Craig Conway is on the City bench.

Mark Hudson is ready to come in from the Premier League cold and make his FA Cup mark for Cardiff City today.

The Bluebirds’ club captain has not played a match for more than three months and has yet to make a top flight league appearance this season.

But he looks certain to get the nod from new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to team up with Steven Caulker in the centre of the Cardiff defence at Newcastle.

Hudson, goalkeeper Joe Lewis and striker Nicky Maynard are among those pressing for a chance to show new gaffer Solskjaer what they can do.

“It’s a fresh start for me, a fresh start for everybody in the squad,” said Hudson.

“My aim at Newcastle, if I play, is to impress and get myself into the team.

Newcastle United

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini is set to miss out after being sidelined for up to six weeks with a knee injury.
Yohan Cabaye (Achilles) and Tim Krul (shoulder) are doubtful, while Mathieu Debuchy is suspended.

New Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will juggle his squad in his first game in charge.

Joe Lewis, Mark Hudson and Declan John are all in the frame with Craig Noone and Gary Medel likely to be rested.
In the build up to the tie Solskjaer, who won the FA Cup twice with Manchester United, said: "Every game is important. We know how close Cardiff were to lifting the cup a few years ago, so we go in there hoping to go through to the next round.
"The Premier League is very important but the FA Cup gives us a chance to build momentum.
"We are not going to go there and give 99%, we go out there to give 100%.

"I have had success in the FA Cup a couple of times and walking around waving to the fans after winning it are memories you remember."

Newcastle United welcome Cardiff City to St James' Park for their FA Cup third round tie without a quartet of first team stars.

Tim Krul and Yohan Cabaye are struggling with respective shoulder and ankle problems, while Mathieu Debuchy starts his three-match suspension for the Magpies.

Fabricio Coloccini could be sidelined for up to six weeks with a knee injury suffered in the 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on New Year's Day.

Both Cabaye and Krul are included in the provisional squad, but are unlikely to feature in the cup tie.

Provisional squad: Krul, Elliot, Alnwick, Williamson, Yanga-Mbiwa, S. Taylor, Santon, Dummett, Haidara, Tiote, Anita, Cabaye, Marveaux, Sissoko, Ben Arfa, Gutierrez, Sammy Ameobi, Bigirimana, Obertan, Cisse, Remy, Gouffran, Shola Ameobi.

Surely no Cabaye is great news if true.

That attacking graph shows exactly what's been wrong with us all season.

It's always on the NBC streams at half time and I cringe every time I see it.

Our team balance has been out of whack all year due to Malky's insistence on pretending Whitts is a winger.

Thank god he's gone, hopefully Ole will see sense and sort that out.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer begins his reign as Cardiff City manager when he takes his side to Newcastle United for a third round FA Cup encounter at St James Park on Saturday.

Solskjaer was announced as the Welsh team's new head coach earlier this week after Malky Mackay oversaw a run of 10 games with just one win following the derby victory over Swansea.

Former Manchester United striker Solskjaer sees his side going into the match just one place above the drop zone after having lost 2-0 to Arsenal in their most recent match.

The hosts, meanwhile, have been in good form in the league so far this season and are up in eighth position, although they have lost their last two league encounters, to Arsenal and West Brom.

The Magpies will be without defender Fabricio Coloccini, who suffered a serious knee injury on New Year's Day against West Brom.

Fellow defender Mathieu Debuchy will also not be playing - he sits out the next three games after being sent off against the Baggies.

Solskjaer is likely to be without marksman Craig Bellamy, who is still battling with a knee concern, while midfielder Gary Medel may be rested after a recent bout of flu, as could Craig Noone.

TEAM NEWS: New Cardiff boss Solskjaer likely to rotate as Newcastle forced to make changes

NEW Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to rotate the Bluebirds squad for his first game in charge as Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be forced to make changes as for the FA Cup tie at St James' Park.

Right-back Mathieu Debuchy starts a three-match ban after being sent off during the 1-0 Barclays Premier League defeat at West Brom on New Year's Day, while central defender Fabricio Coloccini could be sidelined for up to six weeks with the knee injury he suffered during the same game.

In addition, keeper Tim Krul is struggling with a shoulder problem and midfielder Yohan Cabaye is a major doubt with an Achilles injury.

Meanwhile, having observed the games against Sunderland and Arsenal, Cardiff's Norwegian tactician is expected to hand the likes of Joe Lewis, Mark Hudson and Declan John chances to impress.

Craig Noone and Gary Medel could be rested while Craig Bellamy is still struggling with a knee injury.

Newcastle's provisional squad: Krul, Elliot, Alnwick, Williamson, Yanga-Mbiwa, S. Taylor, Santon, Dummett, Haidara, Tiote, Anita, Cabaye, Marveaux, Sissoko, Ben Arfa, Gutierrez, Sammy Ameobi, Bigirimana, Obertan, Cisse, Remy, Gouffran, Shola Ameobi.

Cardiff's provisional squad: Marshall, Connolly, Caulker, Hudson, Turner, Whittingham, Medel, Cornelius, Campbell, Odemwingie, Brayford, Kim, Smith, Noone, Gunnarsson, Mutch, Cowie, Mason, Maynard, McNaughton, Theophile-Catherine, Lewis, John.

We need to stay in the fa cup so the players dont feel complete pressure on the premier league. If we lose this our season is done apart from trying to scrape points to stay up.
