TEAM SELECTION

Defense
In a huge game like yesterday you can't play three players in the back four who have never played together before . That's what pre-seasons are for not big premier league six pointers . It showed in every goal that they were disjointed and ole made a huge mistake picking that defence.
Why Andrew Taylor was brought straight back into the team over Declan John baffles me . He was awful again and at fault for the third and fourth goals . The same goes for Fabio , he's an awful excuse for a full back and IMO isn't even good enough for the championship .

Midfield
Same as the defence , I don't believe he choose to go with two players in midfield who have never played together ( maybe 5/10 mins somewhere ) and have no understanding of each other's game in a huge game like that . They were going to be up against it anyway against Huddlestone, Livermore and meyler in the hull midfield . Then he decided to accompany that with possibly the laziest player I've ever seen in Wilfried Zaha . Piss poor decision again by ole

Forward
I like the fact he plays with 2 strikers on the pitch but what is the point in playing Frazier Campbell , a goalscorer in a kind of free role in between the midfield and jones . The guy needs to be up top on the shoulder of the last defender not getting dogged down chasing shadows trying to win the ball . Given that, what is the point in Kenwyn Jones winning flick ons if he got nobody to flick it on to or hold up the ball for when his partner is nowhere near him ? His style of play doesn't suit our team .Ole says that Inge berget is a link man between midfield and the striker so why not play him in his natural position rather than play Campbell out of position ? Makes no sense unless he realises he's not good enough !

PLAYERS ATTITUDE

From what I saw only 3 players seemed to either try or even care about the game yesterday . They were Campbell , Juan Cala and Mats Dahlei . The rest seemed disinterested and couldn't be bothered being there . It's the first time I've seen that from this squad this season it's as if they know they are going down so can't be assed trying anymore .
I don't know what has happened in that dressing room but something is not quite right and the players don't look happy to me .

FANS ATTITUDE

I know it was a piss poor performance but the atmosphere yesterday was abysmal . Then again why should we show any heart and passion when the players don't .

I hope everyone will keep quiet about Gary Medel now Tom! He will go to a big club when we are relegated i'm sure. To have to defend him on these pages has been just ridiculous.

I agree about Medel - could see him slotting into Everton maybe

Yesterday just goes to show how much we miss him . The difference he makes to the team is phenomenal , the problem is people only notice the flair players and the goal scorers . Medel is pure class

The first goal he would have been all over Huddlestone like a rash , the second eikram let jelavic run into the box unmarked , the third Livermore was left free on the outside of the box as well. None of them would have happened if medel was on the pitch IMO

Your at an advantage Tom, you've played the game of football, whereas, alot of fans haven't and don't understand Medel's role in the team. I couldn't believe the chief writer of the Echo already claiming Woolf Eikrem as being are more 'cultured' player than Medel.

Medel's first touch is sublime, his passing range is'nt shabby either even though that should be the job of the others who pass-the-buck onto Medel to do everything. I would of loved him to stay with us for along time, looks like it will only be 3 months more of El Pitbul :sad7:

When we were 1 nil down I heard a guy behind me say we are missing Gary Medel. Wtf I thought they only had one attack we were all over them. After the game I can only agree with him because for most of those goals medel would have been there picking those players up.

Re: What went wrong yesterday

Not too far off the mark there by the OP. Fabio is not good enough IMO, and I question the selection of John over Taylor.

We missed Medel for sure, but that aside, for me, we lacked some real presence just behind the strikers - with Noone and Zaha, we can ping crosses in all day but there's never anyone on the end of them, or the striker fumbles them and it gets cleared. We seem to be missing a threat in the middle who can play the ball through the middle and hold it up a bit. As the OP said, Kenwyne Jones wins many flick ons and headers - that solves a problem we used to have, but there's nobody on the end of them...

Goes to show what the pitbull been doing for us ......running the show , just look at eikrams pass in the centre of the field for the first goal....before he had the ball fabio at right back was in acres of space and if medel was there he would have picked that out but where was It played ? Back into a square of 4 hull players  and then it was back on the halfway line FFS !!!!!!

Re: What went wrong yesterday

Is this the same pitbull that was in the side for the 3-0 defeat to Swansea, and 2-1 at home aginst Wigan in recent weeks? :?

You have 5 points from a possible 33 and a lower league cup defeat. He was an ever present for all but one game.

Pitbull..... over hyped player. Hype and hysteria generated simply by the Welsh small minded media. Not a bad player but hardly a worldie.

Agreed. He is defended vociferously because of his price tag and his bad boy reputation. He is one of the worst performing defensive midfielders in the league. Not saying he is a bad player, but he has not been performing well pretty much all season. His cult hero status sees bad performances turn into average ones and average ones turned into excellent ones.

And the same Medel who was rolling around the pitch like a bitch when we played the jacks at home.

Re: What went wrong yesterday

Sun Feb 23, 2014 12:52 pm

There's a very fine line between success and failure, and to be fair we are only lacking a bit of quality in three main areas, defence, midfield and attack. Just needs a bit of tweaking and maybe 8 or 9 new signings and we can go from strength to strength.

The same Medel that was outstanding in that game? :?

He's not as great as some make out, but he's still an important member of this team.

I don't want to single any players out as they were all poor yesterday but people are quickly there to slag off cowie and taylor etc

However the player we paid 9 Million for has been dreadful for weeks and had a big part in all four goals yesterday....the way caulker got out jumped for the 3rd goal and the way the lad got round him for the 2nd was embarrassing for the money we paid, but hes been like that for weeks...yet its alright for him to do it.

The third was Taylor's fault , caulker covered him when out of position and was pulled wide , at that point Taylor should have dropped into the centre but he just stood still leaving jelavic to run in behind cala free . By the time caulker noticed it was too late and he couldn't get back .

The second caulker stopped long running in behind him making him turn , the midfielders lost the runner from deep which allowed long to find the easy pass . How is that caulker a fault he did everything right in both goals .he was let down by the players around him .

Are we supposed to believe that Jedinak is a better player than Flamini, Luiz, Carrick et al.? He is playing well I know, but seriously, if football performance was based all on stats, then players like Jedanik would not be playing for Palace, more likely being scouted by Barcelona according to this

Its nothing to do with being the better player, it is about who has performed the best this season. Michu was one of the best performing attacking midfielders last year, was he scouted by Barca? No. Marshall is one ofnthe best performing keepers this year... Is he having the Madrid scouts after him? No.

There is no point innhaving a decent player if he isnt playing well. Id rather an inferior player playing better - hence the point.

I have to agree with this, Taylor was in a perfect position to go to challenge Jelavic, Caulker had to come from behind Taylor to challenge but didn't get there. He's certainly not playing like he was though, but probably doesn't know who he is playing with from one week to the next.
On another note, whilst expressing concern about Turner's playing ability, I've never questioned his defending. He had probably had his best game of the season against Villa and hasn't been seen since, dropped like a dog, what kind of message does this send to the squad??

Medel would perform better in a midfield that was not depending on him for everything + he is not just attempting 5yard sideways/backwards passes like Jedanik. He was the only recruit that had any hope of making an impact or impovement in that area. I take your point he was overpriced, but if we had 40million to play with then spending excess on the right players is no crime. Medel is a class act.
