Cardiff City: Between three and five thousand people expected to protest before Liverpool game
Friday Mar 21, 2014

By Simon Gaskell

Fans from a number of different groups have come together to call for a restoration of blue and the club's identity
Cardiff City fans at a protest held before December's home game with Southampton went very well with over 1,500 attending.

Cardiff City fans could number as many as 5,000 at a demonstration to be held before Saturday's match with Liverpool, it has been estimated.

Fans from 15 supporter groups - including the Cardiff City Supporters Club, Supporters Trust, Cardiff City Forum, Cardiff City Message Board and campaign group Bluebirds Unite - have come together to organise the peaceful protest against the club's rebrand from blue to red.

From 2pm supporters will march from the Admiral Napier pub on Cowbridge Road East in the Canton area of the city before arriving at the main entrance of the Cardiff City Stadium by 2.30pm. :ayatollah:

Supporters have been encouraged to wear blue scarves and shirts as part of the protest.

It follows a poll conducted by the Supporters’ Trust which showed 85 per cent of Bluebirds are vehemently opposed to the red rebranding and change of the club crest to a dragon.

Supporters taking part in Saturday's march and demo said the unified support to return to blue had been growing steadily during the Bluebirds' debut season.

Lifelong fan Annis Abraham said: "We are expecting three to five thousand. By 2.30 we should be at main entrance where we can be seen by all and the world can see we are finally standing up for our identity.

"The general mood is: let's tell the truth. People say 'why didn't people rise two or three years ago' but people were frightened into thinking it as red or dead.

"Everyday I get stopped everywhere and everyone is now saying: we should never have done it - why did we do it?

"I think it will be the biggest protest we have ever done. Families are coming, children are coming. The feeling out there now is people want their voices heard, which is the best thing.

"Youngsters who are the future supporters will realise the future should be blue as well."

Vincent Tan claimed in a recent interview with the BBC that there were a "few hundred" people who he equated to five or 10% of the fanbase against the way he ran the club and the rebrand.

But supporters insisted that wasn't the case and that Saturday's protest was a chance to show the strength of feeling behind restoring the club's identity.

South Wales Echo columnist Carl Curtis, of the Cardiff City Forum, added: "This was they key - getting everyone together and every group affiliated with Cardiff City, officially or unofficially, getting them together and showing unity and it makes people more confident it's a properly organised, peaceful protest.

"The important thing is to show Vincent Tan 90% of the fans supporting him over the rebrand is simply not true.

"We also can't just let the blue disappear and die. If we shut up and go away, red will become part of Cardiff City.

"We have got to show everyone this is a blue football club. We will keep on and protest as long as it takes to return to blue, whether Vincent Tan is here or not."

In a statement issued about the protest on Thursday evening, Cardiff City said that it had invited supporter groups to meet chairman Mehmet Dalman before the game.

The club added a "shared and positive" focus from fans was important heading into the club's final fixtures as it looks to avoid relegation.

The club statement said: "Cardiff City Football Club would like to thank supporter group organisers, including the official Cardiff City Supporters Club and Supporters Trust for working to ensure the pre-match march to the Fred Keenor statue on Saturday afternoon will be peaceful, non-offensive and to clear timelines.

"Following the march, organisers have been invited to sit down with the chairman before kick-off, as stadium staff help facilitate safe and efficient entry for participants ahead of an important Premier League fixture.

"Of most importance is for a shared and positive focus to remain at a critical stage of the season. All at the club are fully committed to working with fans to ensure the team receives the best possible support, both home and away for our remaining fixtures.

"Thank you as always for your support."

Paul Abbandonato: Vincent Tan's problem with Cardiff City fans is getting worse, not better

Proposed itinerary

1pm Meet outside Admiral Napier pub on Cowbridge Road East

2pm March down Sloper Road to Cardiff City Stadium

2.20pm Sing pro-blue songs outside the stadium

2.35pm Enter stadium and raise blue scarves while Men of Harlech is played

19 minutes and 27 seconds into the game Raise scarves and sing pro-blue songs

3,000 is a good turn out, Is it too many for the club to ignore or reds on here to dismiss? will it be 3,000? Any organisers have an esitmation, Pressure on Cardiff fans with media watching.............

Personally i think the Demo should be purely about blue and not about Tan, As i think many more will 'march' on this premiss. I will not be going after recieving intimidation earlier this week, instead i'll be taking my family to the beach for a nature run.

There's usually someone selling scarfs outside the stadium, that's where I'll hopefully be able to get one as I left my blue scarf at a friend's house in London.

The local and national media will be watching with avid interest so an excellent chance to shoot ourselves in the foot.
No abusive or racial chants have been requested by the organisers..but can all and sundry refrain from shouting abuse at our owner? If judging by some of the comments that can be read on here on a daily basis the answer would imo be no.
A few bevvies and a minority may start some of these anti Tan chants and it could spread, how will the organisers deal with this scenario?..ask the culprits to kindly leave the march or will more heavy handed tactics be required?
Hopefully none of this shit will happen, but several hundred or maybe more people gathered together all with a dislike of red and a lesser amount of people with a dislike of red AND Tan out on a mission and with a point to prove could prove difficult to police.
I'm sure the media will relish the prospect of strong anti-Tan undercurrents as a bit of Tan bashing sems to go down well in the press.
I know this is a negative post regarding the march and I sincerely hope my suspicions are way off the mark but I do have my worries.

We live in a democracy where people as long as not breaking any Public Order Act, such as Incitement to Racial Hatred (1986), are entitled to express an opinion, such as, Tan is a W*ANKER etc, even if we strongly disagree with the content. I for one will never be upset over someone else's opinion if I do not share it. It is a good thing this country allows us this privilege.

If you want to continue telling people what they can & can't do, marry a Russian bird & see if you can get a job in their Police Force, you can clamp down on the students calling for Putin to leave office ;) im sure the good sex will make up for it though, Russian girls are hot! :laughing6:

If the Tan abuse starts and the protest turns abusive, watch how quick the media turn on the fans. With the club playing a blinder by offering to talk, anything other than a peaceful protest will be seen as disruptive or ulterior motive driven. The media dont care about colour, only the bettet story. The anti rebrand stance is growing. Keep it peaceful or it may well be the final nail in the coffin with Tan hammering it in.

I agree with you Craig, it would be the best outcome to stick to the planned agenda so that the campaign for Blue keeps the pressure on Tan, I think most have got the message so it should be isolated any troublesome behaviour. He already has used the racist-card on the BBC interview, so is not shy to call out protesting as racist in his attempt to discredit dissenting voices.

However, I am against some peoples' belief that behaviour(s) of people should be enforced by organisers as everyone has a right to say anything they wish as long as it is within the Law.

Very crafty offering the organisers in for a cup-of-tea before the match. Trying their best to control the situation they find themselves in. I dearly hope we get the 5k on the march today to show them :ayatollah:

I am sure it will go well today! Very excited to be back in Cardiff today :ayatollah:

No apology. The club dont want to know and the stance wont change but by "offering" to talk they are making themselves out to be willing. Its called spin and is only happening because of the media. They have put the pressure back on the march to deliver what has been promised and when the Tan out/abuse starts the club will withdraw its "olive branch" on the grounds of the abuse. They win. Its a very clever but cynical ploy and the fact you cant see it says it all.

The club playing a blinder by offering to talk? wow Craig, You've spent the whole year mocking any march on the grounds that the club wouldn't want to know or give any time to a march. so you were wrong there & i await your appology.

I knew that, just wanted a pro red to spell it out for all those reading who still believe in Tans regime

However you did repeatedly mock a fan movement, saying they wouldn't care, this gesture clearly shows they are paying us a bit of respect by entering into a machievelian game, The march(s) attendee's & organisers earned that respect, i hope we see more unity from fans on this matter GOING FORWARD, then and then will our bullying owner consider concesions. still waiting for some humble pie Craig. could get messy if i trawl through your post history

No abusive or racial chants have been requested by the organisers..but can all and sundry refrain from shouting abuse at our owner? If judging by some of the comments that can be read on here on a daily basis the answer would imo be no.

Dont call me a pro red you clown. The fact is, they dont care about the march. They DO care about the media attention. If no media were there they would offer nothing. They have given the organisers enough rope to hang themselves and I hope the likes of you dont kick the stool from under them with the Tan abuse. If you do, the blue cause is lost for good.
I dont think you have the brain power to understand the game the club is playing out in the media.

Craig, there's no need for name calling, constantly you try and straddle two camps with wordings of pro blue, clashing with contradictory actions in favour of the status quo, I.E red & all the accompanying ridicule, Craig, it's time for you to accept that your behaviour isn't helping us retain OUR identity this makes you pro-red, even now you're attempting some weird illusion of claiming the media attention of a march isn't related to the march, because the club only care for the media attention, not the march  . The relationship of march and media attention are symbiotic are they not? Not even David Blaine could attempt seperating the two, but you have, which further demonstrates your atitude towards fans showing pride for THEIR identity. Where i do agree, the march must be about our colours and what they mean, not Vincent Tan. It will be those things, which then leaves you no excuse to be absent, unless you are pro the status quo i.e. red.

I think the club are being media savvy because they have to be, i have acknowledged that, so why the abuse about my intellect? After all i outfoxed you into criticising a regime you're often fuirst to defend, I think you are over thinking the clubs actions and trying to be too clever, they are merely entering a game out of nessecity, an imperitive forced by the march. Credit to the march for forcing dialogue, the trend will continue until Tan makes a compromise, even then you'll deride it at a media game. It';s a results game and a seat at the table for talking is a result to be built on for further 'media games'. And by the way, despite my bbehaviour here, i'm a decent educated guy who couldn't possibly ruin the march. so you need anoter voodoo doll for todays pin pricks PAL :laughing6:

It's the perception of the media, particularly in Asia which will affect Tan.

That's why it's critical we look like the injured party and not a foul-mouthed abusive mob.

Let's keep it positive and concentrate on the main goal which is a return to our traditional colours and badge.
