Cardiff Opinions On Newport County

Wed Nov 20, 2013 5:48 am

Just to appease my curiosity.

I'm a Cardiff City fan, born and bred. I grew up with the suggested inclination not to like Newport. But this season I can't help but look out for their results, and enjoy when they do well. What are other Bluebirds opinions? Do people still have the bitterness? Or do you embrace them as a smaller Welsh side? Does it help that they've loaned Oshilaja?

Never really took Newport County that seriously, to be honest. Somerton Park was a tip, probably the worst ground I have ever seen in my life. Last time I remember going to see the City over there was in the late 80s. We won 2-1, and I think that Paul Wimbleton got one of the goals. Division 4, but even then we were a thousand times bigger than them. Just remember parking my car near the ground, and going to the game. No hassle, but it was the last time that I got searched by the OB going in!

Remember the Welsh Cup final at Ninian Park, (and the repay), when Merthyr beat them. Merthyr had more support.

Personally, I couldn't care less about other Welsh sides, but Swansea and Wrexham were always bigger games.

Newport are about on a par with Hereford. The Bristol clubs were much, much bigger.

To me Newport were our rivals in the 70's and 80's. At the time I had real hatred for them. When they went out of the League, I really felt for them. Now I actually hope they do well in the League and I was pleased to see them return.

I'm a Newport boy, but a City fan ;)

The intense rivalry between the two clubs was before my time; I hope County do well, partly because the town's been in the doldrums for years and it could do with a lift.

I've never really looked a them as a big rival in football . It was more rivalry with the fans for me ,the last time I went down there Annis made the front page :malky:

Your right it was rivalry with some of the fans both sides, more the Casuals. But I think most Newport fans dont like Cardiff, but it was just the Cardiff Casuals that never liked them.

If you go back far enough (late 60's) it was possible to support both on alternate Saturdays. No animosity then, that I recall.

They seem to be doing OK and good luck to them. Enjoyed many derbies with them back in the day.

I read the newport messageboard from time to time to keep up with the news and gossip on our nearest and dearest, and can never understand the shear hatred a lot of their fans have for us. i know we've had a few "encounters" back in the day but you can hardly call us football rivals at the moment. id have thought that having a premier league club right on their doorstep will only be to their advantage, giving newport the ideal opportunity of loaning some of our younger players, friendlies, and a boost to their own cities economy. They seem to love swansea which i also find strange. i wish them all the best and hope they make the playoffs this year.

I'm originally from the Rogerstone/High Cross area and can remember Newport when it was a bustling town back in the late sixties early seventies, my father worked in Cardiff all his working life and took me to Ninian Park in 1958, I've been hooked ever since.

I always keep one eye on the County, and was pleased to see them return to the league after the problems they've had over the years, like someone mentioned earlier hopefully the city will benefit, as it has become a ghost town compared to how it was. :ayatollah:

I live with a Newport County fan

I asked him what his opinion on Cardiff was as I couldn't give a shit about them. He said that to County fans, we're their big rivals, but they hate how we just don't care about them. They even sing about us apparently.

Newport would be a perfect feeder club,we could loan them players, when some needed game time,or coming back from injury, they never could get as big as cardiff, lost a lot of support to is when they went out of business

I spent four years working at Acorn Recruitment and Training, lets say the County supporters hated Cardiff City with a passion, but it never got personal !

I spent a few seasons photographing the County whilst they were non-league and I was pleased as anyone when they got promoted back to the Football League, though it does mean I can't get in for free anymore !

When I worked in Swansea though, my nickname was Scum !

Some good county lads in the acorn offices. They seriously hate us...

Don't see why anyone would consider them rivals. makes me laugh some of them singing songs and hating us. As for them loving Swansea, i don't think either lot should flatter themselves as they are only united in their dislike of us. When they played each other last they were fighting each other.

We've only played 6 league matches against Newport since the war, when we were at our lowest and them at their highest. even then we only lost once. Last meetings being 25 years ago when we did the double comfortably. Sorry, this might sound arrogant, but it's true.. It's like Orient seeing West ham as rivals or Mansfield v Forest etc..

Newport could benefit form a close relationship with City, and also could boost gates by welcoming City fans, but I for one would not give them a penny whilst they still have a hard core of knobs who have an irrational hatred of our club.

I can't hate them, what's the point, just think any rivallry with them is all a bit irrational.

At the moment I want them to do well for the area, it's good for the economy, attraction and maybe even Welsh football if they can spend more money on youth and scouting. However if they really start climbing and make it to the Championship, I think my part time support for them would be out the window, don't want them challenging us for the No.1 in Wales spot

Same with Merthyr really, I'd like to see them in the conference soon. Good for the area to have so many teams doing well

To keep it simple: I hate Swansea, Wrexham and Newport County.

They are our rivals end of the day, forget this greater good about Welsh football, it doesn't exist. You will never see Liverpool fans hoping to see another fellow English team to do well.

Yes I don't mind loaning players to rival clubs, as it benefits both clubs.

But as a supporter I see my identity as a Cardiff fan, anyways, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Agreed and early to mid 70's - still look for Newport result.

Personally, i've always considered them Cardiff's little brother - no hostility from me at all - hope they do well (but not better than us, ha,ha!!).

This, I want Merthyr Colwyn bay and Wrexham in the football league though.

i dont think we have ever had bitterness for them? just sympathy i guess and a bit of who the feck are you maybe over the last 20 years. We only really became rivals when we sank down to the lowest level. Defibately some very violent encounters with there fans over the years....

In the early 70's I thought of Newport as our little Neighbours and always looked for them to win, went over there in 79 to watch them play Pompey and all their songs were anti Cardiff songs  I realised and a few other things from that day that they hated us.

Are they still in the FA cup? Really hope we draw them away in the cup, so we can invade the place and show them the error of their ways... Hating us is futile. We're to big and cuddly to hate.

Went to see them against Pompey in Johnstone Paints last week for first time in 25 years.

I wasn't really interested in seeing them at an athletics track but now they've got a proper atmospheric ground.

I was at their last league game before this season, in 88.

My dad would take me occasionally when City didn't clash with them so have a soft spot for them.

I don't care that some of their lot don't like us - I wouldn't if I was them!

Well said. The hate that Newport had for Cardiff back in the 80's was full on, and as we've only played you I believe twice in thirty years(one in the faw , and the other in a pre-season) where there was spontaneous fighting at both of these games, we know don't look at you as rivals, enemies or scum. It was even time to move on before these two games, but a lot of lads were out for revenge on those occasions
Most have grown out of that now but if a club tried to take libertys, most would if not all getting involved.

ps Hope you stuff manure on sunday, and am looking forward to watching this Danish striker you bought.

My opinion on Newport is the same as it is for Swansea, they are a Welsh so I wish them a degree of success in that I hope they come up the levels but when they are competing with us, I hope we beat them in games and league placings!

Being a newport boy and city fan, I hated newport with a passion.

But now I want them to do well, they could be a useful loan outlet for us, especially if they are promoted again. A league 1 club could be useful to us.

As young Cwmbran Grange End Boys in the 70's we often had a problem with County Fans waiting for us at Newport Train Station, as in them days we had to get off and walk through town to catch the bus to Cwmbran.
