Club owner Vincent Tan’s meddling in team affairs has extended to sending Mackay in-game texts demanding substitutions and tactical changes.

Tan is happy to take a back seat when things are going well, according to sources close to the club.

But amid the tension as the Premier League came within sight last season and now as the Welsh club have struggled in the top flight, the interference has become more and more common.

Mackay is said to be fed up with the meddling and indications around the club are that he is only holding on to ensure he is properly compensated when the axe inevitably falls.

Yesterday the club had to deny reports they had gone as far as asking Mackay to resign in the wake of the sacking of Iain Moody.

The head of recruitment has been replaced by 23-year-old Alisher Apsalyamov, a Kazakhstan national who has contacts with Tan’s son, but no known footballing experience.

It is the latest move that has unsettled the club after agreement on the players’ bonus payments for winning promotion was only reached a week ago.

As a result, the squad had made it clear that Tan, who was the main money-man behind the takeover three years ago, was not welcome around the dressing-room. After an impressive opening home victory against Manchester City, Cardiff have slipped down to just one point above the relegation zone after only one more win in their last five league games.

Now, against the backdrop of these latest revelations regarding direct interference by phone, Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust chairman Tim Hartley has called on the club to make clear their position with regard to Mackay.

“Fans want Malky Mackay, who has done a fantastic job as manager, taking the club to the Premier League, to remain at Cardiff City,” said Hartley.

“We don’t want to see any action taken to undermine his position as manager and Cardiff’s efforts to have a successful first season in the top division.

“There are fears that the current developments could drive Malky into the arms of another Premier League club. He is a talented manager who has huge respect among the fans and we deserve a clear statement from the club on what is happening.”
