Daily Mail Criticises Cardiff C fans/Why Cardiff City Died

Tue Dec 24, 2013 10:56 am

Tuesday 24th December 2013.

Adrian Durham in today's mail slams into Cardiff fans for not protesting when Tan changed our identity.

" And so a part of Cardiff City Football Club died. "

Vincent Tan actually spoke last summer with knowledge about the kind of money Cardiff would need to spend if they were to survive, quoting the figures at relegated Reading as their measure. Some have said he knows nothing about football, I don’t think that’s true.

Get shirty! Changing Cardiff's kit colour from blue to red is unlikely to be the last crazy decision made by Vincent Tan

As owner of the club he should be going about his work in a more respectful way, but he has been given permission by the fans of Cardiff City to do exactly what he wants.

" And so a part of Cardiff City Football Club died. "

In May 2012 Cardiff City’s then chairman Dato Chan Tien Ghee wrote an open letter to supporters declaring that plans to change the home kit form blue to red had been abandoned because of ‘vociferous opposition’ from the fans. He said: ‘We have no desire to cause offence’ and went on to say the owners did not want: ‘people to think we have no respect for the club and its history.’ The letter then promised that Cardiff would play the 2012-13 season with blue home shirts.
Less than a month later the decision was reversed, the red shirt was brought in, and the club said: ‘brave, bold and compelling decisions need to be taken… to enable the club to progress to the next level in its development.’
The statement had started with news of a ‘major and significant financial investment’ from the owners. So they bought the fans off.

There was opposition from some supporters, but sadly they let it happen. The badge and the shirt colour changed and this apparently gave the club a better chance of success.

And so a part of Cardiff City Football Club died.

Only the most spectacularly naive among us would have thought that would be the only crazy decision from Tan. It’s only a few months since he declared: ‘never say never’ when asked about the possibility of the club changing its name to Cardiff Dragons. His admiration for Dr Assem Allam’s desire to swap City for Tigers at Hull is no secret.
When too many Cardiff fans accepted the shirt colour change, because they believed it would help guarantee success, Mr Tan received a message that he could go ahead and do what he wants.
Fans need to stand up for what they truly believe in. They need to stand strong. If they don’t then they will relinquish emotional ownership of their club, and owners will treat it like a toy.

Sometimes even protests won’t work though: just ask supporters of the original Wimbledon. Even the Football League ignored the fans then.

There IS still time.. we've been given a window to be united, it needs to be taken.

Durham is one of the best 'wind up' merchants out there, but that is hugely because he 'knows' football ;)

It takes a very intelligent person to understand the game so well he can 'push the buttons' of fans in the right way to get a calculated reaction, which is perfect for his popular Talk Sport radio show

Sadly, as others have said before him (including on AAMB) Adrian Durham is right in his comments that we "missed the boat" right at the start

However, that doesn't mean there aren't things out there that the paying supporters of Cardiff city FC cannot influence, as those fans who went to Anfield showed :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Correct its never to late and we will rise this time, those that belittled/threatened/endorsed the Red,there was no need for that, I am sorry I will never forget.

If fans could now totally stop wearing Red at City games, that would be a Great Start :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

The other big difference now is that tan is getting a large amount of bad press in his home country over his behaviour with Malky and the rebrand.
That alone will influence him more than our protests. Face means everything to tan and currently he's losing it in abundance in his own country

My reply to Durham is tell us something we do not know.

If his aim is to get a reaction then he is about 18 months to late. He has missed the train to make a name for himself here, a bit slow if you ask me.

Morning Steve,

Without croaking on I did tell them " get at him in the Malaysian press " but there we go.

The demonstration if it's good enough will kill him ----- for all the money in the world he won't have seen one before and it will be an international success if it hits the papers in Malaysisa which it should do.

The down trodden People of Malaysisa who are " yes sir " can fully see even to persons like the the dictator you can demonstrate your real feelings.

Why do you think Tan tried controlling Malaysia social media channels .......... This is his worst nightmare

Launch those blue smoke bombs !!!

Disagree. It's easy to judge from the sidelines. City fans reacted with a mature, balanced response to the change of colours. We were in the midst of a promotion challenge and City fans did what they ALWAYS DO BEST - support their team and their manager. If the majority had gone the way of the minority [no criticising them], I wonder what the effect of large-scale protests would have had on the team.
'Malkygate' was the defining moment, of course, when to use the old cliché, 'enough is enough'. There was enough debate on messageboards etc on both issues to fill a library, but sensible, balanced debate as opposed to 'pitchforks and torches' will always win over abuse, threats and rants. That's why even now I'm not in the 'Tan Out' camp, more in the 'Tan listen and change' camp. Despite what has gone before, we will be a better club if the man can be brought round to see sense and to understand the club isn't his - if he doesn't change, I'll be firmly in the Tan Out camp, for sure.

Despite the numerous factions/points of view amongst our fans, the supporters of CCFC have behaved impeccably the last 18 months, and the Malaysian fella should be truly thankful for that !

The trouble with being in the "Tan listen club" is that you will be waiting a long time. With all the latest fuss, its incredible that despite requests he is not even talking to Malky so as fans we have no chance. The trouble is that whilst we are waiting for him to listen he will be busy making his changes to our club and attracting more controvesy until it will eventually be too late. :ayatollah:

I dislike the fact that he says we accepted the rebrand for success!!!

The only reason I tolerated the rebrand (even though I hated everything about it) was down to financial security!!! I did not give a shit about going to the premier league it was just the fear of going bust and not having my local football club there to support anymore.

And I honestly believe that the majority of fans were the same as me, I maybe wrong though.

Anyway at least fans have woken up (including me) and are now attempting to do something about it, better late than never :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

See you all at 1 on boxing day :malky: :malky: :malky:

Luckily for him his job is to promote controversy and not find solutions. Another public commentator who critiques without offering anything.

Baiting Cardiff City fans, wouldn't he just love it if we reverted to type and it really does kick off on boxing day.. The authorities wanted to turn football into a middle class game, thats what they got a middle class response. We did nothing but complain on social media.

From what I've seen over the past couple of days, I agree that the likelihood is that events have been driven more by PR than a desire to 'work' with the supporters..

Annis there has been abuse coming from both sides of the blue red debate, and it's wrong totally. We are all Cardiff City fans and the abuse and arguing amongst our own has been one of the most sorriest episodes of the whole saga.
