Malky Mackay fits Celtic bill perfectly, says Scotland midfielder Don Cowie

Mackay believed to be interested in speaking to the Parkhead club about their vacancy and Cardiff midfielder Don Cowie says Mackay would thrive if handed the reins at Celtic

There is not yet an identikit for the next Celtic manager. Chief executive Peter Lawwell has pledged that the board will both take their time and use open minds when it comes to selecting Neil Lennon's replacement.

In the impressive figure of Malky Mackay, however, there is a candidate who might well match many of the criteria that could be considered.

Former Celtic player? Check.

Young and ambitious? Check.

Experience at the top level of the game? Check. Out of work and available? Check.

It is thought that Mackay would be willing to speak to the Parkhead club about their vacancy. But he also remains a man in demand south of the border. His name is currently being considered in the boardroom at West Bromwich Albion.

Tempting him to continue his career in the more constrained Scottish environment may not be entirely straightforward. One man who has worked closely with Mackay throughout his management career to date is adamant, though, that it would be worth every ounce of effort.

Scotland midfielder Don Cowie played under the 42-year-old at both Watford and Cardiff and has no doubt Mackay would thrive if handed the reins at Celtic.

'I think Malky ticks a lot of boxes,' Cowie told Sportsmail. 'He is an ex-Celtic player so the fans will be fully aware of him – and he understands the club.

'He is still young in management terms and has done very well in his career so far.

'I'm sure he is desperate to get back in quickly. The Celtic job would probably suit him perfectly. He is available and I can see no reason why he is not the man for it.'

I agree, but if it gets him back in Management, you've got to start somewhere

A Champions League side who beat Barcelona, a club of huge stature, great support and much bigger support and history than ours?

Exactly and also one of the easiest jobs in the world. Malky will take it in a heartbeat to get the Celtic job.

Scottish football, like Norwegian football is dire and no real challenge, the Scottish Championship will be more of a challenge than Celtics division this season and I am sitting with half a dozen Scott's right this minute, that's their words  :bluescarf:

It's beginning to look a bit odd why Milky can't get a job, not even in the Championship. Methinks maybe mud sticks and the word has been put out. Looking like he's going to find it really hard to get back on the football ladder. Meanwhile the guy he was sticking up for is safely in a job with a Premier League Club (got out at the right time for himself). In my opinion Milky should have stayed more loyal to the club that paid his wages rather than a friend and previous employee of the club. :ayatollah: . Still he's gone now not our problem anymore we need to get behind our new manager and support him in his efforts to get us promoted back to the Premier League next season

Clubs only need to look at his transfer dealings and the type of faff he over paid for to stay clear of him.
Malkys level is league one or two and maybe a poor team in the spl unless someone chucks him millions and millions which isn't going to happen again..

It seems Malky is worth more to "us" than other clubs looking for a manager.

Everything about Malky is defensive, i believe that he will struggle to get a good job in a club who wants a long term project. I see him as more of the type who will hang around in the championship/League 1 and save clubs or get them up and then move on to a new struggling club.

Wrong club, Celtic are miles ahead of the rest and an attacking team and need an attack minded manager.

Malky is a poor mans Pullis, this is not the right job at all IMO .....

Malky won't be at his best when all the other teams park the bus and say break us down then if you can.

What a load of utter nonsense... If he is only capable of that level, please explain his first season at Cardiff? Where on a shoe string, he got the club into the playoffs, when the club didn't totally expect it, and into the Caroing Cup final... Taking Liverpool to penalties?!

You bang on about the Malky lovers being ridiculous, well Malky haters like you talk just as much rubbish. :thumbright:

You are only good as your last job... VerysSuccesfull in the Championship, but failed in the premier league. The best he could do is a championship club with a bit of cash....Someone like Cardiff, Norwich, Blackburn, Forest, Fulham,Reading,Boro, Wolves or Wednesday.

There's plenty of managers who have followed this pattern and I expect malky to go the same way as Jinks. some Even after managing the English national team

So you don't think that taking a squad built on mainly frees and the odd loans, to the playoffs and to the carling cup final & taking it to pens against Liverpool as a championship club wasn't in any way successful?!

:laughing6: okay.

its really strange this...............people who the previous year claimed DJ had a huge budget...called MMs budget shoestring........but the club shows the amount spent on players wages remained the same, only in MMs 1st year there wasnt 30k a week for bellers.......

thanks for the facts. I'd always thought that there probably wasn't that much difference but that's quite alarming if true!
