I think England looked better than in a very long time, even though they looked very shaky when defending at times (in both matches). Two very even matches played, quite unlucky to not get away with anything.

Rooney, Baines, Henderson, Sterling, Sturridge, Welbeck and Johnson get a pass in my book. Hart, Jagielka, Gerrard and (maybe) Cahill weren't close to good enough. Thought Cahill looked OK in the Italy match.

Captain Gerrard was, imho, by far the weakest link in this England squad. Couldn't really contribute with anything in attack, and was an absolute disaster in defense.

But England was never a favorite in this WC (or any other for quite some time), and if British media hyped them that much they were foolish. I think you could expect them to advance, or at least be closer to it, but not much more.

But like I said before, I think England looked better than in a long time (considering I only really follow them in the WCs and ECs).

What I don't understand is how a country with a similar size population to Wales have been equal or better than England for almost as long as I can remember. They can't be born with more skill than they have in England, and between the ages of 6 and 14, I would bet that there is hardly any difference in their ability compared to a youngster in England. Everything seems to go pear shaped as they develop, and that surely must come down to coaching methods. You would think a country of 56 million should be able to find enough quality players to comfortably beat a country that has less than 4 million. It's almost like we coach the natural abilities out of our kids, and turn them into efficient robot like players.
