I hope we get Zaha

Wed Jan 22, 2014 9:11 pm

I can't believe I've actually read people saying they would be underwhelmed if we sign Zaha. There is absolutely no way you can say he was an average championship player last season.
In my opinion he was the sole reason Palace got promoted last season. His form dipped towards the end of the season but he dug deep to tear Brighton apart in the play offs. He's rapid, tricky and knows where the net is. He may have struggled to break into Man Utd team but we are not Man United. I'd have him in my team every day of the week before Ashley young.

We have been absolutely crying out for someone like Zaha for 3 seasons yet some of you are still not happy!

Wouldn't mind if we didn't but happy if he does, I hope he can perform for us.

Apart from money we don't offer a lot in terms of attraction, okay working under Ole might be a pull.

I think we lack a bit of arrogance in our squad and we have for a long time because MM weren't the biggest fan of that. No dig at Malky but I think right now we need it.

I agree with you! Noone on 1 wing and zaha on the other, I'm excited about this. :ayatollah:

Some people are going to get a shock at how good he is.

Re: I hope we get Zaha

Thu Jan 23, 2014 9:29 am

its the same people who think we should be getting rid of the likes of turner whose excellent for us and also fringe players like connolly who is a good FOURTH choice back up. u wouldn't get anyone better coming here to not even get in the match day squad.a lot of our fans want super stars who we just won't be able to get. bring on zaha

Re: I hope we get Zaha

I agree. He will be our most high profile player, a few good games and he will be talked up for the England World Cup squad you know exactly how the English media work

Some people are saying they are underwelmed because of statistics like this:

2013-14: Man United
Apps: 4
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
2012-13: Crystal Palace :|
Apps: 50
Goals: 8
Assists: 10
2011-12: Crystal Palace :sleepy2:
Apps: 48
Goals: 9
Assists: 7
2010-11: Crystal Palace :sleepy2:
Apps: 44
Goals: 1
Assists: 4

The stats arnt awe inspiring and considering that we arnt scoring enough goals as it is - this doesnt look like the type of player we need.

Having said that he is obviously skillful and provides a few assists - being young he is only going to get better so hopfully he proves an asset to the team - personally a decent signing from OGS and I hope he does well for us

They are good stats for a winger.

What do you expect? 20 goals, and 20 assists a season?

No they arnt good stats for a winger - they are average stats and nothing to write home about seeing as its at championship level & a few of the goals & assists are from Carling Cup against lower league.

I didnt mention either figure of 20 goals or 20 assists so i am not sure where got those figures from.

7/10 in the championship, 8months with no football. At best he's a 5/10 in the Prem. Had the fear factor in the championship for some reason yet never really did anything. Here he's an average player in a position we might need cover but not as much as we need a CB.

Re: I hope we get Zaha

Whats the stats on chances hes created?

Not to mention if he takes two players on, opens up the space, plays it to someonelse who plays it through to another player that doesnt count as an assist so your stats dont account for that.

I will go with my eyes thanks rather than restricted stats as football is played on grass not a computer screen.

He is skillfull and pacey, with an eye for goal. Something we are seriously lacking as a squad.

Thank f**k you are on here mate. What has happened to football fans in this day and age. Everything is governed by f*cking stats!
Back in our day everybody used to take the puss out of that statto guy on fantasy football.

I don't need stats to tell me about Zaha, I watched him about 20 times last season. Glen Murray scored about 30 goals last season and about 10 of them were pens created by Zaha.

I watched him plenty of times terrorise defences in big games and he's exactly what we need.

I like Craig Noone but people need to take their cardiff goggles off if they think he's better than Zaha.

Go on the Palace forum and see how pissed off they are that we are signing him and that should tell you everything you need to know!

If Zaha was 7/10 in the championship then nobody in our front 6 was worth more than 5/10 last season

I think this assists stats thing is a load of bollocks. I mean a winger could beat the defender and put 20 decent crosses over
during a game, but will only be given credit for the one time the striker hasn't fluffed the chance or the defending team haven't cleared the danger, leading to a goal. How often do we see Nooney race down the wing and put the ball over only for Campbell and co. to mess the chance up. We still though, rave about Nooney afterwards.
There's also the element in Zaha's game in which he likes to take the ball into the box and use his quick feet to win penalties. Something our current player's don't seem to do.

Haven't had a pen yet have we?. Only 1 red for Vorm aswell, for teams playing us.

Probably not, especially with Malky in charge focussing on defending more than attacking.

If you rate Zaha that's fine he was a flashy player playing in a league that essentially kicked players like him and I'm more than willing to be proven wrong.

But from what I've seen he seemed selfish, a few little tricks and petulant. But yeah he does have ability.

Okay fair enough - there was no need to mock me in your last post with you're 20 goals a season comment - I offered an explanation into why some fans are underwhelmed, it was rational and compiled from firm statistics with my opinion attached to it.

However, statistics as you have pointed out often do not paint a true picture which is why I have also partly based my opinion with what my eyes have seen - he was pretty poor against us both times he played us in the champ last season and McNaughton dealt with him very easily IMO

My worries are if he cannot cut it against a weaker cardiff team than what we currently have - how will he cut it in the prem?

But as I previously mentioned - he is obviously skillfull, he is rated by football experts and pundits who are far more knowledgeable than either me or you and I obviously accept that players have bad games and that maybe he wasnt at his best when he played us.

Time will tell

I'm excited with what Solskjaer is doing down there lads. We've have all been begging for some pace and some players who can get bums off seats for years now, and Solskjaer has come in looked to address it straight away.

I'm buzzing at the thought of Zaha and Noone on the wings and if we get Fabio and Declan John as attacking full backs it will be refreshing to see our teams try to win games.

Add to that this Berget lad from Molde who can play in the left and in the hole as well as Mats Moller Daelhi who reminds me of Jonathan Williams from Palace and Eikrem and we look to be having a decent transfer window that will change the emphasis of our play.

A striker and a centre back now and it will end up a superb window for us.

Whether we stay up or not, I welcome seeing a team who will put the opposition on the back foot next season.

far too much emphasis placed on stats.

Zaha would be a superb signing, no question about that. Any doubts would be over the lack of game time recently, but that about it.

Zaha will be a frustrating signing. He will do one great thing not many other players can do with his skill and talent, but then do 5 or 6 bad things with wrong decision making, taking on a man too many instead of passing etc. He's a luxury player who Man Utd have clearly not wanted to carry this season.

Re: I hope we get Zaha

Thu Jan 23, 2014 11:27 am

He destroyed teams in the Championship and he won most of the penalties Murray scored. Every week I was waiting for Palace to get another penalty from him getting fouled in the box.

An exciting player who can win us vital free kicks and penalties? You'd have to be foolish to turn that down at this level especially when we're crying out for a player of his type.

I dont belive that I was being sensitive - just pointing out that you need more substance in your reply if you want me to consider you're point of view

I can take critisism and opposition to my point of view, i generally enjoy discussions about football as there are so many opinions on every aspect of the game - but i felt that you're comment contributed nothing to the conversation

As you are often quite open with you're opinions on this forum I assume you want people to agree with you - reasonable and constructive posts will alter people sides in a discussion rather than an aggressive approach
