Brownie, not really clued up on stuff like this. To be honest I switch off when people mention the stock markets etc.

However, I am considering doing something like this soon, how much do I have to put in? How much can I expect back, if any and when?

I might buy because it's almost free money but against privitisation in principle.

Minimum purchase amount for general public is £750's worth of shares.

Brownie, if I purchase £750's worth of shares what return am I looking at mate and how is it worked out?

Im new to the world of finance in this area.

Golden rule James. Don't expect.

It's a gamble buying shares and unless you have inside information you simple just don't know which way it is going to go.

The only advice I will give you is try and workout if the company knows what it is doing.

Cheers Ian. Thanks for the info. I will obviously do a lot more research into this before I put any cash in as I suspect anyone would. I was just curious. Im guessing the dividends return is quite small on a small investment like this so in reality its probably not worth my while at the moment and if I went into it I'd have to dedicate a lot more time into it buying and selling at the right times on the market to make gains that I wanted which of course would take time. Time I unfortunately don't have at the moment with work and uni.

If I was you I would look into the penny shares companies.

These are the companies that have gone on the market whose shares range from 1p up to 10p. As you can imagine their initial investment requirement is small and their returns can be impressive. I once invested in one of these Norbain Security, and brought at 10p. Within 6 months their shares shot up to £1. My initial amount was small enough that if it was a total flop I would not miss it. However it was not a flop and the returns paid for one or two nice things.

The exciting part about these types of companies is the fact you can do a lot more research on them than perhaps the close companies like Royal Mail. With regards to Norbain it was a company located in one position and that allowed me to go and see the size of it. Further research showed me the had a high factor space per employee. I actually applied for a certain job with them to further dig into their business. I didn't get an interview, think they worked out I was wasting their time, but from the little talk I had with them they had won a contract with a major distributor somewhere. If I would have found out who this distributor was I would have invested a lot more.

Sounds a lot of work but in this case it was worth doing. besides it can be fun if you have the cheek to go through all this.

Unfortunately its a waiting game but there is always a risk. However the people in the know are saying that the prices are low to start with and are expected to do well throughout its first year of trading.

I do agree with the lower valued companies as well. Ive brought shares in Falklands Oil and Gas which have been around the 30p mark for months but I now hear that there's possible new drilling in a well early 2014 so fingers crossed

Also as previously mentioned it is an excuse to generate interest in different industries

Personally I feel the RM offer will be a safe bet.

Their line of attack is to sell off their profitable side such as the large cities. Expect the services to the remote parts to disappear. This will go against public opinion but RM are now being driven by profit not sentiment. They should have done this years ago.

I agree that they are a safe bet and that it should have been done years ago as previous Governments have failed due to Union pressure.

Another thing was the £2 billion wiped off the energy companies just because of Milibands speech!!!

People also need to realise that every private pension is linked to the Stock Market so its in everyones best interests for the City to do well. Miliband would have knew something was going to happen before he made such a speech and afterwards every Private pension holder in the Country lost out because of him. Yeah that really gives people confidence that he's the right man for the job

Doesn't quite work out like that Adam.

If you are putting into a private pension or more technically a money purchase pension scheme then you are basically buying shares. If the share price drops then your contribution buys more shares. When the share price goes up which it will do then your purse will benefit as you brought more shares when the price fell. It balances itself out.

You only really lose if the share price continually falls which it wont do or there is a big drop in the share price before you retire. For the later, those who are retiring soon then it is best to check your pension is tied to the guarantee market part of the shares.

this sale is being forced through fast to prevent proper scrutiny, to make sure the public don't realise what is being done until it's too late, and to make it harder to unite opposition to a policy which has no mandate and no popular support.

Bollocks the public money which has been going into Royal Mail over the years is well known. Its only the Unions who stopped Labour themselves from selling Royal Mail.

As Baker said it should have been done years ago!!!!

My wife worked fo Royal Mail for 3 years after she left banking in the heart of the Banking crisis and coming from a target driven private sector to what is really public sector she would say often that there are many people there who are on old contracts just sitting on their hands doing f**k all because they knew they have Union scurity. The none Union members would welcome striking days because hey wouldn't have lazy bastards just looking at them doing all the work who are consantly complaining about everything. Complete 1970s mentality and its the taxpayers who were paying for it all.

Competition is healthy, surely if the jobs aren't required then why should taxpayers pay for them..? With that kindof mindset then no wonder Public sector employmet ballooned under Labour

Very much like your sweeping generalisation that thousands of jobs are going to be lost :thumbright
