Cardiff City fans hit back at Craig Bellamy's shock blast over Peter Whittingham criticism
2nd Feb 2014
Bellamy gestured to the home crowd and publicly slammed the treatment of Whittinham, who was substituted after just 38 minutes

Cardiff City fans have hit back at Craig Bellamy after the Cardiff City superstar lashed out at them for jeering during the desperately needed 2-1 home triumph over Norwich.

Bellamy stirred up a hornet’s nest by holding one finger to his lips as he celebrated his equalising goal and then blasted fans for their first-half support.

Bellamy claimed the fans had made it personal, comments taken to mean criticism directed the way of Peter Whittingham after he was embarrassingly hauled off for game-changer Wilfried Zaha with seven minutes still to go in the first half.

Some Cardiff fans also loudly jeered when the Bluebirds, trying to play the patient possession football Solskjaer wants, twice passed the ball backwards to David Marshall, rather than lumping it forward.

In a TV interview Bellamy raised eyebrows by saying: “I haven’t heard the crowd like that. That’s not the club I’m from.

“I saw them turn first half, and I’ve not been a part of that. I’ve not seen them direct it at individuals, which they did.”

There were thousands of comments on social media with fans responding to Bellamy’s outburst, many angry, while others defended him. Supporters we spoke to yesterday believe Bellamy should have been more measured in his criticism of them, but also argued jeering of Whittingham was unfair.

Echo columnist Carl Curtis, who organises away travel, said: “Nobody near me was having a go at Whittingham. I did not pick up on the booing. I only heard Cardiff fans cheering for Zaha going on.

“I thought Bellamy should have had more control over himself than that. We are fighting for points and we don’t want players speaking out against supporters who are perfectly entitled to criticise. Bellamy should not have said anything.”

Vince Alm, spokesman for Cardiff City Supporters Cub, said: “I would have liked Bellamy to be a bit more measured in the way he did it, but he was frustrated at the treatment of a fellow professional. It wasn’t right to have a go at Whittingham. The standard of support has dropped at Cardiff City Stadium in recent home games and we, as fans, have to up our game.”

Lyndon Cushing, from Aberbargoed, said: “Bellamy was wrong to say what he did because fans pay good money to watch the team.

“Whittingham has been poor for a while. He may be tired because he has played more than most, but I thought Bellamy was out of order.”

Alex Clarke, from Porthcawl, said: “Any reaction seemed to come from the Canton Stand which is why Bellamy ran over that way with his ‘keep quiet’ gesture. Anybody who booed or jeered Whittingham, a loyal servant of our club, is disgraceful.

“Bellamy’s comments, too, are a little bit unnecessary. He was talking about a small number and not the vast majority of Cardiff fans. That was unfair.”

Not point in hiding from the fact our fans boo'd and jeered him off. Got your head in the sand.

Also Bellamy was right, how people disagree is beyond me.

Should concentrate on his own game a bit more.

He's not pulled up any trees for quite a while now.

That report also fails to mention the fact that he not only getured to the fans but also swore at them quite clearly and audibly.

That's entirely his perogative - as it is the paying fan's perogative to show their feelings also in any way that they want within the law.

It's the way Bellamy is often ranting after Wales games (like us all  ) his passion is needed for the derby on and off the pitch so time to focus on that! Thought I'd come back on forum for the SWD build up. :ayatollah:

He was like that in 09/10 and other seasons, no-one slated him then.

I suspect Bellamy was getting his own back after being jeered himself by fans, following his poor displays this season....remember his free kick a few weeks ago from about 30 yards out which missed by a mile.
'Loud groans' were heard following that shot.

Exactly right, probably because the idiots who booed were watching Chelsea on sky then

Bellers gone up in my estimation, unbelievable that people are even trying to justify one of the best players we've had here being booed off,

I would imagine that he is feeling pretty bad, however, we would be feeling a lot worse if we had lost yesterday.

Only them of guilty consciences would try to justify anyone booing Whittingham.
Bellamy was right. The atmosphere was non existing and scores of teenage man-boys
think the game is FIFA14. it DOES NOT MATTER how bad Bellamy may play. that is a
different issue. the facts is that Cardiff 'supporters' booed on of best players for a decade
and to suggest Whittingham was not trying is poor ignorance

If the goal was a reaction to the booing, lets get Bellers angry again I say. :ole:

Sadly for as long as I've been going there''s always been an element of our support that have been 'boo boys' but this season it's been more obvious. Perhaps it's the lack of results and negatives around the place. It must also be the nature of the crowd these days-scores of teenage man-boys who think the game is FIFA14.-great phrase.Knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing. But don't forget the grumpy old gits as well.

Whitts probably need a rest but I hope he comes back strongly.

p.s. he was a foot away from scoring just before he went off.

People who booed Whitts should have a serious look at themselves. He's been a great player throughout the years and just because he has a dip in form people think it's ok to forget all the the good things he's done for our club? Bellers is right it's not the club we are. No one should boo one of there own
