To me Swansea is a dump. Not been for about 5 years so it may have changed.

1.The market is no better or worse than Cardiff market.
2. As regards Party time in Wind Street. A load of peed up slappers and roiders. Give me a night in over that.
3. The Gower is lovely but is not in Swansea. (Cue Magic Daps).
4. Dylan Thomas-not my cup of tea. Obviously a literary genius but he spent a hell of a lot of time away from Swansea.
5. The football team is better than ours at the moment. Hasn't got our history or fan base but that can soon change.
6.As regards culture Cardiff has CIA, Millenium Stadium, CCS, St Davids Hall, Clwb Ifor Bach, Sherman Theatre, New Theatre plus numerous other bars and the Castle. Not forgetting museum of Welsh Life or our beautiful civic centre.
7.The Great Outdoors-Castle and surrounding area is as nice as Singleton Park.
8. Food and Drink-Brains SA, some fantastic restaurants etc
9.Cardiff Bay with Pier Head and new development is superior to the SA1 development.

The article fails to mention shopping facilities, hotels, transportation and deprivation. I'm sure there would be people who would argue that Newport could be the best city in uk or for that matter Sunderland, Plymouth or Bristol. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. In my opinion the best cities in UK are Newcastle, Edinburgh and Cardiff. The worst are Bristol, Liverpool and Coventry.

Orite Gareth, how u keeping my old pal? The Gower is not "in"swansea, but it certainly is a part of it. I was born and lived there for the first 25yrs of my life so I think I'd know! Being a cardiff fan I'd expect u to discredit anything good about swansea, but c'mon, we've done this one to death, and let's not forget.. I always come out on top! Anyway, u and the family keeping well?

While I would argue that Rhossili is one of the best beaches in the world, it is not in Swansea, in fact it sometimes takes me less time driving to Swansea from Cardiff than from the centre of Swansea to Rhossili. Cardiff is only the same time from the Brecon Beacons, so should they be classed as part of Cardiff's attraction? Similarly, if cockles from Penclawdd are from Swansea, then Caerphilly cheese is from Cardiff. There is very little of attraction in Swansea compared to Cardiff, which is why most of the attractions listed are well outside the city.

Taken from the official City and County of Swansea's website...

Physical DescriptionThe new City and County covers an area of 378 square kilometres (146 square miles), about 2% of the area of Wales.
Extending from Rhossili Down at the western edge of the Gower Peninsula to Kilvey Hill, Crymlyn Bog and the slopes of the Drummau Mountain on the eastern border with Neath Port Talbot; and from Mumbles Head and the sweep of Swansea Bay in the south to the 1200 ft. ridge of Mynydd y Gwair overlooking the Amman Valley in the north, the new City and County covers an area of 378 square kilometres (146 square miles), about 2% of the area of Wales.

The City and County can be broadly divided into 4 physical areas. In the north, the Lliw Uplands present an open moorland feature; the Gower Peninsula in the west, a rural landscape with contrasting coasts and a collection of small villages; the urban and suburban centre stretching from Swansea to Gorseinon and Pontarddulais; and the coastal strip around Swansea Bay, no more than 2 miles in width.

Taken from Martin Caton's (M.P for Gower) website...

Gower is an astonishingly diverse constituency comprising the old fishing village and seaside resort of Mumbles and its invirons to the south of Swansea city centre; the Gower peninsula to its west, the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Britain and to the north-west and north the Lliw Vlley region has a rich industrial history grounded in coal and steel. Some 76,000 people live in Gower and its population gre by 1.7% between 2001 and 2004. These make up around 31,300 households. The Gower Constituency lies entirely within the borders of the City & County of Swansea. It is by far the biggest Parliamentary constituency of the three that make up the local authority and also has the largest electorate (approx 61,700). About 23% of the population is of retirement age.

Aye, it's about Passport Control as you leave Port Talbot heading west...

Our Passports refer to meeting IMMIGRATION rules, so no problem with them coming our way (sadly) ;)

Their Passports refer to meeting IGNORATION rules, so it effectively rules most Cardiff people from entering "the zone" and which is why the M4 curves sharply around the whole place, rather than going through it, as parts of it do in the great capital city of Wales

No offence, but I know where I'd rather live and if all they have is a beach and a temporarily successful football team, then so be it. Not many places in the UK to beat Cardiff, I can tell you! :)

Each to their own, though!

The title was best city in the UK, not City and County. The Gower is part of the County of Swansea and is a rural area, whereas the City of Swansea is an urban area. Therefore, the Gower is not part of the City of Swansea, but part of the County of Swansea and has no relevance when comparing cities.

The geographical, political and administrational area titled "the city and County of Swansea" is all encompassing. You cannot make a distinction between the city of Swansea, and the county of Swansea, because they are one and the same thing. In other words, Rhossili is either within the borders of the city and County of Swansea, or it is outside. That's not to say Rhossili is in Swansea city centre, that would be ridiculous. So to clarify... Rhossili is IN the city and County of Swansea. Like it or not, The ENTIRE Gower peninsula is IN the city and County of Swansea. It's not that hard to understand!

Spot on. a perfect example of this is Gowerton, or Gower town which one would naturally assume to be a sort of 'Capital' of Gower. Yet Gowerton has always been within the borders of the City of Swansea, so therefore it is only natural that Gower does indeed belong to Swansea! :thumbright:

It is by far the biggest Parliamentary constituency of the three that make up the local authority and also has the largest electorate (approx 61,700). About 23% of the population is of retirement age.

Still reckon Gower is not part of Swansea?

Cardiff City Council also happens to be a County Council, but the word County isn't required in the title because the boundary is the same as the city, whereas in the case of Swansea, the city and county boundaries are different because one is mainly rural and the other urban. Counties include rural areas, villages, towns and cities. Therefore the County of Swansea includes the City of Swansea, whereas in the case of Cardiff the County only includes the City of Cardiff and no additional large rural area.

f*cking hell.
You lot dont half flap when swansea gets some positive media.
For a city that gets little funding compared to cardiff we do ok.
A natural costal city on a goldan sandy beach.
That will do me and we might not have the shops but we have the natural beauty.

i actually kind of agree. i personally don't see why swansea is supposedly best in the UK. (i do personally think cardiff would have a decent shout) but it doesnt make a blind bit of difference, especially on a football forum

I'll agree with all this with the exception one one small thing. You said, and I quote...

the city and county boundaries are different

I disagree.. there is no such thing as the city of Swansea boundary. Swansea starts with the city centre, and as you move out from there you go through the surrounding urban areas (such as Morriston or Fforestfach), on to the suburban areas (such as Gowerton or Dunvant), and then further again onto rural villages (many of which are located on the Gower peninsula such as Rhosilli or Port Eynon), before eventually passing through the City and County of Swansea's border. Again, and I reiterate... The City And County of Swansea's borders are one and the same thing.

So maybe you can see now why it grips my shit when some uneducated Cardiffian proudly announces.. "the Gower is nothing to do with Swansea!"

I suppose it all boils down to the fact that they can't bare the fact that Swansea isn't really a drug infested shit hole, as many would have you believe. Swansea in fact has many affluent areas included within it's boundaries, including the first area in the U.K to be designated an "area of outstanding natural beauty", which incidentally was where I was born and raised, and I've always considered myself a proud jack :D.

Of course the gower is something to do with Swansea and although the centre of Swansea is a tip ( or was when I last visited) there are nice parts (killay, mumbles etc).

Can you answer this question please daps? Under the old west Glamorgan council was the gower part of the city then or has that changed since Swansea became a unitary authority?
