97% Pass Completion: Cardiff’s Pinpoint Playmaker

Tue Mar 11, 2014 5:53 am

Steven Caulker may have grabbed the headlines as he helped Cardiff City to a vital 3-1 win over relegation rivals Fulham but there was more to the Bluebirds’ performance than their captain’s two goals.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have been happy with a number of his players’ performances, not least Jordon Mutch. The 22-year-old played a major role in a win which has seen the Welsh side move four points clear of Fulham at the foot of the Premier League.

The midfielder recorded a Squawka Performance Score of 56, only two goal hero Caulker managed a higher score for either team. Mutch has been impressive in his debut top-flight campaign and is Cardiff’s second most creative player this season.

Mutch Chances Created – PL 2013/14
Mutch lined-up alongside Kim Bo-Kyung in midfield, Solskjaer having looked to the duo to be the creative outlet in behind the target man Kenwyne Jones.

In total Mutch has created 24 chances over 26 appearances this season and eight of those chances came during Saturday’s win over Fulham. His eight chances also included an assist as Caulker headed home his corner to put the home side back in front.

The 22-year-old took three corners from the right during the match and found a team mate with each effort. He also attempted nine crosses and found a teammate with four of them, all again coming from the right.

The former Birmingham midfielder also looked assured in possession, having misplaced just one pass all afternoon as he recorded a pass accuracy of 97%, of which 60% were played forward.

Mutch Pass Map vs Fulham
His 97% completion rate was the highest in the Cardiff team and the majority of his 30 attempted passes took place in the middle of the pitch as he looked to patrol the centre circle, turning defence into attack. A look at his action areas from the match shows that Mutch spent most of his time in the middle.

Mutch chipped in with his defensive duties and made four clearances throughout the 90 minutes, all of which came inside his own penalty area. He also made and won two tackles, only left-back Fabio won more challenges in the Cardiff squad.

It was an impressive all-round performance from Mutch and his manager will be looking for more of the same as the Bluebirds look to beat the drop in their remaining nine games.

A magnificent signing by Malky. Mutch looked quite anonymous for his usual standards, but that's only because we expect so much from him.

Still, in the first half, Mutch created 2 great chances for Kenwyne Jones. Mutch was then instrumental in the build up for Caulker's second. His first corner was a great bit of quick thinking to pick Kim out, who's shot was saved for another corner. The second corner, Mutch picked out Campbell, who's effort was blocked for another corner. Then the third corner, Mutch saw Caulker and Campbell unmarked at the back post and hit a lovely, lofted, wedge to put it on a plate for Caulker to finish. To finish off, who got on the end of the Noone's cross for our third goal? That's right, Mutch again!

Mutch wasn't as involved as normal, but when he was involved, we created and scored. Mutch was the difference between us winning and not winning Saturday. Yet people who don't know the game criticise him in this thread thinking he was poor. Wake up!

He was a good signing by Malky but you dont have to go OTT just to have a bit of praise for Malky.

His general performance in my opinion was well below his usual and I certainly dont think he was the diference although he has been in many a game.

One of the least affective games I've seen him play. Every time he got the ball someone was all over him and he had no time to go on one of his Yaya Toure style runs.

He will be more involved when we play Everton as we won't be controlling the game and will counter.

You could tell how frustrated he was at his performance.

I haven't gone overboard at all. I didn't realie his pass completion percentage was that good and he was involved with our second and third goals. Since the end of last season, I said Mutch will become a future England international, and if he stays injury free I still think he will. I think he will become that good.

To me it looks like you are debating the stats, which is fair enough. Seems to be a lot of static positioning safe play and 4 key passes, at least one of them you mentioned.

I agree he has potential but he needs to be far more consistant.

Im assuming these stats dont count for the number of runs he made and lost the ball when he had a better oppotunity to pass. He certainly can be an england international but to get noticed I think he needs to chip in with more goals as well as get more consistant.

I wasn't debating the stats mate. I was praising Mutch for another good performance. Unfortunately, we have fans like Craig who are passionate, but don't have much of a clue about football.

I agree there are times Mutch can be anonymous, but he's still only 22. I remember one run where he overdid it and lost it during the second half. Like I said, Mutch wasn't as involved as he can usually be, but I still think it's very harsh for fans like Craig to say he was hopeless, especially as Mutch had a hand in our second and third goals which won us the game!

What opinion, saying he was average at best? Care to elaborate and debate why you think he was average at best? I have given my opinion that Mutch had a decent game and backed that opinion up with facts with what Mutch produced during the game to help us win. You haven't backed up your opinion at all, so I can't really take your opinion seriously.

Saturday wasn't his best game but he grew into it in the second half. Probably been our best outfield player this season along side Noone. We always seem to miss him when he is injured.

Thought he was average at best, to be expected after rushing him back from injury I guess.

Love Mutch and I'm a massive fan of his and feel our creativity goes when he doesn't play but he was very average on Saturday. Although he was probably just not match fit, the stats work in his favour and no doubt he's a great player but he can play better than that, we've seen that he can

Agree with the above, except the stats dont work in his favor. They make him static and safe playing, all though hitting a high
pass rate.

Craig is probably the poster in here i tend to agree most with. Most of what he says makes sense to me and i like reading his posts. A man with good arguments and a respectful approach to team and manager.

And i agree again, Mutch was not his usual and shows that he lacks a little fitness after being injured. But the talent of Mutch is huge and i also agree with Tonteg that we will see him play for England in the starting 11 in the future if he avoids injuries.

People are agreeing with me in this thread. I haven't said Mutch had a sensational game, I've just said although Mutch wasn't involved as much as usual, he definitely didn't have a poor game as he created chances and was involved with our second and third goals. You seem too thick to grasp that and you still haven't explained why you think Mutch was "average at best". You can't seem to back up anything you say with facts, so you are impossible to rationally debate with. Nevermind.
