier League players are on another level again to when Toshack wondered whether such “luxuries” had created a generation of pampered professionals, but they have helped build an atmosphere within the camp that most successful international teams cite.

Chris Coleman’s side look, speak and play like a club team. This is Wales FC.

“I always come back to Chris Gunter, with his 55 caps,” said Coleman. “When we played Holland in the summer, it was the end of the season and I was told Chris needed a rest.

"There was a slight problem with his groin so I wasn’t going to pick him for Holland. Chris had got wind of that, called me up and says, ‘If you don’t want to put me in the squad because you want to pick someone else, fine.

"But don’t not pick me because you think I’ve got a problem. I’ll be fit, I’ll be ready for the game’. He was and he was brilliant.

“It’s one example, but that’s the attitude which gets you team spirit and trusting each other. That’s a big word in football: trust.”

More and more it’s becoming obvious, sensed and appreciated by a 30,000 crowd on Friday. More and more it is leading to the feeling that this collective can achieve.

“We’ve needed it,” added Coleman. “We know there’s been that finger pointed whether it means enough to be here. I can only speak about my experiences and the way it is now and it does, it means something to them.

"They want to be part of this, a part of what could be something special.”

There is some way to go before there can be substance to such hopes but there is no doubt Wales are heading in the right direction. Victory against Cyprus would place the team on seven points – they had been on six heading into the final two games of the previous campaign – and set belief soaring going to Brussels.

A win would see Wales as group leaders taking on the group favourites.

Of course, those who are familiar with Toshack’s Cypriot comments will be equally wary that Wales have a habit of slipping up just when the going looks good.

Cyprus arrive having just lost to Israel at home, but having shocked Bosnia with a 2-1 win in Zenica last month by frustrating and then flying forward on the counter.

The hope is that Wales are now a different animal. The recovery process has been meticulous – players pictured resting up in imaginative compression boots – and a team psychologist has been on hand for individuals and the group to call upon, framing mindsets in terms of the tactical and the mental.

There is a clear togetherness that shone through Friday’s draw and bodes better for the future than the result in isolation.

And, amid that togetherness, there is leadership. Former captain Kevin Ratcliffe criticised senior players in that Cyprus defeat in 2007, angry that senior stars were not doing enough to guide the inexperienced. One such player that night was an 18-year-old left-back by the name of Bale.

Now aware of the responsibility, not only as an outstanding talent but as a player of 46 caps, it was revealing that it was the Real Madrid man who asked captain Ashley Williams to instigate a post-match huddle at the final whistle against Bosnia.

“We felt like it was a real moment for us,” said Williams. “We could see we were all tired and battered but we had got a point and performed well and in that huddle we wanted to reflect on that. I think it shows how together we are.”

Coleman has several captains who have felt now is the time to deliver after years of being allowed to slowly develop, although he is quick to credit Williams for helping to ensure the side that face Cyprus now are making noises of the right kind.

“It can be on a plate for you in professional football, but Ash has seen real life,” said Coleman, of his part-time status while making the grade. “That’s why his performances are so wholehearted. He relishes every challenge.”

Another one awaits as the opportunity to show this team is different arrives this evening. With victory, Wales can really make waves in this qualifying group. No-one will complain of the noise that makes.
