Secondly, the site seems to suggest that a one off payment, or 10 monthly payments are the only way to renew... what happened to the 5 monthly payments option?

i think it all depends on the company they use and what deal they get. i have paid for mine just 5 mins ago

im thinking of just paying it up front but it will hurt, would have done the monthly payments otherwise see.

i was lucky i started saving a few months ago so just had about enough saved up to pay for it, otherwise i would have done payments if didnt have the money, its hurts big time seeing so much go out but wouldnt have it anyway, 1100 pound holiday yday and season ticket today ouch
