Fans from 15 supporter groups came together for what was promised to be the largest protest against the club’s rebrand to date

Cardiff City fans have marched the streets in their thousands to call for a restoration of the club’s blue identity before Liverpool’s Premier League visit today .

Fans from 15 supporter groups – including the Cardiff City Supporters Club, Supporters Trust, Cardiff City Forum, Cardiff City Message Board and campaign group Bluebirds Unite – came together for what was promised to be the largest protest against the club’s rebrand to date.

The passionate yet peaceful protest followed Vincent Tan’s insistence that 90% of fans supported his lucky red philosophy. A recent poll conducted by the Supporters’ Trust showed 85% of Bluebirds fans are vehemently opposed to the red rebrand and change of club crest to a dragon.

Supporters gathered from 2pm at the Admiral Napier pub on Cowbridge Road East in Canton, and the “blue army” marched down Sloper Road before arriving at the main entrance of the Cardiff City Stadium by 2.20pm.

Fans’ adopted chant of “we’ll always be blue” was voiced throughout, and the crowd sat defiantly on Sloper Road on two occasions – chanting “sit down for our history.”

Scarves, flags and ‘away’ jerseys dominated the sea of blue, and just one red Cardiff City top stood out from the main body of the protesting crowd – it had “Tan Out” scrawled just below the Malaysia branding.

Speaking on the march, Phil Nifield of the Supporters’ Trust, called the owner’s claim that he did not have the support of just 10% of Bluebirds’ fans as “complete nonsense.”

He said: “We want to tell Mr Tan the result of our poll, which said just 24 out of 1,000 supported the rebrand. We are asking him to start to build bridges with supporters through direct dialogue.

Cardiff City Fans protest, "Hate The Red", Love The Blue"

“If he wants to see the true support that he has, we would urge him to commission an independent company like MORI to calculate it using figures on the club’s database.”

Sian Branson, founder of the Bluebirds Unite campaign group, speaking outside the Admiral Napier pub at the start of the protest, added: “Today is a chance for every fan to come together to show their support for the traditions, heritage, history and identity of Cardiff City Football Club is important to us.

“It is completely wrong that we are not playing in blue since we are the Bluebirds, and since we were named Cardiff City back in 1908. It is wrong someone has come in and taken away our colour.

“All we are interested in is seeing that it is restored and given the proper respect it deserves.”

We are finally recovering our clubs reputation and it feels very nice to be part of it. Even reds would've been infected by that walk to the ground. top football buzz.

Respect to those who organised, all the fan groups, and attendees. And btw Annis loved the blue gloves :D

Feel very proud, well done to everyone involved. 4,000 is a great effort.

The 19.27 protest at the game worked really well too. Should we do it every game now, home and away?

It happened well away from the march and nothing to do with it.

Best to hold fire on this one until the details are clearer, I'm told that Liverpool jumped off the coach and came looking for it in numbers of around 40. I walked past the 2 coaches and didn't see any broken windows or shattered glass on the floor, did see a lady on the pavement being treated for what appeared to be a minor bump on the head. I think she had a Cardiff accent.

I have kept out of the rebrand issue until now. Since I have been born Cardiff City have been the Bluebirds and to me the the advantages of being red are only to fall in line with our owner. This cannot be right. Football is all about tradition. Our history is Bluebird history. I shall say no more. Well done on the protest everyone.

I did not say it had anything to do with the march, just that the media will run amock if true, which will in my eyes, take the spotlight away from the march.my wifes friend insists that the liverpool fans had got off yelling that there were kids on board, who rightly were terrified.I am only going on what I have been told.

Brought a tear to my eyes today, although I didn't have a ticket I had to be there , made me feel like I used to feel in the old days proud to be a BLUEBIRD supporter , why can't Tan see how great our support really is for the real Cardiff City not his little plaything , it's our passion that could make this club a real success not his superstitious mumbo jumbo, someone in the club should have the balls to tell him he's got this one wrong, we are Welsh not Malaysian and we don't care about his country's superstitions that's not how we role in Wales. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :old:

Well done to all involved.

Good to see that we can show pride in the club without spoiling it.

Inside the ground was superb. Ironic, but I reckon the crowd was more 'blue' there than when we played Blackpool in the Play-off final at Wembley ;) .

Maybe, just maybe in the long run this will increase our supporters pride in the colours of our club. Sometimes you don't appreciate what you've got until you lose it.
