Silverstone for the Grand Prix

Tickets arrived today for the F1 British Grand Prix on Sunday 5th July. Bloody pricey but finally going after all these years and wishing I was there!!! Has anyone been to the Grand Prix at Silverstone before as I would love to pick your brains on the best way to get there and times for race day. Thanks in advance

I'm taking my son for the first time too - well up for it. We've booked park and ride form Towcester, not too pricey at £10 for the car.

Went last year,used M4 to Swindon then cross country to Oxford then M42 to Banbury J11.Booked parking at with Silverstone school on line.£15 per car 20 min walk to circuit and signposted from J11 by the school. No queues at all straight in and out using back toads to the north of Silverstone.

Left Caerphilly at 5:30 got there about 8.came back in via M50 to avoid Sunday traffic at tolls again about 2 and half hours.


Enjoy our tickets were at the end of the Hanger straight great day out other than the toilets and a few city tops seen.

Yeah I was thinking of that way or head towards M50 and across but Ive heard so many nightmare stories about traffic. The Megabus are running a service from Cardiff but they are saying that it would take 4 hours to get there!!!

I hear there's lots to see when you get you there but getting there at 8 where you waiting around much..?

Hope the weathers good for you mate, never been myself, just can't justify spending that kind of money on a weekend at Silverstone for the time being, but it's definitely on my to do list in the future, wish they'd hurry up and start building the circuit of Wales, so I can take in a motogp weekend right on our doorstep. Bloody delay after delay with that project

Have a great day just be aware the traffic chaos to get to the place, allow hours extra for travel.

Adam, will be there myself. Been going for many years, although MotoGP is my main passion

You'll have a fabulous day and it's a lot to take in. The atmosphere during the pre-race stages and he race itself is electric

i agree with the Swindon to Oxford route, as it is more direct (roads are geared up for the event) but make sure you are in there early. It's a long day, but well worth it, even at their prices!

Hope you have a seat booked, as the standing areas are a friggin nightmare unless you are prepared to drop a flag in (moon style) and stay in position ALL DAY!

Plenty to do support races start around 9

Would advise driving as coaches will get caught in the traffic

People have mentioned about camping up there as sounds a right laugh but due to work I can only go on race day and apparently there's loads of stands and stuff for you to have a look beforehand if anyone knows about that

Adam, Abbey Stand is good, but get there early (car parks are open) and consider sleeping in the car for a few hours rather than queuing to get in. It gets pretty manic!

I went two years ago, went on Megabus which was great. Silverstone special.

Great when approaching there as bus lanes.

Yeah Ive heard that its old fashioned stands and that's why Bernie has been threatening to take it off the calendar for years and is pushing the London Grand Prix around the streets

Abbey good view mate. Bernie is right mind.... Silverstone is a bit of a dump compared to many venues and entering is a nightmare. Your have a good day mind as great racing circuit.

The thing is Daya I was thinking of going the full hog with VIP areas but client is late in paying so a little pissed off. But making the most of it and was hoping that the Abbey was good

Also I couldn't believe the locals really embracing it too as almost every house was either asking you to park in their drive or selling hot dogs!!! It was very similar to a music festival atmosphere and I absolutely loved it so much so that I would have gone up there today for testing if I wasn't snowed under with work.

I'm thinking of doing the Belgium or Italian Grand Prix around September and if things go well then I've been offered accommodation for Abu Dhabi in November got the final race of the season.

Strong recommendation is Spa in Belgium. The BEST track on the calendar IMHO and a beautiful setting...

The way THIS season is going, Abu Dhabi is a must, if you are able to make it

Speak to Daya, if you can. He is very knowledgable on F1 and has done a lot more 'foreign' trips than me (so far only Belgium, France, Germany and Monaco for me, although I have done the Indy 500 and that was surreal!)

Seriously, look at the MotoGP event in Silverstone for September. Different type of crow, but supreme atmosphere...and do the"Riders for Health" events on stage throughout the weekend

First of all my best wishes to your family and I will try the Moto GP one day but I'm more of a car man and it won't take long to drive to Spa would it..? and the tickets are slightly cheaper than Silverstone but like everything else its down to my work.

Yes, Spa easy to get too. Dover to Calais and straight up the motorway towards Brussels before branching off to the track, which is sunning (although they do tend to get the odd spot of rain over the weekend of racing)

The worse bit is from here to the ferry port. After that, it's a doodle on one of the straightest, most boring roads I've ever encountered! LOL
