Cardiff City accept £8million bid from Harry Redknapp's QPR for captain Steven Caulker
Thurs Jul 03, 2014 By Chris Wathan

It's down to Bluebirds skipper whether he quits club to move to Loftus Road - Redknapp

Harry Redknapp has revealed he has agreed a deal to snap up Steven Caulker as he looks to partner the Cardiff City captain with Rio Ferdinand – but it’s down to the player to decide if he wants to move to Loftus Road.

Cardiff’s Premier League exit has seen Queens Park Rangers take advantage of a relegation escape clause in centre-back Caulker’s contract, believed to be around £8m.

The contract situation has left Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer conceding he is “powerless” to prevent his captain leaving Cardiff City Stadium.

And the Norwegian’s fears look set to be realised with QPR chief Redknapp claiming he has agreed a fee that would see Caulker return to London one year after leaving Tottenham for Cardiff in a £8.5m deal.

Spurs had been linked to a reunion with their former defender, while Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is thought to have placed the 22-year-old on his wish-list, having managed him during a loan spell at Swansea.

Southampton have shown an interest and Crystal Palace – whose sporting director is former Cardiff transfer chief Iain Moody – are also thought to be keen to try and take Caulker to Selhurst Park.

But it appears QPR are leading the way, with Redknapp keen to pair Caulker with Rio Ferdinand.

Redknapp knows Caulker from his time at Spurs and he expects Ferdinand to join his newly-promoted side after the end of his Manchester United contract despite speculation the QPR board had blocked the deal.

However, Redknapp has admitted his move for Caulker is dependent upon the player agreeing personal terms with the play-off winners.

“We’ve agreed a fee with Cardiff and it’s up to Steven to decide his next move,” said Redknapp. “I know him well from Spurs and he’s always been a tremendous prospect. Hopefully that’s another one we can get done.”

Cardiff had been bracing themselves for the loss of Caulker following their relegation to the Championship and it is believed they have been targeting other centre-backs during the summer.

Solskjaer said: “However much we’d like to hold onto a player like Steven, I’ve found myself powerless due to clauses in contracts drawn up before I arrived at the club.”

Caulker returned to pre-season training with the rest of Solskjaer’s squad earlier this week but is likely to head into discussions with QPR.

Hmm, writing in past tense there Annis, so can we take it he has agreed to go then?

Glad in a way as gives Ole time to get someone in and up to speed :ayatollah:

I want Caulker to find a club higher up the food chain. I would like him to get a move to Everton ideally. He has a great attitide - coming to us to get playing time showed us that - and I hope he reaches his full potential. He has the ability to push for the England team. Good luck to him.

I personally believe the deal done with the release clause, where we lose nothing in fees and we entice a quality player to come to a newly promoted side, was a very smart one. Nothing ventured, nothing gained... Or lost.

Jules, apparently QPR are so far giving in to all Caulkers high demands, where as Everton/Liverpool refused to, its 99% done.

Everton/Liverpool would give £8 mill, but Caulkers demands were suppose to be outrageous.

True, but he did go house hunting near Liverpool, a few weeks ago.
But as soon as a London club were really interested he jumped at the chance.

Jones represents everything I dislike about modern day footballers, no effort, no pride, doesn't give two hoots about the club as long as they pay the wages each month. Having said all that, he may just be good enough to score a lot of goals at championship level while still putting in the minimum amount required.

Maybe he will surprise everyone with a glittering coming season. He was never a fans man to begin with, in my opinion, and sometimes wrongfully slaughtered.

Apparently Liverpool laughed at Caulkers demands and immediately put a halt to the transfer couple of weeks ago .

Would be good to have a sell on clause for us but if we got money back and losing high wager that is good for us ! :bluescarf:

£37,500 p/w. Lot of money mind but then again when you see what some players are getting it just goes to show that the game has changed drastically , wasn't that long ago people were shocked when Trevor Francis was bought for a million !!! ffs they want that in wages now
