The club has been undertaking work to expand the Cardiff City Stadium to a capacity of just under 33,500.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=143270

Cardiff City have given fans a glimpse of what the ongoing Ninian Stand expansion will look like when finished - complete with red seats and an Ayatollah.

The club issued an image on Twitter on Friday evening as part of an update on construction works that have been taking place since November to extend the capacity of the Cardiff City Stadium to just under 33,500.

The work will be finished in time for the visit of Real Madrid and Sevilla who will contest the UEFA Super Cup - the competition for winners of the Champions League and Europa League - at the Bluebirds' home on August 12.

The most controversial aspect is new seats due to be installed in the upper tier of the stand starting next week - which will be mostly red.

It follows the club's rebrand from blue to red playing colours made by Malaysian owner Vincent Tan in 2012.

Cardiff City director Steve Borley confirmed on the club's official site on Friday that 5,338 seats were being installed in the stand, adding to the stadium's current capacity of 28,000.

He added the club had tried to "encompass a link with our supporters" by including the image of an Ayatollah - the club's famous celebration - within the new seating.

Mr Borley said: "This adds another 5,338 seats to our capacity which is already 28,000, that’ll take us just short of a 33,500 capacity for Cardiff City Stadium.

"The seats have been brought in to match the quality of the seating currently seen around the stadium and have been brought in from Australia.

"They are a quality, comfortable and robust seat for supporters to watch their football from. In terms of their layout and design, we’ve tried to encompass a link with our supporters by using the Ayatollah above the current design of the bluebird wings on existing stadium seats."

Meanwhile Mr Borley confirmed that the expansion works were on schedule, adding: "It’s been a challenging job. It was always going to be a tough build to undertake in a relatively short period of time, but I believe that we employed the right professional development and construction teams to ensure that it is delivered on time.

"The contractor we chose to undertake the project was the Buckingham Group and they have huge experience in building stadiums and sports venues in difficult circumstances.

"Their experience in delivering projects such as the expansion to Wolves’ Molineux Stadium, Brighton’s Amex Stadium and the development at Silverstone Racing Circuit gave us the confidence to use them."

The improved capacity could see the Super Cup match between the Spanish rivals on August 12 set a new attendance record at the Cardiff City Stadium and Mr Borley said the club was relishing the opportunity to host the clash.

"It’s great to have such an event to open the extended stadium and you couldn’t get much more of a high profile event than the UEFA Super Cup to do so," he said.

"We look forward to welcoming two giants of Spanish football in August in Champions League winners Real Madrid and Europa League winners Sevilla. We’re very fortunate to have secured this fixture and much like our Euro 2016 international qualifying matches with the FAW we are honoured to facilitate such a high profile event here in Cardiff."

Mr Borley added the long-term plan for the redeveloped stand was to house a top quality restaurant facility on level 4 with the two wings either side of the central concourse providing commercial opportunities like executive boxes.

Educational facilities or other projects within the community may also be accommodated within the stand, he said.

Borley seems to be getting a lot of grief on social media due to the seats being red. Not his fault and he's a bluebird at heart so hope the fans lay off him a bit.

I'm afraid it will take more than a couple of Ayatollahs to "encompass a link with the fans".

I've a feeling that the new stand with those horrible red seats will turn out to be a white elephant.

Personally I think it looks horrible.

Wez, Totally disagree with you on this(Not on the seat colour/that wont bother most that much) and we will see what happens.

The fans will be 95% BLUE next season no matter what, not like last time :thumbright: :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:
Second, we will really struggle this time to fill the stadium next season.

Once Real Madrid are gone, we're left with a poxy red stand and championship football. And a third season playing in red. A total disgrace.

Sad but true.

Protested when we were going up, limited.
Protests only started once people knew malky was being sacked which is strange as imo was without a doubt a correct decision and I think people knew that but it got fans going a bit.
The echo jumped on board after relegating which made it look pathetic.

I think the blue small protests will be more this year than two years ago. It's gaining momentum for sure.

We're the forgotten supporters, feels like if Tan had an empty stadium he wouldn't care. Every day my love for CCFC gets less and less. Excitement for the new season is gone... Looking more forward to the Euro Qualifiers with Wales this year. :ayatollah:

Borley has for years asked for help from local people with very little coming back. When it goes tits up people will look for him to save the club again no doubt.

There are not thousands tirning their bavk on the club because of the rebrand! They are turning their back because manure and the scousers and premiershit football isn't being played there!
If we're in the top 8, there will be 21 to 25 thousand.
Mid table, 18 to 21 thousand.
Any position lower, it'll hover around 15 thousand
If we get a home cup tie with the glory prem teams it'll be a capacity crowd.
Nothing will change in that respect, the only difference this season is most of us will be wearing blue. The 19.27 protest will get bigger every game. And I for one am wetting myself with excitement waiting for the start of the season, same as I do every year!

TOP POST. A view of reality in the Championship without the blinkered hatred of Mr Tan and his rebrand.

Very refreshing. Keep The Faith :ayatollah:

If we are mid table struggling our attendances will be down to 15,000. However it would be around the 19,000 mark if the rebrand was none plus. I believe we will miss out on a few thousand die hards now we have had our premier experience.

I do agree with Swindy that our attendances will be up to the 25,000 again if we are top of the league or there abouts. Plenty of people around Cardiff to achieve that.

Borley is talking nonsense. Forging a link with the supporters? Don't give me that PR crap.

If the club wanted to forge links with the supporters, they would still be playing in blue and there wouldn't be one red seat in that new stand. :bluescarf:

He's also a businessman, so if VT says that he wants to build an extention, but the seats are going to have to be red, surely he's entitled to make money out of it, rather than somebody else who would get paid for doing the same job?

You're right Annis. There's a large percentage of fans that were happy to accept red to get their taste of the Premier League (each to their own) but now that we've experienced the Premier League people are starting to fight it more. It's a shame our fans have been so passive about it until now.
