You're right it shouldn't be headline news. The fact that it is, is damning of football and its inability to diversify. Be it on the topic of race, gender or sexuality.

That Thomas Hitzlsperger has come out of the closet is indisputably good news.

The man himself can now be just that, himself, without the fear of recriminations or abuse.

Hitzlsperger says homosexuality is "simply ignored" in football. He told Zeit that "homosexuality isn't a serious topic for discussion in England, Germany or Italy - at least not in the dressing room" - but it should be.

I have already seen this morning people argue that "making a big deal out of it" helps no-one.

But I disagree, and so does the player.

"I am talking about being gay because I want to move forward the discussion about homosexuality among professional sports stars," and it is the media's duty to help him do that.

There is no circus. There is no hullabaloo. We simply have the opportunity to show other footballers that are not yet ready to be open with their sexuality that they should feel comfortable and safe to be so if they want.

Broadcasting around the world the overwhelmingly positive reaction to Thomas Hitzlsperger's interview is a key part of that.

If a gay person is surrounded by that sort of environment i imagine it can be quite awkward, especially if that person is keeping quiet about their sexual preferences, must be difficult to feel like you can be yourself.

Surely that's because it's assumed to be a 'norm' and thus Hitzlsperger 'coming out' has only helped towards breaking down ideas that footballers/sportsmen and fans may have about homosexuality?

I do agree that it shouldn't be news in 2014, but it is because it has been such a taboo for so long. Take the interview with the gay footballer in the Bundesliga last year - he shouldn't have to hide what he is for the sake of appearing to be a societal 'norm'?

unfortunately, many still hold homophic prejudice, and we only have a liberal and open to all society if we finally make that step and "liberate" homosexual human beings, who didn't choose to be gay, bisexual or lesbian, but were born that way.

They keep on filling the news with this as if their is an end goal. No chance will everyone accept homosexuality, it is not going to happen. They seem to think it will.

Many people face prejudice day in day out. How is calling someone ugly not as serious an offence as calling someone Gay as an insult?????. I'd say it is much worse saying someone is ugly. But hey, ugly people can't be categorised can they?. The media can't claim it's a hate crime as the majority of people are ugly. Can't have a hate crime against a majority now can we? It has to be the poor repressed minority.

Gay people will always struggle coming out to their family, a celebrity coming out will not change that. All it will do is make the media have their monthly 'everyone's is homophobic, even if they aren't' agenda. Yeah but going into the media spotlight is not going to solve that. You can't force non acceptors to accept through methods of oppression. People will believe what they want and view things how they want as they have their own values. Then you have to factor in a proportion of this country is Christian and Islamic and that there are those within those faiths that totally disagree with homosexuality.

The media are just trying to force it on everyone. I don't have a problem what people do but when its forced in my face as some substitute for actual news it does my head in just as a headline with 'Katie Price is back with Peter Andre' would or 'Beckham and Posh split' would. Who cares what they do in their private life? I don't and I suspect most rational people don't.

Surely media spotlight is the best way for society to progress? I don't think it's forcing any opinion onto anyone. If people are staunchly against it then they will probably remain so, but even their opinions are allowed to change over time if they are presented with other opinions - that's the way the world works.

Do you think the end of apartheid/civil rights movement would have progressed without increasing media spotlight and key figures in the 1960s-1990s? It is very much, in my opinion, a similar situation here, though I respect not everyone would feel that way.

No, I was. I didn't want it to happen but she said her husband can't get up and has been constantly visiting the GP for some meds.

I don't see why he felt need to do it to the whole public, I mean good for him that he can finally come out to his fellow professionals but you don't see the same fuss for general public who come out as gay, I got an older brother whos gay and Ive seen first hand how time it is for gay people to live in certain societies but it shouldn't be made out to be a massive deal its the 2014 now I don't think anybody is too surprised these days.
