In an unprecedented move Fifa has banned Uruguay’s Luis Suárez from all “football-related activities” for four months for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, ruling the striker out of the rest of the World Cup and the start of the domestic season.

The Liverpool player will not be able to play or train for his club or country for four months after Fifa’s disciplinary committee handed down the hefty sanction, which is sure to provoke dismay from Uruguay and Anfield.

The biting incident, the third in which Suárez has been involved in his career, has also led Fifa’s disciplinary committee to ban the player from entering any football stadium during the ban.

Suárez has also been banned for nine competitive international matches, beginning with Uruguay’s last-16 game with Colombia on Saturday, and fined £66,000.

However, Fifa clarified that Suarez’s ban from all “administrative” tasks related to football did not block any possible transfer from Liverpool during the period.

“Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field,” said Claudio Sulser, the chair of the disciplinary committee, which met late into the night in Rio de Janiero.

“The disciplinary committee took into account all the factors of the case and the degree of Mr Suárez’s guilt in accordance with the relevant provisions of the code. The decision comes into force as soon it is communicated.”

The ban means that Suárez, whom Brendan Rodgers hailed as a reformed character last season as he won both footballer of the year prizes, will miss nine Premier League matches and three Champions League games.

Although Uruguay can appeal the decision, it will not stop Suárez being banned from Saturday’s match because under article 124 of the Fifa disciplinary code it does not have a “suspensive effect”.

Before Fifa announced their judgment, the Uruguayan FA and even the country’s president had weighed into the issue in support of Suárez.

They claimed that Suárez was the target of a conspiracy among the Italians, the English media and the Brazilian hosts to make more of the incident than it warranted.

“You shouldn’t forget that we’re rivals of many and we can be for the hosts [Brazil] in the future. This does not go against what might have happened but there’s no doubt that Suárez is a stone in the shoe for many,” said his lawyer Alejandro Balbi.

Television pictures of the incident seemed clear. The ban – added to previous penalties for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra and for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, mean that Suárez will have been suspended for 34 matches since 2010 without receiving a red card on the pitch.

Liverpool’s chief executive Ian Ayre said: “Liverpool will wait until we have seen and had time to review the Fifa disciplinary committee report before making any further comment.”

4 month ban for Suarez

Thu Jun 26, 2014 2:19 pm

Uruguay and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been banned for nine official international matches and "from any football related activity" for four months after biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.

This is, astonishingly, the third time that the Uruguayan has been banned for biting another player, following his seven game ban while playing for Ajax and his ten game ban just over a year ago for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

The news came at a FIFA media briefing this afternoon, as Fifa media relations manager Delia Fischer read a statement: "The player Luis Suarez is suspended for nine matches and banned for four months from any football related activity.

"The Fifa disciplinary committee has decided the player is regarded as having breached article 48 paragraph one and article 57. The player is to be suspended for nine matches, the first is the upcoming match between Uruguay and Colombia on Saturday."

Suarez had claimed innocence, saying: ''These situations arise on the pitch, I've collided with his shoulder. It drove me a little crazy too, but these things happen on the pitch. There's no need to make a story out of it.''

His Uruguay captain Diego Lugano denied that Suarez even did anything wrong, claiming television replays "don't show anything" and are "nothing important".

should of been the season at least for 3rd time of doing it

Looks to me like he wont be able to be registered for the Premier League 25 man squad or the champions League squad at the start of the season as he is banned from anything to do with football activities including administration. May have to wait until the 2nd half of the season to get game time.

That's an interesting point. Would make the ban a lot better imo.

Maybe this is why Liverpool are making no comment until they see the FIFA report.

im almost certain ive previously read somewhere that although you have to be named within the squad to be able to play..a club is not obliged to submit 25 names..players can be added at a later date, but not replaced once in the list..

FIFA just confirmed that he can be transferred during ban, so 25 man registration wouldnt be a problem.

At the very least, Suarez needs to man-up and acknowledge that he can't behave like this. He needs to stop playing the victim. The ban is far too lenient, but its better than him getting away with it. Uruguay can still appeal, so it might yet be reduced, which would be a travesty.

Apart from Suarez, I really liked Uruguay, but they closed ranks, and tried to defend the indefensible. Bet that Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool do the same.

Hopefully Suarez can grow up, learn how to behave like a civilised man, and get himself into the news for the right reasons. Won't be holding my breath, though.

Just seen that I think if they loose the appeal they should double the ban

Think the punishment is about right. If he had broken someone's cheekbone with a deliberate elbow, most people would say the ban was fair, biting is a pretty disgusting habit, but apart from giving his opponent rabies, causes less damage than a head :? but or elbow in the face. And I had money on him to be top scorer at 28-1.

Thu Jun 26, 2014 4:21 pm

fact that he tried to make out he was hit in the mouth... has not come out with a public apology to player and fans across the world, and his lawyer slapping just as much gums as he does its shocking that the ban is not longer

bare in mind banned from stadiums... not to take part in any football activity... so what if a team comes in for a purchase during the transfer window ?

would have to take a medical... surely a football related issue

its amazing how he was banned for biting the chelsea player in the prem for 10 games... but this is on the world stage and gets a shorter ban :?

He misses 9 prem games, a carling cup game and 3 champions league matches plus 9 internationals. Thats more than the other two bans for biting put together.

I hope Brendan Rodgers and LFC not only publicly admonish Suarez, but also bring internal disciplinary measures in the form of an additional fine.

He has brought the name of his club into disrepute. AGAIN.

This fine represents how many days' salary??? Not many!!!

Imagine a teacher, nurse, policeman or doctor biting a colleague or "client"at work. Probably a loss of job and maybe a custodial sentence would ensue.

3 strikes and you're out in my opinion.

Awh he bit a big hard man center half that ran round like a baby showing off a bit of redness on his shoulder.

Alan shearer calls for as long a ban as Fifa could hand out ( 2 years). Same Alan Shearer that kicked Niel Lennon in the face. Denied any wrong doing and got NO ban.

Fans of clubs say he is a disgraceful human being. Same fans that idolise the likes of Ryan Giggs ( snagged his sis in law), John Terry ( shags best mates bird), Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, Robbie Fowler, Wayne Rooney or our own golf club wielding Craig Bellamy.

Bit of perspective ppl. He didn't kill anyone. He didn't even hurt anyone. Would all this Suarez bashing happen if he played for Athletico Madrid or a non offensive foreign club like that.

Real losers here are the football fans who love watching great players.

Truth is he has let his club and country down. If Medel or Kimbo had done similar, it would reflect badly on Cardiff. Let's not forget, he has been found guilty of biting 3 times.

There is no intelligent argument to defend his actions, as your previous post clearly illustrates.

This is the THIRD time he has been caught biting an opponent. I hope LFC show integrity and join FIFA in condemning his disgraceful behaviour. At least the club won't then be tarnished. I feel really sorry for the club, especially as Suarez has been given so much support in the past. I also understand that LFC fans will feel aggrieved to lose his services again, but that doesn't change what has happened.

I bet Brendan Rodgers is gutted after standing firm during the aftermath of the last incident. Suarez is a superb player - world class, but he has let LFC down again.

Comparing the actions of other players who have transgressed in the past is a bit of a red herring. Some things happened off the field and so fall under the responsibility of the law, and others weren't detected and sanctioned.

To underline: Biting is an absolutely disgraceful act and any attempt to condone it is also unacceptable.

(Is that the sort of reasoning you wanted in the first place?) :?:
