James’ comments, which may well be pinned up in the Bluebirds dressing room wall by Mackay, come as the two arch-rivals get ready to lock horns in the biggest Welsh derby showdown in history

Welsh football legend Leighton James has thrown down the derby gauntlet to Cardiff City by claiming not one member of Malky Mackay’s team would get into the Swansea City side.

Pundit James, a self-confessed Swans fan, insisted in his South Wales Evening Post column today : “I’m confident Swansea have a better team than Cardiff.”

He continued: “When I look through Mackay’s squad, only Steven Caulker, Craig Bellamy, Gary Medel and Peter Whittingham could compete for places in Swansea’s side.

“And even then I’m not sure they would get in.”

James’ comments, which may well be pinned up in the Bluebirds dressing room wall by Mackay, come as the two arch-rivals get ready to lock horns in the biggest Welsh derby showdown in history.

He snubs the enormous gifts of Bluebirds midfield aces Kim Bo-kyung and Jordon Mutch and also dismisses any suggestion in-form David Marshall could be ranked better than Swans keeper Michel Vorm.

James also slammed the FA’s decision to make Mike Dean the man in the middle for the game, following on from the controversy surrounding the last time he took charge of a Welsh derby.

During that game in the Welsh capital four years ago, Dean was struck by a coin and awarded the Bluebirds a last-gasp penalty which James claims “is still one of the worst calls in football”.

Ashley Williams was judged to have pushed Ross McCormack, who got up to score from the spot to grab a deserved 2-2 draw for City.
