Mehmet Dalman " MALKY WILL BE FULLY BACKED BY OUR CLUB "

Mon Dec 09, 2013 8:39 pm

Monday 9th December 2013.

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman insists the board will give Malky Mackay the support he needs to keep the club in the Premier League.

After a positive start to their first top-flight campaign for 51 years, the Welsh club have suffered a slump in form that has dragged them towards the wrong end of the table.

A 2-0 defeat at resurgent Crystal Palace on Saturday left Cardiff in 16th place, as they extended their unwanted record to five league games without a win.

With a tough run of fixtures coming up that will see them take on West Brom, Southampton and fellow strugglers Sunderland at home before the turn of the year, as well as a trip to in-form Liverpool, questions have been raised as to whether the club will need to strengthen in January to avoid being sucked into a relegation dogfight.

Yet Dalman has revealed that the board have always been fully united in their desire to give boss Mackay their backing, and that is not about to change.

"As a board, our responsibility is to support the club - the club is the focus," he told Perform.

"I think if Malky were stood here he would agree we've already given him quite a lot of support when we were in the Championship when he came in.

"The owner of the club, Vincent Tan, has pumped in quite a lot of money over the last year - I think we were the seventh-highest spenders in the transfer market (in the close-season), just above Manchester United.

"So from that perspective, we are fully committed to the amount of money we have available, and of course in the future we will see how things go.

"In any business you have to be prudent in any planning you do. At the end of the day, we're here to support the club, including the manager, and run it as successfully and profitably as we can."

Asked specifically what funds might be available to bolster the squad in the next transfer window, Dalman insisted that it would be down to Mackay to draw up his list of potential targets first.

"I hope (there will be money available)," he added. "We haven't had that discussion. It really is something the manager has to decide.

"It's his decision for him to tell us what he needs, then it's up to me to set the budgets that may be there, or may not be there as the case may be, and we will manage it going forward.

"We have a strong team; we're fully united and we're committed to getting everyone on the same page. He (Mackay) is always knocking on my door, but not necessarily for money."

To be honest mehmet can say what he wants,it's tan that does the hiring and firing

I think the indicators are that Dalman is the main reason Malky is here now. And he clearly has a good opinion of him. It's all a game of who blinks first and in this case I think it was a lot of our fans.

Pity, when Jan comes and Malky buys cover for LB and a youth striker we can all be proud we didn't get a manager who likes attacking football in.

From an outsider point of view, it see,s some are reading the headline rather than the content. that doesnt seem like a backing of any sort of certainty.

The language os very much of "we have to do whats best for the club" and saying that they have "already backed him with money" recognising the club have spent the 7th highest amount in the premier league.. When drawn on the future he says "we will see how things go".

Also heard he was a certainty for the chop within the next couple of weeks so very surprised at this announcement from the guy who only recently stated that Tan is very ambitious and doesn't just want to survive in the Premiership. I guess Dalman believes that Malkay can shine as long as he has a grey haired footballing maestro alongside him or its at least worth trying to avoid paying out compensation.

Hopefully the football will become more exciting once this aging footballing maestro is appointed as i'm afraid that whilst Malkay has many attributes we have come to love, there is no doubt, as shown this year and last year, he has his limitations when it comes to playing attacking football. It was dire last year with Cowie and Whitts in the Championship and yet they are now first choices in the Premiership despite it being obvious to most of us that both players are even less effective at this level.

It shouldn't be forgotten that the Kim, Gunnarsson and Mutch midfield that got us out of the Championship was forced upon Mackay and I can't help feeling that as in American Football, we need a forwards 'coach/director of football' to go along with what is a pretty good defensive coach/manager. Hopefully the blend of experience and inexperience will work if egos allow as I like Malkay and there are far too many managers whose reward for getting clubs to the promised land is to get sacked within a few months of being there!
