A vital stimulant to encourage more indigenous business opportunities. We need more welsh owned businesses with strong transport links to the eu.

A good airport is crucial to Wales. Cardiff Airport has a huge runway so lots of potential. It's a slow process though to fix the damage done by the previous owners.

Good. I'd rather my taxes went toward making the airport successful, instead of giving it to dole bums, smack heads, prisoners compo, legal aid for assholes, immigrant housing, MPs expenses, cosmetic surgery on the NHS, translators for non English speaking benefit claimants, I could go on.....

rather that money be spent on the NHS.

Sevenside Airport project should have been chosen!!!

a new airport seemed the obvious choice as no jumbos can use cardiff airport,so will always have massive restrictions... :ayatollah:

Adam,

If you cared to do some more research into the longer term planning and potential positive impact the airport development could have, you may take a different viewpoint.

As with many policticians (successful and failed such as yourself) they often take the easy solution for the best short term gain, whilst avoiding the difficult long term decisions.

Cardiff airport has been able to accomodate 747 jumbos since the 80's when it was originally extended. Therefore, the airport already has capacity to cater for jumbos from a landing and take off perspective. The main reasons why the airport has become unattractive to airlines, is that from a logistical perspective, the airport simply can't currently handle significantly increased numbers of passengers through the terminal, the road links are poor and the rail links non existent, so the airport has never been able to compete on a level playing field with other airports.

If you also factor in that the previous owners priced themselves out of the market, by increasing the passenger service charges they charged airlines by 350%, it's clear why changes were required.

Heathrow Terminal

There is also a strong possibility that Cardiff airport could be chosen as a new terminal for Heathrow, which if opted for, would drive the development of a new high speed rail link from Cardiff to London, with transfer times of just 50 minutes.

If this happened the potential impact to the local economy and infrastructure could be huge, with the liklihood of far more businesses then viewing South Wales as a more viable location for business hubs/centres.

Even if this does not happen, just by extending passenger capacity and the terminal itself, along with applying competetive airport charges, new airlines can be attracted to use the airport again, which will also improve the prospects of the economy.

Sometimes you just need to look further than the end of your nose. I think the Welsh Government, for all their failings have got this right. Whether they have the nous to make it work and carry through the plans properly remains to be seen.

Blueboo: top post mate!! Are you a politician? If not why not? Fantastic potential with the airport, needs time to turn it around, as you quite rightly say.Infastructure has to be improved and good links. If done correctly airlines will come no doubt.I would always choose to fly from there whenever possible.but find myself having to fly out of bristol due to lack of route choices currently on offer at Cardiff.I hope the wag can get this right. The possible benefits are huge.

First of all it was only 6 days when British Airways announced that they will not return to Cardiff even through the maintenance facilitiy is there: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-25269974

The location is in the wrong place, the train station which open just a few years ago and celebrated by the WAG yet it isn't even within walking distance.

I have always supported the Sevenside Airport so how on earth you can say that I'm not looking at the longer term I find laughable. A brand new state of the art Airport located on the M4 to replace both Bristol and Cardiff is the best way forward and the area would benefit hugely rather than ploughing millions upon millions of taxpayers money into an Airport when at the sametime the same Government are allowing the Welsh NHS to crumble around us!!! We all know that its an completely out of date airport which had it not been for the British Airways Maintenance depot then would have closed by now.

And finally when most of all the Governments around the world have either sold or are in the process of selling off their airports because of the cost factors low and behold the WAG are buying one!!!! Ensuring it to be a complete vanity project which will only end in failure.

Bluesince62,

I'd like to think I'm too honest to consider a role in politics, so I'll leave the deceit to the likes of Adam.

It's in all our interests in terms of having a thriving economy in the region to have a successful airport with an increased number of airlines flying to more destinations.

If ultimately, the airport is chosen as a Heathrow terminal, the new rail link will have a massive positive impact, although those with a green slant will no doubt kick up a stink and Westmister will also have to subsidise the infrastructure development massively. I think this is one motivating factor to make the airport more viable as an option.

On the downside, if anyone can bodge things up, the Welsh Assembly can.

I dont think anyone is against that point but a Sevenside Airport is the future surely

A report published by think tank the Institute of Welsh Affairs also backed the Sevenside Airport: http://www.itv.com/news/wales/story/201 ... port-plan/

There is also significant support from the Chambers of Commerce and independent bodies for Cardiff to become a Heathrow terminal. As always there are different viewpoints.

The Chambers of Commerce would support anything which would benefit the local ecomony but both ideas would benefit the local economy but a new state-of-the-art Sevenside Airport would hugely benefit the area far more than Cardiff Airport alone

Also there is no realistic chance that they will make Cardiff a Heathrow terminal when they have the prospect of explanding Gatwick/London City/Standsted/Southend and thats not including the proposal of a new Boris Island Aiport.

I thought the good thing about Cardiff was that it had a long runway suitable for big planes?

Re: More of our Taxes loaned to Cardiff Airport!!!

Thu Dec 12, 2013 7:11 pm

Cardiff airport is able to accommodate the Airbus A380, which is the biggest commercial aircraft in the world. Very little runway development is required. It is the terminal capacity and travel links that are lacking.

At this moment in time the Cardiff option is still very much on the table, as all other options for Heathrow face significant opposition.

The Severnside option also faces massive opposition and has already been rejected once in 2003 based on long term estimates of passenger numbers and the data assumptions originally used actually proved to be over optimistic based on current data.

Martin Evans speaks a lot of sense on the subject.

A British Airways Montreal to Gatwick plane landed in Cardiff on Tuesday it said it was a two leg flight but I think it was probably an emergency landing

The A380 landed there recently, and BA service there jumbos there. Also I think the runway is long enough for planes flying nonstop to west coast USA. As someone else posted, the terminal and road links are It's biggest problem.

Ive flew from Cardiff the Florida back in 1992ish with Monarch but I'm sure Tuesdays landing was just down to the disruption with the air traffic control.

Whatever the reason:it landed and took of with no drama!! As Blueboo says links and infastructure are the sticking points.plus a new state of the art terminal.I also believe it has advantages over the other sites regards becoming a hub airport.Blueboo, glad you got the spelling correct on the severnside proposal! And I agree, that being too honest is not a trait, that will get you far in politics!!

The long runway has been there since the Maintenance depot was located there and thats many years but it will only ever be really used for that.

I agree with being honest especially when you accuse someone for being shortsighted when they are actually looking at a greater long term plan!!!

Adam, rest assured my honesty or integrity has never been questioned in the local press. You on the other hand, well, probably best not to trawl up your history again. So many question marks???? No smoke without fire and all that.

You're so well versed on the Severnside Airport proposal you can't even spell it.
