Should we have Team GB?

Definitely a no from me. WALES WALES WALES

In theory, I'd prefer it. International football is ass anyway and a larger crop should yield better teams.

But some England led with cherry picking rather than an equal standing for each nation would be a terrible way to do it.

Besides Wales should qualify for the Euros now anyway.

Don't we have one already? Olympic team?

not for me :old: who would we laugh at then getting knocked out early at world/European cups?

Re: Should we have Team GB?

do you mean team England + Bale and Ramsey?
they would be half decent. would Still struggle to get past the quarter finals of a world cup though

Re: Should we have Team GB?

Not for me.

But they won't be known as 9 English and 2 Welsh players. They will be 11 Brits.

For the first couple of years people will be obsessed with how many players are from each home nation, but in time it will be forgotten apart from by the Daily Mail and The Sun.

It'll never happen though.

I used to want a GB team but that was when we were never certain of our acceptance in the Prem or Europe, but now that has been sorted... Sod em.... Wales forever.

Re: Should we have Team GB?

Definitely no. I love going to watch Wales and couldn't bring myself to support the likes of Rooney and Sturridge. Probably cause more harm than good

Re: Should we have Team GB?

Thu Jul 10, 2014 10:25 am

Pointless. 95% of the squad would be English.

I'd like to think that one day Wales can cause a bit of a shock at a major finals like Costa Rica did this World Cup. Can't see it happening with Coleman in charge though.

Re: Should we have Team GB?

Stick with the Olympics I reckon, not on the international stage. I really enjoyed watching Team GB back in 2012 but it just wouldn't feel the same as watching Wales. :bluescarf:

Not true... and we saw one example last night. Who was playing? THE NETHERLANDS which consists of 12 provinces. Two provinces are North and South Holland, but there are 10 other provinces of course- including Friesland, Zeeland and Utrecht.
But Holland provinces are richer and most supporters come from there. So they chant HOLLAND! HOLLAND!
Holland richer and bigger, England richer and bigger... Notice the BBC calling them Netherlands but itv stubbornly naming them Holland. They are Netherlands but many (including their own supporters) call them Holland.
So a good chance the same would happen with us. Imagine Bale and Ramsey running out to England chants, supported by English fans and drowning out the fewer, less rich Welsh. STICK WITH WALES, BOYS.

Re: Should we have Team GB?

Definitely not for me. The Welsh football side might be shit but they are our shit and at least when we succeed in qualifying for a tournament at some point then it will be all down to us and not with the help of anyone else. That day, I will be very proud. :ayatollah:

Id be all for it. Im aproud a Welshman as the rest of you but ive been watching the bog tournaments as a neutral all my life.
I live in Germany and seeing how chuffed everybody is about the world cup is cool.... but it means nothing to the welsh.
Tell to wake up, we are less populated than most cities are...most of the planet think Wales is a town in England

Fair point there, fella, and Germany certainly improved when the country re-united as one nation, as they are proving right now in Brazil

Personally, not a big fan of the international stuff, but could see the benefit of a 'united' football team for tournament purposes

Don't think it'll happen for political reasons, TBH ;)

That's almost like Bury fans saying that they should just join up with Manchester City down the road because they won't be in the Premier League any time soon.

It's a no from me, Wales forever :thumbright:

Jon, if recent proposals are brought back to the table "with financial incentive" you might well see the Bury/Manchester City link occur one day soon! LOL

Not too sure the analogy fits this particular scenario, though. Like it or not (as Scotland are about to find out) we are the United Kingdom and ultimately are deemed one country in the world away from sport ;)

Not having a go, just making a point. I'm as proud a Welshman as any, but a realist on the political front, too

Fair enough, but just call it England then, like the cricket team. I'm a realist too, we already have a national football side, and were the third oldest football association in the world. If you want to throw that away, go ahead.

The fact some clown allowed one of the smallest nations to be divided into 5 nationalities is a joke in itself.
We are just an island!
Logically we should never of ended up being Wales anyway. It should of just been a great britain that is our nationality UK
were smaller than every other big nation as an island let alone individually

Reason for that is that football started in England. Their first international was against Scotland. Scotland's first international was against Wales. This was before football had taken off anywhere else. The FA, SFA, and FAW are the oldest in the world.

Ireland is a different story again.

After that, football spread all over the world. If the game had started anywhere else, there probably would be a GB side. It didn't, though, and that's how we have our different football associations in Britain and Ireland. Two islands! Five associations.

Re: Should we have Team GB?

you really think that merging England, Wales and Scotland would make a difference???

I don't... Imo the problem starts at the grassroots, how many home-grown players make it to the top-level? Not many? Well, then find the reasons for that, improve coaching, coaches and the development of the players.

Then, another problem is the Premiership itself. No winterbreak, too many games with all the cups and competitions. Surely great for us fans, but contra-productive for players and their nationalteams. Noticed how many non-English players who play in the Premiership were completely exhausted at the WC?

Last time England failed it was due to the fact that they had non-English coaches, who "couldnt motivate the players, who didnt have the passion for the English game..."

Now its merging the 3 FAs.. only excuses after excuses and what's next? The fact that the footballs are made and supplied by ADIDAS, a German brand? They surely would play much better with footballs made by Umbro... ;)

MAYBE.

Depending on quota of how many players were represented from each nation.

Also varying on where games were held. Spain tend to move to all types of grounds for away games which is ideal for every kind of Spanish fan.

If we depended on quotas from each of the four nations, surely that would defeat the whole point? A 'national' manager should have complete freedom to pick his team. Otherwise, all sorts of politics would be involved, not playing ability alone. Tokenism, really. The reality is that most of the players would be English, because England is much bigger than all the other countries put together.

Totally against it.

I'd rather try and have pride in Wales despite the English captain than ever support a GB team.

Re: Should we have Team GB?

Wales are generally shite, HOWEVER its who we are and it has never been about the winning really, its been about our identity ( it's how most of us started supporting City rather than the Manures of this world).

Cymru am byth! A firm NO to a team UK from me :bluescarf:
