However, I am considering doing something like this soon, how much do I have to put in? How much can I expect back, if any and when?

Golden rule James. Don't expect.
It's a gamble buying shares and unless you have inside information you simple just don't know which way it is going to go.
The only advice I will give you is try and workout if the company knows what it is doing.

Cheers Ian. Thanks for the info. I will obviously do a lot more research into this before I put any cash in as I suspect anyone would. I was just curious. Im guessing the dividends return is quite small on a small investment like this so in reality its probably not worth my while at the moment and if I went into it I'd have to dedicate a lot more time into it buying and selling at the right times on the market to make gains that I wanted which of course would take time. Time I unfortunately don't have at the moment with work and uni.

I do agree with the lower valued companies as well. Ive brought shares in Falklands Oil and Gas which have been around the 30p mark for months but I now hear that there's possible new drilling in a well early 2014 so fingers crossed

Personally I feel the RM offer will be a safe bet.
Their line of attack is to sell off their profitable side such as the large cities. Expect the services to the remote parts to disappear. This will go against public opinion but RM are now being driven by profit not sentiment. They should have done this years ago.

People also need to realise that every private pension is linked to the Stock Market so its in everyones best interests for the City to do well. Miliband would have knew something was going to happen before he made such a speech and afterwards every Private pension holder in the Country lost out because of him. Yeah that really gives people confidence that he's the right man for the job

Doesn't quite work out like that Adam.
If you are putting into a private pension or more technically a money purchase pension scheme then you are basically buying shares. If the share price drops then your contribution buys more shares. When the share price goes up which it will do then your purse will benefit as you brought more shares when the price fell. It balances itself out.
You only really lose if the share price continually falls which it wont do or there is a big drop in the share price before you retire. For the later, those who are retiring soon then it is best to check your pension is tied to the guarantee market part of the shares.

Bollocks the public money which has been going into Royal Mail over the years is well known. Its only the Unions who stopped Labour themselves from selling Royal Mail.
As Baker said it should have been done years ago!!!!
