Grangetown,Riverside and areas of Roath have really gone downhill in recent years but there other places which are still very nice and interesting.

Born and bred Cardiff --Splott--Rumney--Ely--Canton ---but unless you can afford to buy a house in the nicer areas ie Llanishen, Cyncoed, Rhiwbina, Lakeside, Lisvane ,Heath, Llandaff --then its all gone down hill
Three reasons
1 Crime Rate--had my house broken into twice car three times shed once and crazed un inisured motorist smashing into my house/Car also dont feel safe me or my daughters walking anywhere south of City Centre
2. Trafiic/Parking ---getting ridiculous queues everywhere all day 1 hour to get onto town and back 2 miles away .Parking fees ridiculous.
3. Immigration-- sorry to say but the open door policy has ruined the fabric of society in large areas Cardiff -- lack of integration, community spirit etc--Just want things back like they were in the 60s 70 s 80s --- when we valued and were at one with the community we lived in.
Moving 20 miles away --nicer house but cheaper and a real communtiy spirit
This is happening all over the UK it has been termed as "White Flight" although that is not a totally acurate phrase.

point 3 you make a valid point, the strain on housing, schools, health etc is at breaking point and will get worse before it gets better.Sadly there's no going back to the decades you mentioned.

Cardiff feels a bigger place than it used to a decade ago. It needed to grow but as usual it hasnt put a transport infastructure in place to cope. a light rail between the bay and centre is a must for starters....

Has it ever been 'uphill'?
I agree Roath has changed since I grew up there in the 80's, but its still a pretty cool area. We're going through tough economic times and its the working class areas which tend to suffer, boarded up shops, beggars, etc etc
my old man is city road (milton street)way before your time, and he walks up there now an again he said it
like chippy alley now with all the take aways,
Too many immigrants have spoiled the community spirit, but there are still people here which take pride in there neighbourhood. Adamsdown has got it worse, or Adamski as its now known..

What are your views on the areas of Cardiff..?
Adam, as in all towns (including yours) there are areas of Cardiff that are "in need of attention"
However, as is evidence by changes already made to The Bay (including the initially strongly opposed Barrage), The Docklands, the old Grangetown marshes, etc., it is safe to say that the local Council are motivated to improve and modernise the city
Whilst it will not/cannot happen overnight, there is the will for it to happen and the areas you appear to be targeting will receive the attention they richly deserve in due course
I loves my city, I does. It has character and (on the whole) its people are as friendly and accommodating as any in the world (never mind the UK)![]()
