Cardiff's two-goal Fraizer Campbell ‘can play for England’

FRAIZER CAMPBELL has been backed for England honours after his second-half brace stunned Manchester City.
By: Phil Cadden Mon, August 26, 2013

Cardiff's goalscorers Fraizer Campbell and Aron Gunnarsson celebrate Cardiff's third goal
After falling behind to Edin Dzeko’s 51st-minute opener, Aron Gunnarsson and then Campbell fired newly-promoted Cardiff to a shock 3-2 win over the 2012 Premier League champions.

Alvaro Negredo bagged an injury-time consolation, but it was too little, too late for manager Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Now Cardiff boss Malky Mackay believes Campbell can add to his one cap against Holland in February 2012 by making a return to Roy Hodgson’s squad.

Mackay said: “I’ve got a player now in Fraizer who has had an England cap and can force his way back into that squad. There’s no reason why he can’t do it.

“He has to keep working hard, keep his head down and play like that against top players.

“Fraizer gave their backline a torrid time. I was delighted to get him from Sunderland for £600,000. It was an incredible bit of business.

“He hit the ground running when he came, but he needed to get fitter and sharper.

“He needed belief in his ability and we have given him that.”

Campbell capitalised on poor City marking by right-back Pablo Zabaleta at two second-half set-pieces from Peter Whittingham and Don Cowie to hand the Welsh side their first points of the season.

And the 25-year-old admitted the win at the Cardiff City Stadium was a nice bonus.

Campbell said: “The most special thing was getting the three points.

“When you are a promoted side, you don’t want to wait too long to get any points on the board, so today was a massive bonus for us.

“We knew we’d get our chances. There were some great deliveries into the box and it was a great all-round team performance.

“The manager has been saying to us we deserve to be in this league on merit.

“We did very well last season to get promoted from the Championship and we have to go out there and show everyone what we’re about.

City boss Pellegrini bemoaned his team’s defending

I’ve got a player now in Fraizer who has had an England cap and can force his way back into that squad. There’s no reason why he can’t do it

Malky Mackay
“We will be the underdogs for a lot of the games this season but, as we showed, we’ve got great determination and hopefully that will see us through.’’

Local hero Craig Bellamy hailed Cardiff’s support after beating his former side.

“We can hold the crowd responsible for the three points,” he said.

“They were incredible.”

City boss Pellegrini bemoaned his team’s defending.

“It does not matter who is guilty with the two corners, conceding from two corners is too much, it is too important an area,” he said.

“We had the patience to try to score, we did it, but it was a pity with the two corners".

2 goals and he thinks he can oust the likes of Sturridge. Cadden is a plum at times. Danny Graham got double figures and got nowhere near as he's not good enough to play at that level. Just like Campbell.

Danny Graham :laughing5: :laughing5: :laughing5: Rather Golden Grahams mate :laughing5: :laughing5: :laughing5:

Campbell and Sturridge would be a great partnership.

He won't get near the bench mate :laughing5: :laughing5: :laughing5: By that logic then, Luke Moore should have been touted for England as he scored against Man City as well!

You are forgetting of course that Frazier has already been deemed good enough by Hodgson to get an England cap.

No wonder then that they lurch from one crisis to another when they choose that calibre of player.

Love how all these Jacks are shitting themselves now. Our rise has been on the back of their minds for the last 2 seasons and now their nightmare is a reality.

We have already given England one international and that was in the championship. It wont be long till we give them two others in the form of Caulker and Campbell. This must be eating into the English loving Jacks.

I don't think any Jack is shitting themselves mate. We had 8 points from our 1st 8 games last season and just lost against 2 very very good teams. Nearly sneaked a point yesterday despite being poor. Season starts for us next week v WBA.

As for Internationals, think you are forgetting we have a few of with them at Swansea (Dutch - Vorm, JDG - Spanish - Hernandez, Ivory Coast - Bony, England - Shelvey, Ki - South Korea plus several Welsh Internationals. I do recall Mr Bothroyd getting a single cap only to never be recalled again. Vorm and JDG got call ups to the Dutch squad on the back of playing for us don't forget.

I'm not panicking at all as I know how this league can knock you off a big high the next week.

Wow one or two games. That's enough to make a judgement. What if he's a better player now? Or aren't players able to improve? I'm not saying he will get other caps, I'm not bothered, but you're just coming across as being small minded and bitter.

Re: Cardiff's two-goal Fraizer Campbell ‘can play for Englan

Mon Aug 26, 2013 10:30 am

Not bitter mate, I just can't see premiership defences worrying about him. You've set your stall up now so managers will know how to approach you at CCS. One thing I have learned from this league is how quickly players and managers learn tactically how to combat different styles. They are more intelligent than lower league managers and know how to 'do a job ' on teams.

Also beware the following refs - Taylor and Swarbrick - they hate welsh teams and both have big team mentalities. Taylor is the worst in this division by far as he keeps stopping play for the smallest things and frustrates players and fans, especially at home.

I thought Campbell had been injured for a lengthy spell in the past so just checked. Out of the 4 times you played Sunderland in the PL, Campbell played in one of the games an came on in the 84th min. So you've made your judgement on 8 or 9 minutes, assuming injury time :laughing6:

If bothroyd managed to get a call up to the england squad can't see why Campbell can't. Early days yet but there's always a chance. Don't think he'll go to the World Cup but he might get into a squad for a friendly :ayatollah:

He probably will, just like Shelvey. He won't get much game time the way Sturridge is playing though.
